Turning sound off fixed this problem for me; but there's a better way: I turned off hardware acceleration on my soundcard. Control panel -> sounds and audio devices -> audio tab -> sound playback advanced button -> performance tab. Now I have sound but no crashes. It clips and after a while the music playback gets messed up, but it sure beats silence.

Originally by: Matt Steel Edited by: Matt Steel on 10/03/2006 05:11:51 I had the same problem a couple of months ago, i tried everything, reinstalling the game, running antivirus and antispyware, latest video card drivers.. and kept being booted.. i got an error message saying that hardware drivers were causing the problem, but it did not happen when i turned off sound on the options screen.
So i ditched my audigy drivers and installed the ones i got from www.kxproject.com, these guys are making drivers for all the line of soundblaster cards.
So if you have a soundblaster card try these, they will help and now i play with sound and have never got a reboot since then.
Everyone with this issues.. download that kxproject driver.. it works, better than i expected :)

I'm not running a Soundblaster Audigy sound card.
So where does that leave me? Glad those of you with those expensive sound cards have found a possible solution. But I don't run an Audigy on either PC, and on one PC I have sound completely disabled. It doesn't make a difference with the crashing.

Edited by: Justeesh on 11/03/2006 02:43:02 It must not be your sound card then. I don't have an audigy either, just an integrated card that came with my vaio, which is why I mentioned acceleration as an alterative to driver updates. My crashes most often occurred during combat, rarely anywhere else, and I've noticed several others with those specific symptoms who fixed it by mending sound.
My instinct then is to say, "it's your graphics card!" but maybe there's a third possibility. Anyone have any ideas?

If you get reboots, or thrown back to windows without any message, then it probably is your Memory.
To check if it truly is your memory, use this following tool, which is standard in windows. This is a guide on how to use it, i found it perfect: http://www.sequoyahcomputer.com/Analysis/PerformanceConsole/PerformanceConsole.htm
with it, you can run a log on your memory and you'll see how it behaves when playing. Do this for like 30 to 60 min tops.

(for everyone who is getting random restarts, go to control panel -> system -> advanced -> startup and recovery and uncheck automatic restart)
The BSOD ive been getting is Bad Pool Caller Stop: 0xC2

I had pretty much the same problem when I installed the game for the first time, however I was able to fix it by enabling "DBI FOR AGP TRANSFER" in my bios settings. This worked for my A8V board using an ATI Radeaon 9800 (128mb), but it should also help for any board that supports this option (saw that option with different naming on 3 different boards).
More info: The full name for this BIOS feature is Dynamic Bus Inversion Output for AGP Transmitter. It is an AGP 3.0-specific BIOS feature which will only appear when you install an AGP 3.0-compliant graphics card. When enabled, the AGP controller is allowed to use the Dynamic Bus Inversion scheme to reduce power consumption and signal noise.
When disabled, the AGP controller will not use the Dynamic Bus Inversion scheme to reduce power consumption and signal noise. The AGP bus has 32 data lines divided into two sets. Sometimes, a large number of these data lines may switch together to the same polarity (either 1 or 0) and then switch back to the opposite polarity.
This mass switching to the same polarity is called simultaneous switching outputs and it creates a lot of unwanted electrical noise at the AGP controller and GPU interfaces. To avoid this, the AGP 3.0 specifications introduced a scheme called Dynamic Bus Inversion or DBI. It makes use of two new DBI lines - one for each 16-line set. These DBI lines are only supported by AGP 3.0-compliant graphics cards.
Dynamic Bus Inversion ensures that the data lines are limited to a maximum of 8 simultaneous switchings or transitions per 16-line set. It does so by switching the DBI line instead of the data lines when the number of simultaneous transitions exceeds 8 or 50% of the data lines. This ensures that electrical noise due to simultaneous switching outputs are minimized. In short, DBI improves stability of the AGP interface by reducing signal noises that occur as a result of simultaneous switching outputs. It also reduces the AGP controller's power consumption. Therefore, it is recommended that you enable DBI Output for AGP Trans. to save power as well as reduce signal noise from simultaneous switching outputs.

C-Media BSOD can be fixed by turning the sound acceleration to minimum, causes stutter and music will get messed up at the times.
For those who blame everything and anything and whatnot. Do download a debugging tool from Microsoft: http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/devtools/debugging/installx86.mspx
Install and run after BSOD, choose "file"-open crash dump, what is located in system directory(default is for XP C:\WINDOWS\Minidump) Scroll down the window and look for driver/app names. Then at least you will have some clue what is going on.

