In my opinion EVE isn't just a waste of time. For me it is, like others said before, a great form of entertainment. I think one of the most important things in life is to make new experiences, of any kind. And actually the world of EVE is great place to experience nice things and my memories of some moments i had in the game are likewise as real as the ones i got outside of the game. I have to agree that it's very important to keep a balance between a game world, and the 'real' one, but in fact you should do that everytime, no matter what kind of hobby you have. And keep in mind that you are interacting with real people here, with real feelings and behaviors. Why should that seperate you from your outer world? It's just something you do with your friends. Just like going to the cinema. And it's in any way, not less good or valuable as any other activities, although the society is keep trying to tell us that.
Many of the people i know go through the clubs and discos at the weekends, dance to stupid mainstream-music, that i usually don't like, and then get home drunk. Does that sound like reasonable way to use your time? For me it's not, but nevertheless, it is in some way more accepted by the society than the nerd-like slobbing around in front of a screen. But there is really no reason of feeling guilty. I'm playing games and especially MMOs for a couple of years now, and i really know the people i play with and even found some new friends through gaming. We talk through teamspeak while we play, and several times a year we come all together to 'real-life'-party and I really can't say that i'm socially 'seperated' from the outer world. Sure, if you want to get ahead, then EVE isn't the right activity for you, but so wouldn't many other conventional hobbies. But if you just want to make experiences, get entertained, have some fun and are tired of watching TV all the day, then EVE is very productive to me and definitely not a waste of time. And as long as you can keep a balance in your life, between entertainment and your responsibilities, what should be wrong with it?
