For a game that just averages about 150 megs. And this is from a friend (I started a corp with a forum where so far about 13 people have joined EVE with me) and 3 of us have memory leaks. Me, the fella who took this shot and another.
I've been reading that apparently this problem isn't 'too' widespread so it hasn't been addressed but surely with more and more people signing everyday shouldn't this be looked into?

Fact
After trying every solution posted and some not posted I have EvE running more stable, but it is still eating up the mem in my 512m machine, need more mem but until the money is there... Best helpers were Turn off Mem Mapping, drops EvE's VM size from 1.5gig to 400meg Reset the buffersize back to 80 (No loss in perf) Run O&O Clevercache set for Max Memory Run a proggy like RAMfreer, to assist in monitoring the mem usage in realtime After a few tweaks I got EvE running with better FPS, less system lag and more stability, and the mem leak issue seems to not happen or only 1 reboot per night.

Fact, Using the LCD Screen on my Logitech G15 Keyboard to watch my CPU/RAM use, so i can Dock, Quit, and re-start Eve BEFORE I CTD, In Pvp Again.
first boot, vent and eve running, 45% Cpu usage, 48% Ram usage, cpu stays about the same, however I can sit and watch the Ram creep up to 99% usage, right before it CTD's, only way to avoid the ctd's i've found is when it hits 98 or 99%, Dock, quit, and restart eve, which has been working, but pretty crappy to have to do

FACT - If CCP states that:
"Recommended system for optimal performance: Processor: P4 1GHz+ RAM Memory: 256MB or higher 3D Accelerator: 64MB or higher video card"
The 512 MB RAM is "more than recommended" and the players that don't notice they are having memory leaks must be playing with 1 GB ou 2 GB RAM computers.
The guy saying that he can play EVE for 6 or 8 hours and the memory "only" reach 900 MB of usage isn't a reason to CCP don't look into this problem. Again, I must say: 256 MB is the recommended.

Helped me, Does it help u ??
Go to your eve directory Right click the exe file and go to compatibility and set for Win 98/ME
Sounds stoopid but I now have 50% more avail memory and doesn't drain. Needs a good 6 hour session to assess properly.
Try it

FACT if I ever saw one.
It is especially bad when shooting stuff in large gangs - maybe it has something to do with the gunfire effects, shooting things, or having lots of stuff on your overview/screen for long periods of time?
Yesterday we happened to be shooting at something with a large gang, during this operation Eve memory usage went up from the normal 150-200 MB to a whopping 650 MB (!!) during an op that took less than an hour in total. Just before the op finished, memory using was growing at a rate of somewhere between 2-5 MB/minute. This is not some trivial, long-term, you-might-have-to-relog-once-a-day kind of memory leak we're talking about here.
Many others in our gang reported having the same problem.
I didn't wait for Eve to crash, but relogged, as even teamspeak was starting to break up and everything was lagging like hell (and not because of the server this time, that much is for sure ).
Even the suggestion that this effect might be a myth, well, let me put it like this: MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA HAHAHAHA HA HA HAHAHAHAHAH (running out of breath) HA HA HA HA.
I hope I'm making myself clear.
(Which is not to say that it can be very hard to find the exact cause of this problem. I suggest one of the devs to come fly in one of our big gangs sometime and see what happens)

Fact.
Before RMR i could play EVE in a window absolutely fine, minimal to no lag at all. After RMR, pagefile goes up to 700-800 and is unplayable. Only way ive found to fix this is to play full screen. Performance still isnt as good as it was.

