I realize this probably aint even on ccp's to-fix list o things, but nevertheless, some might feel it's an issue about intuition and design. Theres probably a backstory somewhere detailing their way of operation, but tbh, I cba digging it out from under.
Like stations, you can apporach and dock/jump at them from any angle, which is a way to simplify and shorten the process of jumping/docking as it would get to repetitive and timeconsuming if they were more elaborate in their design.
But, both stations and gates hint through design at that you'd have to be aproaching them from a specific direction to make a successful docking/jump, which in my world equals a design flaw as it to brightly points out the rather crude gametweak of a simplified jump/docking sequence.
So, instead of making an elaborate, repetivie and time consuming jump/dock sequence, re-design the gates/stations in such a way that it makes more sense to execute a jump or docking maneouvre from most directions.

You weren't in the beta, were you?
Cause in the beta, you needed to manually dock. There wasn't autopilot. People are already angry about flight time, do you really want to lengthen this more? ____________________________________ Free ISP users, read this if you have connections problems [b]I'm on Eris side! |

Did you also go through stargates the same way?
I know that when I saw my first stargate, I thought I was supposed to just fly right into it to make it work...I didn't know I had to right click on it to activate the damned thing. -------------------------------------[04:04:04] Tom Thumb > for a nut case you rawk

No offence, but that took me three reads to understand (but I did, in the end). I guess a lot of the "did you even read my post?" postings in these forums could have been avoided with more careful writing, maybe.
Still, it's quite fascinating (do we have a Spock smiley yet?) that so many different language people manage to understand each other at all. Of course, the worst mistyping usually originates from the US or UK .
Back on topic: Actually, I like the Amarrian jump gates. When I'm slightly inebriated you may well hear me yelling "GOAAAALLL!" when I hit one fom the right angle.

i think its just for gameplay TBH, would be a real chore to have to click our way around to the right end of a stargate. now if EVE used Joystick control then it would be cool to just fly into them and appear in the next system.

I don't know, I think I'd find zooming into the docking bay in my Executioner at 3500+ m/s rather amusing... -------------------------------------[04:04:04] Tom Thumb > for a nut case you rawk

This wouldn't be so problematic if the collision detection wasn't so god-awful.

Edited by: Haks''he Lirky on 27/02/2006 15:41:32 Edited by: Haks''he Lirky on 27/02/2006 15:40:45 Well as much as I love this game and how it looks, the collision detection is awfull and the method of controling your ship is not designed for precise guiding.
This I think bugs the developers more than it does us the players, but I think that while this is "working" it will remain as it is and how the stations look is a simpler issue than the actual game physics so they have more control over it.
So they want the stations to look like they do, or they wouldnt look like it, they have 100% control over how the stations look.
As someone mentioned, in the beta they tried to get us to allign with the docking entrance to stations before we docked, this didnt work within the current 3D physics engine so they simplified it to get the game out of Beta.
So this would suggest that they didnt have 100% control over the process of docking undocking, at least not in the way they wanted.
It's just one of those things you must in the end accept as it is, simply because it's working and does not provide any gameplay problems as such (realism isnt a problem).

Edited by: Smagd on 27/02/2006 15:48:31 Hmm,
the OP was suggesting to change the way jumpgates *look* to better reflect that you *don't* have to come from a specific direction in case that's still not clear, so dunno, maybe make them look like a globe. (Dunno.)

Ooh yes, Elite all over: The best way to dock at just the right angle was to HIT THE AFTERBURNER just as it was approaching. And see if you can survive the scraping if your aim was wide

I think another side effect of making docking/jumping more realistic would be that it would make stations a whole lot easier to blockade and gates a whole lot easier to camp.
If you had to come at a gate from a specific angle to jump then it would be way to easy for a small force to block it with interdiction spheres.
Same would also apply to station docking. It's bad enough how easy it is to block undocking since everybody appears at the same place.
Some day my portrait will show up :P |

as long as it doesn`t takes more time then now and no queue is used otherwise, docking/undocking from jita 4-4 would take 5 hours ________________ I don't DO graphics, here's a sig anyway, wubwoo - Cortes lol thanks :-) |

during beta, there was a test with a docking scene wich did take quite some time if u only made short distances animation was nice but to time consuming and was removed soon after ________________ I don't DO graphics, here's a sig anyway, wubwoo - Cortes lol thanks :-) |

I always imagined that the stations had drones all over thier surface that would go out and fetch a ship and tow it inside.

Edited by: Vorphalak on 28/02/2006 09:30:56 I think what Piotr means is, don't change the way docking and jumping works, change the looks of stations and gates instead.
But, tbh, I really find it hard to imagine how a station accessible from every direction would look like...basically it'd have to be a giant dock, open to all sides. Which would be a really stupid thing in terms of controlling "traffic" and defense. Wouldn't look too hot either I'm afraid

Originally by: Brastagi 360 degrees docking station anyone?
Aye, a docking sphere with ledges and girders meant to connect visiting vessels, attached to the main station through a long beam hosting cargo and personel transporters, long enough to reduce the projection of the mainstation on the sphere to a minimum making docking possible from 95% of all possible directions. Also surrounded by a forcefield which is opaq to the eye as well as other prying electronics (solves the issue of not being able to display all docked ships) through which you'd need to negotiate a passage by requesting a docking permission. Inside, shipsystems only vital for basic lifesupport are allowed to be kept online. Vessel is towed into place by docking drones.
The detail will be skipped at a docking ofc as to not become tedious/timeconsuming, but the concept would be in line with the idea of being able to dock from all angles
A jumpgate would be even simpler, but not surrounded by an opaq forcefield ofc, rather a jumpfield vaguely visible to the naked eye, surrounding the jumpgate mechanism itself.
Piece o easy
