I am trying so hard to mine.. and mine more, that it feels like this is what the game is all about! I have to have money, and I dont want to be a ore thief, or a pirate, so what are my choices?
Sure Ihave been hunting alittle, killing pirates, getting cargos.. but that isnt paying the bills!
How else can I make some money?

Edited by: Veruna Caseti on 03/09/2003 13:45:05 Plain and simple, mining is where the big money is. If you want to make money fast then mining is the way to go.
There are plenty of other ways to make money - NPC hunting, agent missions, trading with NPCs or other players, production, etc., etc.
However, hands down when you're new to the game mining will make you the most money the quickest. That's just the way it is.
Have you tried making mining more interesting? How about getting together with some friends and trying to mine in lower security space where you have to fend off some NPCs? Or get a large group together with some haulers and REALLY pull in some huge loads of ore - that can be fun just because the profit can get so huge if done correctly.

Agreed, imo, mining is the best way to make money when you are starting out.
Dont worry though, when you get say maybe 5 million and a nice ship you can start to do other things. Npc killing is more fun, and if done rite, can make u some ok money.
Im by no means rich, but i have cruisers and manufacture a few items, these help me tick over, and mean that i dont really need to mine at all.
Remember, if you kill npcs you can recycle the crappy items and get minerals from them also.
If you are unsure about anything, just ask, the eve community are very helpfull.

Edited by: Winterblink on 03/09/2003 14:00:03 Yes, recyling crap loot is a great way to get a marginal amount of ore. Depending on what level of sector you're hanging in or able to handle, some of that loot will recycle into some pretty valuable minerals (albeit in tiny amounts). NPC killing IS quite a lot of fun though, I've got some interesting equipment and cash from that. Nowhere near the level of mining, but it's a nice break from it.
Oh and just to add, I find that mining with friends is an ENTIRELY differente experience than loner mining. Get a few people together and get one person to handle an indy ship. He ferries mined ore back to the station while the others mine away. You pay more attention to the mining that way, I find, and it's a lot more fun. Plus you can split the take on the sale of the minerals and on average you'll make out better than the time spent doing it all alone.

This is also a great way for newbie miners to enter the "big time" prematurely. It doesn't take long to get into a decent industrial hauler - then find some folks mining in Cruisers or Battleships and who are willing to share the haul with you if you run the minerals from the mining site.
I started doing this with a select group of generous folks, and on average I make 6 to 10 times more in a day than I could mining alone in my Probe frigate.

try NPC convoy raiding.
u can make a LOT of money real quick - only draw back is it makes a mess of your standing with the faction that controls the space u raid in.
however - if u never venture in Minmatar/Gallente/Caldari/Amarr (delete as applicable) space except for convoy raids then why worry... _______________________

Perhaps the best startup we could come up with during beta (between the wipes we had some time to plan it out) was intensive mining with a group of 5-7 people. Have one of the folks start a career in the military school with the right options to get Frigate III and Ship Command III from the start. Then mine your arses off and give that guy all the cash so he can buy an indy and the skill, then "drone" for the indy and watch the money roll in. A solo startup is obviously much slower and devoid of tactical options....
Other ways to make money. I myself made a ton of dough after the last wipe by simply flying around in a Navitas picking up loot others left behind in 0.8+ space. Once in a while I'd venture deep into 0.2 and try to find some guy in a cruiser trashing pirates and clear out after him. Each haul would be worth easily between 250k to one million. I'm sure that's doable today...

Thank you all for the info.
I do mine with the corp, but usually all that money goes to the corp. But i did get a Throax from them just the other night. But I need some extra cash, so i dont know anyone else to mine with to get it, and so.. this is why i find it so boring.
I never have hit a convoy! Sounds like fun!
Yes I like to loot and then sell the items or recycle... but its still not fun to hunt alone.

Because I want to make friends,, not enemies. And I know how mad it makes ppl when they get stolen from.

NPC hunting is no more fun than mining asteroids after you're on your 1000th gurista despoiler or 200th gurista terrorist/ascriber. You've seen all the loot and you know that useful loot drops very very rarely... ----------------------------- You think Marco Polo said "Damn Mongolians were camping that cave entry into the next valley the entire day, you can't get friggin anywhere in the world with those damn griefer tribes all over the place" ? -Indigo Seqi

The simple reason to not be an ore thief is that you'll be killed on sight if you ever leave 1.0 space. As you will find out if you ever leave Emrayur.

Ange,
make a deal with your corp along the lines that you.
a) get a small cut from profit, so that you won't be dependable by them. b) Start mining some ore for 1 hour, ask a corp member to pick it up for you and then refine it and sell it. After that you can do your magic for your corp. c) make money and get an indie, then start looking for trade offers, they can make alot of money as well. A corp member of mine made 10 mil last night by just doing some trade runs (drawback... pirates!!)
But all in all have fun... that is what this game is about you need to have fun ---

Stupid question, but what's the enforcement response for actions like that? :) I've never really tried to take on a convoy since beta.