Lets just throw in some facts:
- a game allocating lots of memory in short times (specificially the 2-5 MB/sec posted above) when "shooting stuff in large groups" - not per se a memory leak. Stuff needs memory. The more stuff on the screen, its quite likely the client allocates more memory.
- a game allocating lots more memory than the manufacturer states (256 MB) - not per se a memory leak. This is standard marketing speech. Since Windows allows you to use a page file to page out unused memory pages to disk and thus virtually gives you more memory, this is what most software manufacturers do, not just CCP. (That a machine with 256M is "trashing", i.e. writing stuff to and from the page file as context switches occur, e.g. between Eve and another app, and hence becomes dead slow ... thats another story).
I have seen people use the terms memory "leak" and "lack" interchangably the last days and this is just plain wrong. A memory leak occurs when an application (presumably written in a language that leaves memory management to the programmer like C) allocates memory from the operating system ('malloc', 'new' calls for those who wonder) and then does not free it (or all of it) with a corresponing 'free' or 'delete' call. Almost every major program I have seen (and I worked for a company producing commercial memory checkers) has memory leaks - its only that when its a long-running process and the leak happens in a loop that it accumulates and starts to show. Thats why restarting the game helps with a memory leak - the OS reclaims the memory when the process (i.e. game) ends.
Hence, the symptom of a memory leak is that your free memory decreases until (usually) the OS kills the process in self defense. Using 64 bit Windows will not make leaks go away, it MIGHT seem to help because the process can simply allocate more memory from the OS.
There is a whole range of other memory corruption errors besides leaks (without going into details) and debugging such things is not always trivial, especially when allocation and deallocation reside in different libraries, or maybe even third party code. There are tools to help with this, such as Valgrind or Purify, but I fully understand if CCP does not give some timeline for this.
The point is, observing windows memory decrease and then the game crash is LIKELY to be a memory leak but a lot of other observations in this thread taken as evidence of a leak oversimplify the whole matter.
Disclaimer: Not a fanboy.

Good points about client side issues.
However, beyond that there is obviously an issue server side that is decimating performance in specific systems to the point they have to 'restart' those systems and not the whole cluster. If we are all exiting and restarting our clients and find that we can't get in, then a memory leak on the client side doesn't explain this. I really believe CCP is telling the truth when they say they can't pinpoint the cause because there is just plain a lot of code to go through.
It will be found however, so I'm not worrying.

Edited by: Sir Juri on 05/03/2006 14:54:12 Edited by: Sir Juri on 05/03/2006 14:52:58 well in all fairness ram usage game allocated bla bla and buffer size aint the same. Dont know if game is badly coded or the code of buffer size allocation in .ini file screws with rest but its helps. After dooin it my .exe file of game actually demands less then the 250mb now and I never get ram issues anymore (still to be seen in a few weeks tho.) Now why I think its like this is when game experience ram drain (not real one but one that is fixed on players part) you get windows low virtual memory were it then according to my comp tries to allocate more ram, BUT here it commes nothings happening still only 250mb saying to .exe file and BAM screws everythin up. After allowing game to "accept more ram" by saying so in .ini file my .exe allways 100mb never higher no virtual memory loss no ram lagg whatsoever...
So conclusion, if you have 512RAM or 1gig (like me and I did experience BAD RAM drain) or 256 allways almost put most ram in buffer size to eve. I put 700 can run everything np with any programs in any period of time and never have to reboot comp anymore. Got only 256 then our buffer is only 80 its VERY low so raise it to 200 youll only need 56 or top 80 for rest of your stuff and windows. FACT=1gig with buffer 80 ingame equals 256ram with 80buffer (general speaking.)
PS: server crash to desktop still messed up tho however I tried so much stuff so I figure its a prob on there end of the game...
Also im not supprised CCP dont tell anyone about the RAM allocate buffer size etc like in SWG thousands of peps crashed daily and wouldnt stop untill I and others spread to all on forums that prob was due to service pack 2 buggs, now did SOE inform other ppl about it after we or at same time? no and still ppl crash in that game due to SP2 buggs with no SOE/CSR informin them... Im a noob, bear with me :P |

The minimum requirements of 256mb of RAM doesn't mean that EVE will only use 256mb of ram or less, most programs use a lot more and use your harddisk to swap.
of course if you still have many harddisk swaps with 2gb, there is:
or a bug in EVE or you didn't set your virtual ram settings correctly (right click my computer, goto advanced tab-> performance -> again advanced tab -> virtual memory.
The best way is to set your virtual ram so that you have a minimum of 1GB (virtual + normal ram) and a maximum of 2GB (virtual + normal ram)
for example if you have 512MB ram, you will set the minimum virtual ram to 512, and the maximum to 1512.
(2gb users, set it to min 0, max 100)
maybe this will help? ~ toasted! ~ |

Its a leak, initial VM usage when starting the game is roughly 250M. Some hours later I have seen it as high as 850M. Been attempting to establilsh some type of connection to what I have been doing when, and correlate that to mem usage jumps, but havent come up with anything concrete thus far.

