I am kind of late to this party but I'll throw in my 2 isk.
For me, once you've taken a few big hits to the wallet you realize that you can get your money back fairly quick. I've been to zero a few times and eventually found recovering is not that hard overall. I will say that I pay the short term bills by doing L4 missions, and you can make several million isk on each one (plus the salvage, which is much easier to deal with with the new tractor units).
As for how do I feel after a big loss? My first truly 'big' loss was after mining constantly to buy a Machariel. I already had good support skills and T2 large guns. I was in for over a billion isk on the ship. I had a fit I had been planning for a week. I got home from work that night, the last of my ore had sold, the Galente BS skill had a point in it now and I threw my fit together and raced off to a faction mission (I didn't care about standing) to unleash hell!
Five minute later I was in a pod and out a billion isk, scrammed and melted by rats. W? T? F?
I pulled up EFT and checked the numbers on my fit. I looked at the loss mail to make sure I had everything I had planned. Guns? check. - T2 800mm ACs Shield hardeners? Check. Two, both set for the right damage types. Afterburner? Check. I was moving fast, I should have been OK. Shield booster? Check. C5, just like I had planned.
I was ready to punch F12 and complain to the GMs that something must be broken. A billion isk from mostly mining was gone! I started to write up a petition ticket and transcribed my fit in to it when reality hit me.
C5
I never noticed that the C5 shield booster had different sizes. I had only fit a medium one. Sure enough, looking in my hangar I see the one I was going to actually use on the ship. I must had had a C5 medium from looting an earlier mission somewhere.
I had nobody to blame but myself. I logged off for the night and stewed for a little bit, but it was my fault, nobody elses.
The next day went back to work on earning isk and bought a second Machariel that I would also eventually lose. I have since lost four of them to missions (I take the blame for three of them, the fourth I blame on the client, but the logs showed nothing of course). I was forced to abandon an Orca in a WH once too and got robbed of almost every isk and ship I owned.
But, from 0 isk you can recover fairly quickly. I've done it in Low-sec just because I wanted the challenge. I now have a few small fleets of ships in different areas in case I should ever need to rebuild again, I built a foundation against a future flood.
This is just a game. Isk is not the most important thing in the game either. If that is your mindset then this is no longer a game but instead it is a job, and you are paying for it.
