Hi all,
today, while doing some trading I was shot down in 0.4 space. That alone is no problem as it is to be expected flying through there with an almost naked Badger II ;)
However, what I'm curious about is why I flew through there. My Autopilot is set to safe mode, so I should avoid 0.4-- systems. But appareantly, there can be a situation where he can't fly another route and HAS to go through low sec. How do I notice that? There was no message or information that I will fly there, despite of the setting.
Just curious if I miss something...

there are cases when getting from A-B you HAVE to go through low sec.
you can set how strict your autopilot is in the map screen how ever even if you set it to be very very strict it may send you through low sec because there is no other way.
Oddly if you jump manually you get a message the first time you jump to lowsec but if your on autopilot then it just skips it, I'd been playing for about a month before I got my low sec warning (and I had been to 0.1 and back).
(yes it should have a warning at least the first time)

Just found out that when I look at the map, it shows me the whole route with the secs. I guess it's worth checking before I lift off ;)
Well, no hard loss, as I was flying empty to pick up some goods ;-) And I was pleasantly surprised, that I didn't got poded. Seems I hit a friendly pirate...

Yep, unless you know the route it is always advisable to check the map for any "surprises".

Nice info. Is there anyway to get an afterburner or MWD to light up as you come out of warp and transit to the next star gate while in auto pilot?
Sure would make the autopilot much more efficient.

Another useful thing is in the upper left corner of the screen - below the current star system information you will see info on your next jump, and along the left edge of that area are a series of colored dots, one for each jump remaining in the trip. Keep an eye out for any orange or red dots and you'll know well before you arrive in a trouble zone.
I'm not here to win any popularity contests. I couldn't care less what you think of me - all that matters is this: Can you defend your opinions? |

I noticed that, but since I have a small red/green color blindness (not total, but it's hard to diminish between shades of green or red sometimes) that is not tooo much help to me ;) I'd rather have the sec numbers there like it is in the map to be honest...

If you set stars to show security rating, then when you set your destination and look at your route on the left-hand side of the screen, you should see waypoints with orange/red coloring...those are the 0.4 and below systems.

Since you are cloaked when you first come through a gate, until you start moving again - rule one is just don't use your autopilot when going through low security zones. (OK rule one would have been to not be there, but you were, so rule two then.) That moment of being cloaked is the time for you to look around and see who's there and how much trouble you're in, and your last chance to maybe get away.
If you're on autopilot, you don't get the chance...

I find that it's a good habit do make separate waypoints for each low-sec system any route takes me through. I'll often be semi-afk during long routes and such, looking at the forums or reading. Having a waypoint in the low-sec systems stops the ship in the cloaked state and give the audible notification that a Waypoint has been reached.
So if I've been spacing out I can get back to the EVE screen long before the cloak expires, check to see how things are, and proceed through the low-sec system with all due caution. If I have instas for the route, great, I'll hit it and re-enable the AP during warp to ensure that my ship warps out when it hits the next gate.

Nanofibers are probably your best bet for slightly speeding up afk trips. You'll align much faster, and move 20 m/s faster top speed (per fiber, IIRC).

Well.... just don't go AFK autopilot trading, ever. I can see this thread will probably run pages upon pages of people giving handy and effective advice on how to navigate from one system to another with as little human intervention as possible, but it's a VERY bad habit to acquire. Especially if you plan to make REAL money by focusing on trading.
There are modules, skills and tactics that will help you survive... but NONE of those will help you if you go AFK. Even if you somehow find a way to make a living doing AFK High-Sec Trading, you'll find there's a new trend with cargo-scanner/kamikaze-battleship pairs that will gladly throw a battleship away in high-sec if a cargo-scan shows you carrying lucrative cargo.
You're not safe anywhere, true, but the very best trade routes begin, end, and travel through low sec space. You need to build a habit of scouting out trade routes with a balanced cargo payoff in BOTH directions, then jumpcloning to save your implants then hopping onto a shuttle to plot intas in both directions of that traderoute.
You'll prolly hear a lot of the vets here give similar advice, and if you're like me you will NOT listen. And if you don't, you'll learn it the hard way just like I did, when I lost a 24-million ISK cargo whilst afk... the pirate who destroyed my ship was asking for 500,000 in ransom, but i was AFK and didn't respond in time. He then promptly rid me of 60 million in implants too.
Besides, with the right instas in place, a 12-jump route is actually faster BOTH WAYS than a 4-jump route ONE WAY with no instas even with an MWD... yes, I actually timed it.

also, once you've set your destination, if you look in the top left, you'll see a small column of colors dots. Each dot is a system, and the color corrisponds to the security of the zone. this is very handy when you dont' take the time to use the map. - - - - Q: Can I change skills without logging in or Que skills? A: no. to both. End of story.
Q: Wheres the Search button on the forums? A: There isn't one. go here. www.eve-search.com |

The autopilot is not necessarily an "automatic flight planner". Just as there is no "I win" button in PVP, there is no "autopilot" that makes it so that you don't have to think about how you move around. Most low secs ARE avoidable. Going between Essence and Lonetrek, you can easily bypass Kubinen and nearby lowsecs if you just put some 20 second effort into setting a first waypoint somewhere else before heading for the final destination. This will add 5-8 jumps for the reward of safe high sec routes.
