I've read through the FAQs and such but would like to clarify one point: can I do missions with, say, Internal Security agents for a particular corp to raise my standing with that corp to a high enough point so that I can start working with a R&D agent?
In other words, bump my standing up by using the Level 1-3 Internal Security missions and then starting R&D at level 4 once I have high enough standing.
I've never really run missions before so don't know much about them. I'm interested in R&D. Also, what sort of missions can I expect from R&D agents?

I think thats the only way how to get them. I am looking atm for some R&D agents as well and I dont have standing so I will be bothered with some stupid administration or what :/

That is what I did. Used the Internal Security agents (all kill missions I think) for Duvolle (Gallente) and raised my standing enough to start off with the highest R&D agent they had.
At lvl 1 gallente starship engineering I was getting 99 RP/day. At lvl 2 I am getting 142 RP/day....gonna train it up to 4 soon :) I've never done any actual R&D missions. I just talked to the agent and told him what I was interested in researching and bingo...RP's (research points) started accumulating. I heard the R&D missions were all either courier or market stuff (buy XXX and deliver to XXX). An R&D mission will double your the regular RP's that you get for one day. (eg) instead of 142 RP's for a particular day, you'd get 284 RP's that day. Basically a big waste of time to bother doing the R&D missions. Just get it started...sit back...cross your fingers...and go about your business as usual

Doing internal security missions for R&D corp is easisest (fastest) way to get enough standings for level 4 R&D agents at my opinion. There is however another way - it is possible to get your standings up with non combat (hauling) missions too tho it is slow and painful in my opinion (depends on personal preferences).
Doing internal security missions it is possible to get required standings (up to 6.9 for best level 4 R&D agens) in two weeks assuming you can start from level 2 agents and that you can play approx 20 hours per week. (I was using very tanked Raven with assault for level 2 and heavy launcers for level 3 internal security missions)

boost your standing... do COSMOS missions 
For Caldari there are a lot Lai Dai Corporation Cosmos agent around starting from lvl1 - lvl4.
if you completed all lvl1 you should have enough standing to get Lai Dai Corporation R&D lvl2 to work. if you completed cosmos lvl2 as well you should access to lvl3 R&D. if you want start at lvl4... finish the lvl3 cosmos too and you are fine.

Thanks very much for the replies.  Kill missions it is!
I'll look into Cosmos missions also. Not terribly sure what they are just yet.
