Thought I'd post this for new players.
Note to use the AB you'll need Electronics 4 or use a Civ AB.
Prices vary at locations but these are Jita prices.
Ship - Cormorant Destroyer - 1,000,000.00 ISK
Hi Slots 5x EP-S Gaussian Miner I - 250,000.00 ISK
Med Slots 1x 1MN AB I - 10,000.00 ISK
Low Slots 1x CPU Co-Processor - 20,000 ISK
Total cost - 1,280,000.00 ISK (Give or take)
Total ore per pull - 48.3 x 5 = 241.5
The total pull is almost that of a Mining barge with a Strip miner, except alot cheaper and also much faster. Granted you can't mine the more expensive minerals as fast as a strip miner, but for the price I don't think it can be beat.
I tried using other destroyers but the Cormorant is the only one with a base of about 250 CPU, which is what you need.

For us new players, could you define "per pull" please? Thanks for posting that!

Couldn't you get a catalyst or thrasher, fill the lows with co -processors and use more miners? or is it too big a gap? And the amount per pull is the amount per cycle of the miners that is gotten from the 'roids you're mining. ---- I like pie.

Newbie Mining Guide:
1.) Make a new caldari character. 2.) Select Military School -> Operations -> Command -> Captain's Training (starts you with frigate IV) 3.) Train Spaceship Command III 4.) Train Caldari Cruiser I 5.) Buy an Osprey and start mining
Takes less then 24 hours. Once that's done.
6.) Train Mining I, II, III and IV, buy miner II's. 7.) Train Caldari Cruiser II and III 8.) train Astrogeology and Mining Drones
A good osprey mines 3 or 4 times more then a makeshift cormorant. A newbie osprey will mine 50-100% more.

Sure, the Osprey (or Scythe if you prefer that) have a higher yield, but if you're a solo-miner and afraid of jet-can mining, those 2 arent' the best choice. In that case an Augoror is way better, since you can fit a lot of mining-lasers and push it's cargohold above 1k.
It all depends on personal preference of gameplay and of course isk :) Starting to mine in a Dessy isn't such a bad idea until you feel comfortable for some bigger ship.

Mining into a jetcan is easy and the chance of ore theft is pretty low if you find a unpopulated system. I'm assuming that since we're talking about newbie miners, they're going to stick to higher sec space where rat spawns are weaker or non existent. Worse case senario, hauling out some giant secure cans is a lot better then mining into just your cargo hold.

And a Celestis, Vexor, or Guardian-Vexor will mine better than an osprey with a little cargo expansion. The Guardian Vexor is definetly the best with room for 3 miner II's (4 if u wanna push the tf) a launcher dor defense(same as osprey) 480 cargo capacity(almost same), but a much higher drone capacity of 75.

So just make a new Gallente character choosing whichever one has the highest perception and choose accordingly and you can start out with 11 perception and 10 memory.

back in my first couple weeks playing I did mine with my cormorant...or one of them
3 miner 1s 3 125mm rail 1s
and whatever else you can fit on it.... bring some ammo and you can sit there all day and mine in a 0.6 or higher with crappy skills and be able to defend yourself, dump all the loot into a can and come back later with an industrial
it didn't bring home too much bacon but about 600k in a couple hours or so in Isanamo mining solid pyrox it was decent for a new player

You totally forgot the "+20% yield per level" on the Osprey.
With Caldari Cruiser 2, the Osprey's 3 lasers mine as much as 4.2 lasers on a ship without that bonus ... or, in other words, "0.2 lasers" more than the Vexor ...
With really good drone skills, the Vexor can be a really nice mining ship, but better than the Osprey ? With Caldari Cruiser 4 (req to learn the BS skill), an Osprey mines as much as 5.4 lasers, that's even more than a Thorax ...
But this thread was about "newbie mining", and really good drone skills are not what a newbie can do ...
By the way, a Guardian-Vexor is a rare event ship, worth maybe 800 millions IF you can find someone willing to part with his prized collector ship ... I highly doubt that a newbie could afford one ...

Best way of using the comorant for mining is to put a small shield booster and 7 125mm rails on it, go kill l1 missions untill you can afford an ospray, and then proceed as stated above, shouden't take more then one or two days, and you could probobly have a go at a few l2's to
if you haven't grown bored with mining yet that is :p

It doesn't. An Osprey with Miner IIs will beat a dessie hands down for mining ore. And I'm not even sure a Corm would beat out a bantam with miner IIs as well.