I have the leak too and I suspect it's related to graphics in some way.
Back when I first started playing EVE, I would sometimes idle while in stations. One time I afk'ed for a while in the station with the blue color scheme and the rotating message banner on the left side of the screen and when I came back my RAM usage had almost doubled (I have an external LCD screen I use to monitor my system stats). I noticed that the rotating banner was stopping for an instant at about the same location every time, like it kept loading the texture for it on every revolution. I've got a hunch it's related specifically to ATI cards, as most folks that say they don't have a problem use Nvidia cards. I'm running an Radeon 9800 Pro.
Nowadays, I keep the camera zoomed out pretty far for operational reasons (easier to play when I can see a larger area!) and keep the camera turned to keep those station rotating banners off-screen and that seems to keep the leak under control fairly well. It's still present, but my 1gig of RAM rarely gets above 60% utilization after several hours of playing (with about 34% utilized before I start EVE).

No memory leak here. You will see increased memory usuage to a point as the game caches more stuff. But it will stabilize. Which is not a leak. And since very few people are experiencing a leak i'm willing to bet it's your computers and not the game.

I've got, Twin P3.4HT's Systems one has the BFG 7800GTOC one just the onboard Intel Graphic's, and one AMD 1.0 with a Radion. right after the blood patch, i said frag it, formatted the whole system and reinstalled windows, and eve. Mem Leak continued on both P4's and the AMD. their last Patch to fix a few problems and it dissapered. before it, i'd watch the ram slowly creap till 99% on my LCD Keyboard Display and then CTD, I've updated BIOS, Chipset, Videocard Drivers, and all windows Xp (home on the P4's, Xp Pro sp1 on the AMD) updates, except on the AMD, Sice your running pretty much the same thing i am, i'd suggest, updateing your Bios/Chipset/Video card drivers, if your have already done that, delete eve, and do a fresh install, see if that does the trick. I've just started playing EVE on a 14-day trial. I'm seeing the 'leak'. I have a 3.0G HT P4, GF7800GT, 2GB of ram. Some interesting data for passers-by:
The game usually starts off using 180-200 MB of ram. The game is extremely responsive in this state, and everything is happy happy. I've been doing the 'story' missions (a lot of courier missions with a lot of jumping around) for the Caldari, and after a while I noticed the game using 890 MB of ram. Ouch. The game at this point was EXTREMELY jumpy, very slow to respond, and rather unpleasant. Restarting the game cleared it up.
Basically, when the game starts eating 400-ish MB of ram I seem to notice the evil lag. I still had plenty of system ram left over (the rest of my computer was responding very quickly for me), but Eve was just totally hosed when it was in the 890-ish MB state.

You know what...
The sick thing is all of a sudden last night this whole leak thing stopped. The game rarely goes above around 250mb now. Since the behavior stopped, however. I have noticed a giant stutter every minute or two. It's almost too... regular... as if something in the game is happening on schedule and causing it to hiccup.

FACT!
I've been soaking this game for all its worth and am still on the test drive. Yet today I noted it getting slower and slower...
Checked resources and found EVE.exe with 1.45GB of a 2Gig RAM load soaked up and my available RAM was falling like a stone.
Rig specs: AMD64 3200 2 Gig RAM 128mb Vid (NVidia 6600GT) MSI 734 chipset Mobo Win XP/Pro All drivers updated.
Possible a patch is out there yet that I don't have? Might mitigate this mess. Leak though is definite.

I dont think there is to much more we can do as users ccps turn by now im sure.
I still think it has somethnig to do with local chat, it started when a change was made to that, showing us leave local better & arrive next system before jump was even complete.
Last night running 2 alts jumping in & out after each other that drove it crasy, I could almost make the whole warp before local had updated to the new system.

Hey, I am having a memory leak issue too.
I just noticed after my first Power of II account. Normally I run 5 accounts at once without any problems, but after the recent bloodlines update sings seemed wonky, and I bought a new powerof II account anyway, but that account EATS ram, untill the game stops fucntionsing (around 760MB) and the game itself is running as exefile.exe which is weird, I thougth I had a trojan or something because untill now EVE has always been EVE.exe. But, yes, MAJOR memory leak! Major, I've seen the game as high as 1.49GB ram thats insane.

Hmmm, whats more,
When I close Eve, the exefile.exe remains in memory holding however much ram it was holding when eve was open, this is true whether you have multipel accounts open or not.
CCP HELP!!!

