Planescape Torment followed by the fallout series ========= "I am not saying there should be capital punishment for stupidity, but why can`t we just take the safety labels off everything and let the problem fix its self |

I liked FFX, but it was nowhere near the best in the series. For me (and many others in the thread) the best by far was FF VII. I've never played a game where I actually cared for the characters as much as I did there. I was really really sad when Aeris died....
Best RPG ever for me was Planescape Torment. I loved the Planescape campaign setting and they captured it perfectly in the game. It was the first of that genre that wasn't totally dominated by hack & slash, and the story was incredible.

2nd Anything on Bioware's Infinity engine. Baldurs Gate, Icewind Dale, both of their sequels. I still have BG2 installed on my PC to play during Eve DT.
3rd Diablo 2 Multiplayer with mates is still the bomb.
I have a big problem with recent RPG-on-rails. By that, I mean an RGP where you go from areas A to B to C until you complete the game (think almost any FPS as an example) Ultima VII was the best example I know o getting away from this. You would start off on A, work towards B, but then have C/D/E to explore at any time you like. Before you knew it, you were halfway down a sub-plot without realising it. The best part though, is that these subplots weren't too much hassle. Unlike Baldurs Gate series, where you go off on a subplot, come back to the main plot without actually gaining anything.
QFT there. U7 was, and still is, one of the greatest RPGs ever made. I bought the CD dealie they put out a few years back, but could never get it to run halfway decent . As far as console games go, gotta give my vote to FF7, great game that I still play from time to time even today. /me runs off to play FF7

FF7, tbh. I'd say deus ex if it was an rpg. Morrowind was great too, but too easily exploitable without playermade patches and mods applied.

I must be too old for games anymore....... I want my Wizardry: Proving grounds of the mad overlord. course I dont think you young pups remember that or much of the numerous sequels... If memory serves it was the first RPG franchise made to earn itself sequels in the market.

Fallout, no contest.
Baldurs Gate series is good but I'm so friggin tired of the D&D worlds...
Arcanum...
If they would have combined the graphics from Temple of elemental evil with the story and environment from Arcanum, that would have been my pick.
ToEE = Excellent graphics IMO, bad/no story
Arcanum = Bad graphcs for its time, but the environment/story was awesome.
Also Vampire: Bloodlines makes an honorable mention, which would make Troika Games one of my favorite game developer before their demise. -------------------------

1. Daggerfall
Without question the biggest and most immersive RPG ever made. You could do virtually everything and go everywhere, and you can play it almost indefinately without having seen it all. Also, it features as still the only game (series) the simple mechanic of improving only those skills you actually use, making roleplay as your character a lot mroe viable, let alone the billions of character combinations possible...
It was bugged, yes, but it's just because of it's sheer size that the testers couldn't possibly test it all.
2. Baldur's Gate 2
This game is a lot more linear than the #1, but it has a better story for it's main quest, and still a hell of a lot to do besides that. I still miss a little freedom in it though, since the beaten path is pretty much the only you can take.
Still, the story, and especially the character design is flawless. It's the only game so far which has really memorable characters, like the stonc Edwin or the crazy Minsc. These have been introduced in the first game, yes, but the way you can interact with your own party members makes it better in part 2. Romantic relations.... Aerie comming up to you and asking if you want to sleep seperately from the rest tonight is just a stroke of brilliance :)
There are dozens more RPG's which are good, but none of them even comes near the excellence of the aforementioned ones.

Long live Deus Ex...

Yet you don't think planescape torment deserves a mention. Or haven't you played it? If not, go play it, it's awesome. If you can find it. Graphics are a bit dated of course, but still good enough if you ask me. ~{When evil and strange get together anything is possible}~ A tool is only useless when you don't know how to use it. - ActiveX The grass is always greener on the other side. - JoCool |