I use 5x Xecl mining lasers and i pull 900 units of pyrox a minute. I make roughly 700k per load on my badger II and I can fill it in about 30 minutes. I am sure this isn't the most effective way, but its very good for me.

i used to mine with four laser twos on my vexor .. add cpus if i rem right .. and drones .... when we could fly ten drones ... i was pulling six laaser twos worth of jaspet on a vex .. straight into a can ... but the vexor drone space was loike .. 150 back in those days .. 1 - still today you can use .. 3 harvs aand two miner ones .. kleaving you three med tech twos and one small tech two drone for defence ..! so there you have it .. the vex is and always will be the BEST mining cruiser in the game ..!

I recomend getting a Bantam or equivalent mining frigate as soon as possible. It is dirt cheap (<20% of the cost of an osprey) but will increase your income greatly (two turret slots as opposed to three on the osprey). The good thing is that you get an automatic 80% bonus to the mining with Caldari frigate lvl 4. With a bantam you should be able to mine enough for an osprey within a few hours or so.
If someone doesn't ship your minerals for you, you will need to run back every pull or two. This is a tremendous waste of time. So, buy an indistrial before you buy the osprey. Then you will be able to mine enough to buy an osprey in 20-30 minutes.
With this setup you should be able to mine enough to afford a new osprey within a few hours.

While training for an ospray (which takes me a few days) I figured I'd try a destroyer to see if it was better than my Bantam.
Well, it is. Slightly...
Bantam: 2 miner II's and the right skills (frig 3, mining 5, electronics 4. Basicly what I got from char creation, except for frig 3), I get 120 m3 per laser. 120 x 2 = 240 m3. Not too bad for a bantam.
Now, while trining for frig 4 (Which is takes me about 3 days) I quickly trained for a destroyer (Only 30 minutes) to see if I could get more.
Fitted it with 5 Dual Diode Mining Laser I's taking up 270 CPU. With a Co Processor 1 in the low slot, I have 276.06 cpu in total. Just enough to use them all!
With my skills, each laser mines 55 m3. 55 x 5 = 275m3 per pull. Not too bad. I could actually get slightly more though by replacing 2 Dual Diodes with Cu Vapor Particle Bore Stream I's, and maybe another one if I fit a named co-processor, but the cost doesn't really justify it imo.
So to sum it up: With the right skills, you can get 275 per pull.
Hi Slots: 5x Dual Diode Mining Laser I
Med Slot: -
Low Slots: 1x CPU Co-Processor

I don't believe it, this thread was necro'ed four times ... and people are still abusing the Cormorant while dedicated mining ships (that do a better job at mining) exist ...
Every race has a mining frigate that can do "almost" the same m¦/hour than the Cormorant, and for a fraction of the price ... you can get a Bantam for roughly 40K ISKs, and with "okay-ish" skills (frig 4, mining 4) it's TWO lasers will mine as much as the FIVE lasers you can fit on a Cormorant ... you'll even have enough grid and cpu left to fit a "basic" tank (small shield booster) and an AB, PLUS a sweet -60% reduction on the cap use of the mining lasers ...

for all your mining needs
navatas Racial frigate V = 4 mining lasers + 1 mining drone bantam Racial frigate V = 4 mining lasers + 1 mining drone burst Racial frigate V = 4 mining lasers tormentor Racial frigate V = 4 mining lasers + 1 mining drone
or
vexor racial cruiser V 4 mining lasers + 5 mining drones (with cruiser V) 7.5 mining drones equivilant exquror 4 mining lasers and a huge hold + 5 mining drones osprey Racial cruiser V = 6 mining lasers equivilant and 4 mining drone scythe racial cruiser V = 6 mining lasers equivilant and 1 mining drones augoror 3 mining lasers and a fairly big hold + 1 mining drone arbitrator racial cruiser V = 2 mining lasers + 7.5 mining drones equivilant
evaluation Burst is the worst mining frigate caldari have the best mining cruiser in the game amarr might as well just use a tormentor for there mining gallente have a nice choice but compared to minmatar and caldari cruisers is not quite so good. minmatar have the second best mining cruiser.
this is based on the player having Racial frigates V, racial cruisers V, Drones V and i guess if you wanted to you could add mining drone and mining lasers skills to thses calculations.
but if your a Newb. then that mining cormorant destroyer of roids is a pretty fine setup. it outmines a mining frigate by 1 mining laser. but it cant use a drone (but oh well)

Yeah, but Cormorant has so massive cargo hold. :)
450m¦ is "massive" ??
Then the hold of my mining BS is humongous, at 1007m¦ ... and let's forget the Mining Barges, the smallest only has 1000m¦ of cargohold (Procurer) ...
Do you know that a Bantam with 2 Expanded Cargohold I and Caldari Frigate 4 has a cargo hold of 390m¦ ?? And you can raise that with named modules too ...
Still, the thing that shocks me the most is the multiple ressurections of this thread ... this undead beast is tenacious !