Here's my take on the memory leak issue.
P4/2.8ghz 1gb memory 64mb MX440 I COULD NOT run the game windowed. Within like 15 minutes of launching, the memory usage had shot through the roof to around 700m.
I switched to fullscreen, and I could run for like 6 and 7 hour gaming stretches without any problems at all.
Last week I upgraded to a new video card. 128mb 6200. Guess what? Now I can run in Windowed mode for 6 and 7 hour stretches and the memory usage never seems to go past like 400-500m.
We won't even go into the CPU usage of Windowed on the MX440.
So my take on this memory leak is that (at least for me) it is related to the video subsystem, and specifically in the part of the subsystem that lets EVE run windowed.

Yesterday EVE Froze solid. I have Taskmanager running on my 2nd monitor along with MBM 5 and NVIDIA Mixer. I watched exefile.exe climb from 400M to about 600M in about 1 minute and was gaining fast when I killed EVE. I can guarantee if I didn't kill it it would have ate my 2GBs in no time...

A good way to show it fastest is to have 2 account on same exe then take a short run jumping so 1 exits the system as the other enters, that seem to kill me pretty fast & shows why i think its local related.
The last thing to ever update is local, you should be able to use auto pilot with same ships & set um running a bit apart. 5 to 10 jumps should do.
recent seems a bit better & like there is a sneaky cleaner, even minimizing seemed to clean up the ram a few times. iv seen it as low as 5meg anything 100 up & im getting suspect unless ya got a big gang on screen. _______________________________________

Edited by: Grez on 04/04/2006 01:33:56 Simple fix then, don't use two accounts at the same time...
Game was only ever designed for one...
And the reason minimizing removes CPU usage and memory utilization, is because when games un-focus, they basicly stop doing what they're doing, and so don't need as much time from the CPU, or need memory. Simple case of EVE, if you minimize it, it doesn't need to monitor the mouse/keyboard imputs, neither does it have to draw any models or anything else. The reason memory usage goes up, is simply because the longer you leave it running, the more textures EVE has to store, and the more things it loads into the memory. If it's not unloading properly, then it's probably a system related thing. If it's happening to a lot of you, try find something related BETWEEN your systems, this may help CCP identify what the hell is going on (IE, the cap lag bug is most commonly found on the NFORCE2 chipset, it's now up to CCP to fix that).
Those of you running multiple accounts at the same time and complaining of high memory usage, should stop running two or more accounts at the same time. CCP have said it once, and they keep saying it, EVE was never, ever designed to run more than one instance of EVE at one period of time. It's just like any other game.
CCP can only do so much to find a memory leak, if indeed there is one. But you can't just expect them to magicly find the line of code that might be producing this on only a selected few... Help them and try and find something common between those of you who have this 'memory leak'.

No you miss understood, its just faster to show or make happen wile running 2, I still get it with 1 running only but take a wile longer.
The minimize also I know when its minimized its not the main task so wile miminzimed its uses less but im talking about after you unminizime it then stays low again.
Taskman will stay onto to watch wile ya play.
It dosnt effect everyone for shure but I have 3 pc I can use total & all 3 do it with varying installs 1 fresh 1 very old but cleaned 1 old uncleaned & all 3 have it.
Look around you there is to many with this issue, im shure alot in your allaince also have it, between us all almost every type of hardware & sofeware setup is coverd & tested ever fix.
The client is corrupting something & even if it only happens our end its so many users now hat ccp should be looking into it, I cant belive they cant make 1 test pc have it since so many have. _______________________________________

10-20 people on the forums isn't everyone, and it isn't a lot... There's more people playing it without a problem... Like I said, find the common between your hardware, and diagnose it so that it's easier for CCP to find and fix.

I too have the wicked Memory Leak.. I have to Log every 2hrs or so.. sometimes sooner. After shutting down EVE it has a habbit of running for an Addl 15 mins. I am by no means new to computers and basicly the EXEFILE.EXE process goes from 100-150 to 300-400 and stays that way.. I cannot even stop the process sometimes... I could throw up a screenshot but I am sure you have seen em.. All I wanna know is .. Is there a work around? And don't tell me memory manager.. as I run SEVERAL games and have never needed one. This needs to be fixed.. I also start locking up in game occasionally and get the 1 sec lock up blues.. skipping thru a fleet battle at 1.2 FPS is NO FUN.. :( Bleh.. Let's get on the ball CCP.
Loyal 3+ Yr Player.. I just wanna fix.. :)

