My current computer is a bit fried (see this picture: http://images.caf.ssxh.net/eve_broken.jpg) and since it's so out-of-date, I'll be getting a new one. I'll be attending a boarding school next year, so I'd like to get a gaming-compatible laptop. I've found one that fits my price limit and offers the performance I seek, however I'm a little uncertain about EVE.
I know that the EVE rendering system uses quite a bit more CPU than other games do, resulting in much higher-quality output and a higher framerate--but this is done by virtue of raw number-crunching power. Mobile processors generally have a much lower clock speed than desktop processors, but I've heard that they have technologies that allow them to deliver the same performance. Will these technologies come into play when playing EVE?
The system I wish to purchase will probably feature the following specifications: * Intel« Celeron« M 370 1.5GHz 1MB L2 Cache 400MHZ FSB * 1GB Dual Channel DDR2 SO-DIMM at 533MHz - 2 x 512MB * 128MB NVidia« GeForceÖ Go MXM 6600 [OR] 256MB NVidia« GeForceÖ Go MXM 6600 * Intel« GMA 900 Extreme Graphics
You'll notice that I put two video card entries in that list. The system (Alienware Area-51 m5500) has a switch that flips between the two graphics chips. While gaming, I'll be using the GeForce.
So, will this work?

If it doesn't............you forgot the battery AND the power cord.
<-----runs EVE part of the time on an intel centrino mobility with 32meg radeon 9200 and 512meg ram. (compaq laptop). and it runs just fine.
the mobility processors have better performance and run cooler. It is another reason intel is moving the 'mobility/centrino' tech to the desktop processors in the next generation of their products.

What screen resolution/colordepth are you running?

Edited by: Sevarus James on 25/02/2006 05:59:28 My x1000 is running hicolor at 1280x800. Frame rate in EVE for me under normal load is about 23-27fps. (omega drivers).
Keep in mind that the video you indicated you are planning to get is going to be MUCH MUCH better than what I've got.
EVE is and always been more CPU-bound thant GPU-bound due to the engine that they are using, so with your 1.5 ghz processor combined with the 128meg geforce card, you should say much MUCH better FPS than I'm getting..........and I'm not complaining.

Okay, thanks for the help. It'll be pretty expensive, but quite worth it.. :)

I would recomend against getting a celeron...they are notoriously bad processors.

Scrap the Celeron. Go for a Pentium M or 4 or get an AMD Turion. The 1 GB of ram will be fine as well as the Nvidia chip. That should do the trick. IO hope it is a widescreen laptop. I use a widescreen Toshiba and Eve looks awesome. I have an P4 3.2 and an ATI Mobile Radeon 9000. It works great with Eve.

To echo the comments of the last two, skip something with a Celeron. Also, you probably don't need to pony up quite that much cash to play Eve. I recently got one of these with the hardware somewhat tricked out, the main thing I did was to spend the extra $650.00 for the top CPU upgrade. Gets anywhere from 30 to 60 fps, depending on how much stuff is on screen.

Recently bought an Acer Aspire WLMi 5024, good hardware for low price and it runs Eve very nice. In retrospect tho I would get one with NVidia graphics. -
