I was ratting in R3 with a couple of corpmates in my Merlin and had lot of fun (and made mucho ISK).
But I was barely a fly on those BS rats and was only able to damage significantly the smaller ships.
Then I thought of the Target painter modules! If I can't contribute to the group with tanking or damage, might as well do the support!
How do painters work really? are they worth it for NPC ratting?

Painters increase sig radius on the target.
1. Smaller ships are getting hit more often with turrets (and for more damage)
2. Bigger missiles hitting smaller ships does more damage.
Target Painter is affected by Target Painting (of course), Frequency Modulation and Signature Focusing (larger effect) ----------------------------------------------- My Band's new Demo: Linkage to Torrent |

Target Painters increase the target signature radius. This makes them easier to hit with turrets and make oversized missiles do more damage to them. They work so that if you paint a target it will become larger for all other targets, so good in a group.
In general, if you target paint cruisers then battleships will do more damage to them but cruiser and frigates will not. If you target paint frigates then cruisers and battleships will do more damage to them but frigate will not. They help you doing damage to smaller targets. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

long distance jamming also effects target painters

Your generalization is incorrect.
Painting a ship that you can't hit does not make much difference. But Painting a ship that you can hit resonably well, will make your hits that much better.
So its very good to paint a BS if you have BS guns. But don't think you can paint up a frigate to make those BS guns work on it.
Generally speaking, if you can hit it now but not perfectly, then a painter is worth something. I would only try up-painting undesized ships if I was in a ship with a TP bonus. ____ If your not dyin' your not tryin'. |

I'll give it a try with my gang tonight and see the results. Hopefully that will increase my friends damage on those rats.

Quick note: A target painter will NEVER increase a weapon's damage beyond it's base (after skills and mods applied) I was shooting some structures in my caracal doing 198.9 damage per hit. Turned on Target Painter and still dealt 198.9 However it did increase damage against frigates by close to 30% (which was the sig size increase noted under attributes tab). Damage increased from about 60 to about 80.

And for those you still doesn't understand how target painter works, or the effect of tracking/signature radius etc - why not try the onsite provided guide to tracking & target painting - it's interactive. --------------------