I run MaxMem - keeps it from getting silly out of control.
My solution was simpler - 1:Turn off indexing - every time it writes a file to the drive, it wastes time and memory indexing it. 2:Hammer down the pagefile. Go to the pagefile/virtual memory settings and turn off everything that's automatic and set it manually to zero in both fields. Reboot. Ignore the warnings and slowdown. Go back in, set both field to your memory size. Reboot.
What you just did was force the machine to have one big single swap-file that it never tweaks with. On my box, it's 512/512 - a half gig chunk that never changes. If you can defragment your HD first, it helps immensely as it will be one contiguous file as well.
And my memory leaks went (mostly) away(direct-x is still a source of all sorts of memory glitches). MaxMem brute-forces the memory to clean itself up when it gets past 90%. Run Eve for 12 hours at a time - no problems at all. And no having the disk thrash itself to death cleaning up files when I quit, either.

I submitted a bug report for this sequence: 1. Boot PC. 2. Launch TaskManager. 3. Launch EVE fullscreen. (Character in station.) 4. Alt-Tab from EVE to TaskManager. EVE taking up about 256k, which is set in ini file. 5. Walk away from PC. 6. Return 1.5 hrs later. 7. EVE now using almost 800k, with no display or player activity.
Might be sound related...when I get a chance, I may try it with sound disabled.

Moron there is peeps trying to help peeps wile ccp should also be looking into it but i think they dont even read his forum.
You think people wanna spend there game & forum spamming time in a help forum ?.
Now are you also saying your evefile.exe was using 780+Mb ? if so then your also showing the leak. only a massive gang should get ya to around 200mb wile that gangs on screen.
The rebooting end is just not so well made pcs, maybe VIA chipsets, decent machine just gets laggy & eve gets slow in certain areas, jumping mainly.
Just add maybe you mist a few days ccp even got the mem leak on he servers or was they just whineing to us customers & making it up ?. _______________________________________

Edited by: SandCrawler on 13/04/2006 15:39:14 EVE Peoples,
Hello, and welcome to the only public location where you can find others who are having the same problem as yourself. That is, unless your trolling, and you really don't have any reason to post.
For the issue of memory leak to be considered a myth is a true sign of naivete'. There are literally 10's of thousands of combinations of software and hardware playing EVE each day, and I for one can assure you all that EVE can, and does work off of 180mb of memory. Ths is well below the 200, 500 and even 800mb that some of you have mentioned (holy crap guys, what did you think was going on?) I have only recently been working for extended periods of time on EVE, and only because of that, did I stumbled into this quagmire of memory inadequacy.
We'll, I can't say I wouldn't blame CCP for looking into this,(as I can imagine a great many players are affected by the leak), but for the time being, the program FreeRAM Xpis available for DL at www.download.com/3000-2086-10070530.html. I stumbled across this program after reading your reviews of how well MemMani worked, .. tried it, and then read in the latest copy of COMPUTER SHOPPER about it's bigger better brother, FreeRAM. I cannot vouch for it's Win98 compatibility, and if you have that OS, I am sorry, but for the rest, this program has worked for all members of my corporation that have so far DL'd and installed the software.
Thank you all for the read, and I hope this helps your game. SC

Wow so just because you don't have issues, obviously the entire playerbase sure can't have them either can they? 20 bucks says you don't even know what a memory leak is...
This needs to be fixed stat. I am new to this game, and enjoy it immensely, but to watch my free memory dwindle down to under 100 megs on a system with a gig of RAM is not cool at all. This should not be happening, plain and simple,

Edited by: Rourke Kendon on 17/04/2006 00:39:04 Well Eve ppl!
Fact! Seriously, there is absolutely NO doubt!
Everyone of you can watch it by pressing the combination "strg+alt+shift+M" ingame.
An ingame monitor tool will pop up not only showing the VM-Size continously crawling up but also giving an information about where the leakage does arise from.
Change the tab to "rot" and you will see several objects with one of them named "TRIUI.UICONTAINER" being created and not being destroyed again. (Seen from the red color!)
Hovering the mouse across the menu panel will tremendously increase the number of instances as you will be aware of. At the same time the game eats memory like popcorn. (Rate is like 2MB per minute)
So, thats it CCP. It has something to do with that container-thingy. Now its up to you. I really appriciate this game and I am in trial now. But honestly, I am not very keen on spending like 15EUR per months in a game featuring ....uhm.... lets say "fundamental" bugs!
Ah, my system stats are:
P4 2,4Ghz 512MB ATI 9500Pro/9700
Hope this post will help to find a solution.