Yes, Indeed! Mining is and always will be the best way to make money, FAST!
What a pity it's so god awfully boring. Looking at a rock, shooting beams at it. The occasional pirate groups popping up but those can be fended off with a single turret or drones. And I'm not talking about 6k or less pirates. Pirates that actually have for example.... MISSILES! And warp jamming! (ooh!) Been there, seen that, blasted 'em.
Seriously, It wouldn't hurt to make npc bounties higher..... we're talking about blowing up a ship that's worht like..... a couple of million..... and getting chicken feed for it and a couple of modules. Sheesh........

I have to agree with the folks who say mining can get boring. Solo mining using a cruiser/indy combo is the most profitable.
I will sometimes read a book between ore drags or hook up my laptop and watch a DVD (sort of an "in-flight" movie).
Your level of enjoyment can also depend on the level of creativity/risk you're willing to take.
Due to the shortage of Mega, I took some survey trips into 0.0 to try and find Bistot. Mostly just sight seeing, but got to tangle with some decent rats with decent bounties.
I imagine mining, looking over your shoulder for a Sansha Ravager or player pirates would be more fun.

Edited by: Erty on 03/09/2003 15:02:58 NPC bounties are perfect. I make more money hunting NPC's than mining. Average with a good spawn in my Moa is around 1 million isk per hour, but with 5x40k and stuff like that I can make much more :)¿ And that's just the bounties - if you loot you'll make even more :)
Before I started to mine like an idiot for my Scorpion I didn't mine for over a month =) And I always had money anyway.
Btw if you think mining is boring, just run the game windowed and watch a movie/browse the forums/whatever while you mine :)

well, i dont see a need for pirate bounties to be increased, as it is atm i can make 4-5mil in 1 hour (not counting refined loot and valuables)
as long as mining is the most boring thing in the game, it should be what pays best off imo _______

Just kill people, it makes the game 10 times more interesting, not to mention you do you part by helping to keep this damned economy going :) And you still make friends, just a whole lot more enemies, keeps you on your toes though.

I have to agree with the minig issue.
Sure it is the best way to get money, but that is the problem.
If you want to use the excuse that.."Hey you can do missions and hunt, so dont *****."Then you need to make these equaly profitable.
Mining is the most profitable by a longshot...enought to make the time you spend on EVE doing mining missions.
I think the missions are fun, but frankly, they are not worth my time in the payout, all the jumping and such, so I end up mining to make some money, but it is not fun at all.
If you want people to feel thay they have a variety of things to do, then the other things need to pay out a little more.

I agree. I looked into doing the missions and seen some sort of colaterol which I dont have,, and then the pay sucks. Waste of time.

I love mining in Eve universe.
I know many people who love mining, but, they don't come to the forums, they are busy in joy in Eve universe.
The only reason I come to the forums right now is because my main connection to the camera-drone is not available right now, so all I can do is visit the forums, eat, sleep, talk to friends.
I long for when I can be back out in my ship.

I feel for the person that hates mining, But the best thing to do is set a goal for yourself.
My goals have kept the game interesting, I even broke it down to a point (before I got my megathron) Where I figured how much ore per minute I could mine, and how many hours I would need to mine to get a certain ship. So even if you get bored you've set a goal... "I need to mine for x amoiunt of hours to get enough Pyro to build this ship"
You'll find that You actually start getting excited about meeting those goals, at least I did.
I'd also suggest finding two other people to work with, it makes the time much better being able to shoot the preverbial **** if you know what I mean. Three people also seems to be a magic number for a profit:split ratio. anything more unless your doing a 7 person crew... you loose too much $$$....
(three people = 1 hauler 2 miners, seven people = 5 miners, 2 haulers)
If your corp doesnt supply you with everything you need upon asking, Then fine, you can still mine for that corp But I'd suggest 1) find a generous corp to join who doesnt ask you to give all your minerals to them 2) if your too attached to the guys in your corp... either mine half for the corp half for your group of 3, Or 1/3rd for the corp 2/3rd for you etc.
You'll find mining becomes exciting too when you get a cruiser that has 4 or 5 lasers.... and a large drone bay. Because most of the time ... you barely have enough time to literally SPRINT downstairs to get something to drink! =) That gets annoying after a while... but it keeps it interesting =)
And then you get a battleship... and its LOADS of fun to mount 7 or so lasers... launch 8 or 9 harvesters... and DECEMATE a belt in a few hours leaving it to pebbles =).
Sorry for the long message but Mining is a lot of fun you just have to look at it in the right way.
