Hi,
I did a search looking for an answer to this, couldn't find it.
I'd thought pirates were unable to scan through secure containers in, for instance, my Ity's cargo hold, but read something suggesting otherwise the day before.
With the increase in hi-sec suicide pirating, this is a bit of a concern, so can anyone confirm whether or not a pirate can scan the contents of a secure cargo container, or not?
Thanks.
Eyam.

Wrong. Cargo scanners ignore secure containers.
The "increase in high sec ganking" means DON'T FLY 200m OF STUFF IN A 500k SHIP! And fit some shield extenders.

Thank you.
Just to make this absolutely explicit, you mean that cargo scanners see through secure cargo containers?

Player's cannot scan the inside of secure cargo containers within your ship. NPC's though can.

Thsnk you.
Supplementary question then, do pirates see an empty cargo hold, or do they see a secure container that they cannot scan through?

a cargo scanner scans one layer: it sees everything you see when you open up your cargo, but unlike you, the scanner cannont open anything else. It will not appear to be empty, just filled with secure cargo cans. If (when) you get shot down, the secure containers act like standard ones in space, meaning that if you die, your stuff won't be safe just because it was in a can. Warning: many people will suicide you if they see secure cans because it costs them very little and the possibility for a high reward is up there. Of course, there are those who will be fended off by the chance they will get very little/nothing out of the kill.

Thanks very much :)
So, if I were to get a cheap insured Ity 1, put a single secure - & empty - container in it, fit a few cheap modules, & fly it by some hi sec pirates, is there a real danger that they might lose a rather more expensive ship to Concord, for virtually no gain?
That might be a bit of a shame, if it worked out like that.

Some say that trick no longer works.
Best is just to transport valuable gear (+50M) in a fortified ship, and if necessary, have an escort to scare off the can looters.

Beware, secure containers do not hide the contents from players. Apparently they used to, but that game mechanic was changed some time back. Check out this thread for more info:

Here's the most relevant quote from that thread.

(edit) I used PL-O Shipment Probe form a Helios btw.
Ok, I tested it as well. It sees everything, witht he exception of cans. When someone told me before that this was the case I did not believe him. I am so used the old ways when you COULD NOT see what was inside the cans.
One question remains - WHEN did this change occur, and why werent we notified? This must have slipped under the radar. Most people will remember, it used to be that contents of cargo containers inside the ships were NOT visible under the scan. I guess it definatley calls for new tactics.

Interestingly enough, it seems that plastic wrapping and wood act as an effective barrier to scanners.
So escrow items to yourself, put the crate in ship, away you go.

Ran a test or two yesterday....
Neither secure cans, nor 'plastic wrap' (from a self created Courier job) prevent a ship with a cargo scanner from seeing what's inside.
The cargo scanner sees all as if the can or the wrapping weren't there.

So, basically you are saying that Minmitar ships are impervious to scans? _______ See you in Vegas! |

Thanks for that. Seems the urban legend is wrong then.
