Its armour tank is superlative even with two Gyros I'll admit that I haven't played with it since the BC updates so the meta around its fitting may have changed, butGǪ GǪfor the same reason as always: because you can. Gyros, TEs and a suitcase in the lows, propulsion, point and shield in the mids, which saves you both speed an a bunch of PG that you could use for more fun things. Shield Canes were the go-to roaming BC for a long, long time. Even though its use in that role has been pretty well trounced by the Talos (Heelooo, Null kiting), I still think "Shield BC" when I hear "Cane."
More Damage, More Speed, Longer Range, why would you ever plate the pre-nerf Cane? Since the nerf, I'm not sure I've even flown one, so I don't know the new meta.

Why would you shield in three slots what you can armour in 4? And not have any tackle at all?
Remember, I'm talking about the Pre-Tiericide Cane. A shield cane could do a full rack of 425s and a pair of medium neuts and get perfectly respectable EHP out of 2 slots and rigs. An armor cane usually ended up with 220s and still wouldn't get both medium neuts. In addition, with a plate and rigs it was glacial in comparison, especially if the shield cane tossed on a nano or two (which was a perfectly reasonable swap from a TE).
Tiericide hurt the Shield cane a lot more than it hurt the armor cane. So, like I said, current conditions are likely very different from the the previous conditions we're talking about.