I have the exact same problem, but this has only been happening post-RMR- when I enter combat I crash and have to reboot. I turned all sound off, and now it works, but I don't want to play eve without the sound. HELP CCP!

Thanks for helping out. it IS the audion causing trouble, but I uses built in motherboard sound and drivers. Simply put theres a bug in eve that some driver can cope with and others fail. Older/newer drivers will prolly not help you, but you can try other driver vendor for your card, maybe microsoft original driver, or turn it off altogether. CCP pls have a look into this bug as alot of players BSOD because of it!!! --- Live and learn, die and learn more! http://www.dukefoss.com/eve/ |

the problem is with the audigy drivers, I run a soundblaster 24 bit live with no problems. I found this several months ago when I had gotten a audigy 2 gamer. Turning off your sound or ditching the audigy is about the only way to fix it. I spent about 2 week with ccp tracking the issue and al came back to a bad line in the drivers the audigy uses.

I had this same problem but with the SB live! card. In the end I bought a second PC for other reasons so now run two accounts again.
Disabling sound and the usual graphical settings usually help when running two instances anyway (as I'm sure you all know).

This is definately something CCP 'need' to fix. It's clearly an issue with compatability etc. How do we put a request in to have this prioritised?

I can assure you it's not CCP or Eve. It's the audigy 2. It does this with other games as well. I ran a SBlive 5.1 oem for 5 years till it crapped out. I could run 2 instances of eve with no problems till I installed the audigy 2. I thought it was memory as well, seeing as I installed a gig of ram at same time i installed the audigy 2. That isn't necessarily true. I have built in 5.1 sound, and it plays all other games no problem, no crashes whatsoever, so it must be either EVE or my actual machine. EVE isn't a particularily demanding game specswise, so how Half-Life 2 runs perfectly with antialiasing on 6x and all graphics and sound settings on maximum is beyond me. Last night I checked my PC for "Dust Bunnies" and yes, there was a hell of a lot of dust back there. The rear vent was COMPLETELY clogged, so I hope it's just an overheating issue.
It better be

I have also been experiencing my computer rebooting which was making gameplay pretty much impossible and I put it down to overheating. Upon finding this thread I have tried disabling my ingame sound and I've been on all day without a reboot whereas before I probably would've locked up about 10 times. Something is definately wrong with the audio! My sound card is an onboard nvidia jobby.

i have had the gforce 6600gt now ( pcie 256 ddr ) for almost a year and untill rmr i had no problems what so ever, now since rmr i have had sudden reboots to the point i reloaded my entire pc updated every windiws, bios, vid, sound, nic card i could find. the only game on my pc is eve and all this 3 day project did was make the reboots happen sooner and more often. wierd thing is my wife has the exact same pc, with the exact same hardware and software and yet has no problems at all. but i have found it could possable be a problem with norton 2006 so i reloaded yet again and its now letting me load the client and b4 i can type in my username and pass my system reboots.

Yes its an issue with the Audigy 2. But its definately an issue with the way EVE works with the Audigy. I have no problem what so ever with other games and the audigy 2. Only eve. CCP's software clearly has a bug in it that doesnt like this sound card, it may be something minor but its still a problem that CAN be fixed by CCP. To expect Soundblaster to resolve this when only 1 game seems to have issues is a bit tedious.

Well, whilst I was upset about my pc rebooting at random times without any warning, I am now slightly more concrened ablout another problem that has occured since installing RMR.
I now find that after an undetermined amount of time my display freezes and then all I can see is lines across my screen and nothing responds
I then have to reboot my pc anyway...

I have a similar problem that only happens when I run EVE. I have reboots as the others have described. But not always when I go into battle. Once I opened the market and got rebooted, another time I was undocking and got rebooted. But most of my issues happen when loading the game. It does the same thing when changing screens it goes black and reboots system. Or sometimes now since the latest patch it just locks up while loading something and there is no way out of it except a hard boot! I never have issues with any other game or program so it is only logical that it is something in the EVE client that is the problem. Too bad they don't seem to care cause I've never seen a response from them that says they are addressing the reboot issues??? I just see more and more people complaining of the problem??

I have an audigy 2 and haven't had the problem.
I'll second the overheating suggestion. I've noticed that Eve really hammers the CPU especially when warping. My AMD2800 heats up like a toaster.
There is a little freeware program called mbprobe that can help you find out. It puts the temp of your CPU in your system tray.

I have the same problem with intermittent reboots at random times. It's not my memory since I run Battlefield 2 without problems (much heavier game performance-wise). I have on-board sound so no Audigy. I just turned off audio acceleration and will report back if it helps.
