Yes it does matter. Because now the female population which is tiny bit of Eve has too prove that they are actually female and no one believes them anymore, because some of male characters are exploiting the believers who think they are female. So it is very hard too trust a female character. And I for sure do not trust 1 of them. For me they are all male. And all we be assimalated for the collective.

LOL good post idea. Well i think these video games are for you to make it what you want. i know i want to be a female. id lock myself in my room all day and night. Im fairly sure females would like to get some idea what its like to be a male.
Its a cool way to broaden your mind. lol i act female on my female character and get given stuff from all the drooling 12 year olds. its all in good sport though.

I breifly thought about trying out a female achura character because the female achura is hawt, while the guy is just plain ugly
but then i realized how freaking weird it would be once i got on team speak so i decided not to ---------------------

Whats a more pressing subject is...
Why do we not have "men only" corporations? Why do men have a massive lack of solidarity. Hell look at women, they make "women only" groups in bloody netball, are they that insecure about their femininity that they require the group presence as a whole to make sure they are feminine enough?
Men.. we dont do that as a rule, but then we certainly dont go "yeaaahh! im a man" we tend to say things like "aye im a bloke" or "aye.. im a lad". Never the word "Yes, I am a man".
Bill Bailey (british comedian) actually had a point during his bewilderness tour when he did that demonstration thing. Its a rather odd phenomenon. Men are much more comfortable just being something else (something other than a "man"). Women have so much insecurity they require the group participation in order to assert their femininity. ----- Memorable Quotes <Jarltan Dimtras> OH MY GOD MY GF IS A DUDE |

I think only guys that are insecure with their own masculinity actually give a crap wether or not it's "bad" to play a girl if you're male. Myself, I go for the looks. If the male look better, then that's what I'll play. But like 95% of the MMO's out there, the girls have more style in EVE. I know you don't see your portrait much, but still.
That being said, there is a huge difference between "playing" a female character and "roleplaying" one...

I have to admit I'm a guy, if I remember rightly I let a friend make how I look. They decided that it would be better for me to spend all my time looking at a chic rather then a guy.

Heh funny even when the girl sits with guys in the same room, and play the same games on lan, about 95% of the boys say "she is no girl" - and that even when she is standing right before them.
The only game I ever played a female character was in wow a nightelf druid. (Was motivated by the intro movie )

Originally by: Kitty Stormwarden Heh my reason is simple. I would rather have the picture of a girl staring at me all day than a guy btw my wife also plays and she has a girl character I also know one or two other real females and they also play females....maybe its guy thing but then if I was a girl I would also play a girl. I am a ******* after all. But if I was I girl.....I wouldnt be playing eve.....imagines mirrored ceiling.
OMG Kitty on a forum.... RARE..
I'm a guy and play both girls and guys... so that would make me a chick with a **** well no thats not right PINK PINK PINK PINK PINK ERISGREEN Eris <3 Meh!

Does it matter?? Good question - as the gender discussion has become in the last decades more and more relevant ... you should mean - it doesn't matter. But i think our everyday online-life proves this assumption wrong.
I don't wanna lead this discussion in a direction where only those who study social sciences are willed to follow - but at this topic i think Judith Butler should be mentioned.
Originally by: http://www.colorado.edu/English/ENGL2012Klages/butler.html Gender is thus a fantasy enacted by "corporeal styles that constitute bodily significations." In other words, gender is an act, a performance, a set of manipulated codes, costumes, rather than a core aspect of essential identity. Butler's main metaphor for this is "drag," i.e. dressing like a person of the "opposite sex." All gender is a form of "drag," according to Butler; there is no "real" core gender to refer to.
This means - gender isn't our biology determining our role in society - it's far more our ability to act in a certain way ... Judith Butler puts this in an extreme point of view - even the classic types of gender like heterosexual male/female aren't stereotypes in the way of blueprints which are the base of gender ... this means - being a heterosexual male isn't a pre-set/basic ... it's more a special form of gender. From my point of view - this is the most liberal and egalitarian approach to the topic of gender - 'cause when there's no basic determination what is normal and what not - everything becomes/can become normal.
This would mean - it doesn't matter if you are a male and ROLEPLAYING a female and vice versa - because such things like "real men" (heterosexual male with the well known attributes) aren't viable for judgement about gender. The only important thing is - do you (the roleplayer) feel well in your position - or is it for you only a "must-to-do"?
Though - things i know about a virtual person (avatar + everyday talk in chat/forums/and so on + TS) create a imagination of the person in my mind - and you can trust me - even if a male plays a male character .... i'm really surprised when i see a foto of this certain person. Because my imagination and the reality doesn't fit that well. I think this effect is quite common - our imaginations are prejudices formed by our daily experience, our socialization and the tiny bits of information we get over the virtual worlds.
At all you can say - it shouldn't matter, but it does ... the extrema "male playing female"/"female playing male" are only the obvious ones.
@tyrus ex, nice to see someone else who reads such stuff ... now i'm not the first one to post this/my "favorite-link-to-the-escapistmagazine" in this thread ...

Ahem ... we HAVE men only corporations (in a structural way) ... but no one is talking about this fact ... imho the reason for grouping up of girls has something to do with preset expectations of the other players - the so called "femininity" you are mentioning - is one of those preset values. A girl has to act like a "girl" to get recognized and respected by male. Especially on the internet this become in some ways extreme - look at the escapist article. Forcing someone into such a scheme is common. And not that fun for the forced person. /me thinks it's for girls much easier to be themselves when they are in a group of people which face the same problem. So i wouldn't say they are insecure about their femininity - it's more like: they don't like playing roles they didn't choose.

Isn't it possible that the mentioned need for group participation to assert their feminity is a symptom of forcing someone into a certain role?? The standard set values for the term "femininity" are in some ways patriachical (sp?) - isn't it possible that the "insecurity" is only a sign that people are forced into some genderroles which doesn't reflect their reality?? _________________________________________

It would be interesting to see the results if people did physically change to the opposite sex for a day or so. The girls who would now be men would try peeing standing up and not getting their feet wet. As for the guys who've changed to girls - they probably wouldn't even get out of bed except to drag the large mirror nearer!

naahh .. changing sex is boring (especially in stupid movies) ... much more interesting is the gender aspect (the social reality of sexuality)
btw - many stupid stereotypes in your post .. _________________________________________

I've played both male and female characters in EVE Online as well as World of Warcraft, and there was just so much stuff I recognized in those articles. Both are great reads, thanks for that!

I come from Anarchy Online, where i had a male char.
I didn't actually know what EVE was about when i subscribed (yeah, i didn't even do the trial), so i imagined seeing my avatar walking and running... and chose a female character... So now i am stuck all my existence in this game with a female char...
BTW, i modelled my avatar just like a former colleague who was pretty... hot... heheh
I am a guy in RL (hence my signature, just in case someone decides to make pickup comments) .

I generally assume everyone I meet in EVE is male anyway. Unless I hear a girls voice in teamspeak, you're just another guy trying to convince us that you're a girl (for some very odd reason).
