This is coming from the perspective of a relatively new player, less than 4 months, with all sorts of skill points in the wrong skills for combat. I am running level two missions in a Moa. I decline tech secrets part 3 now, but so far can do everything else. Just some thoughts:
1) Even in the moa, you need to have missile skills. The moa gives you 4 guns, 2 missiles. Success does not come by ignoring a third of your combat power. If you mount medium guns, then the missiles become your best (ok, your only) close range weapons for the pesky drones or frigates that get close fast. I used a destroyer for level 1 missions, and became spoiled with all those guns to the point I totally ignored missile skills. Level two missions in the moa were a rude awakening, you need those missile turrets. 2) The best guns to take on kill missions vary with the missions, so there is not a perfect setup. If you have to kill drones, frigate guns with better tracking do more good than missing with medium guns. For the mission to kill the drone silo, medium guns let you kill the silo fast, and you can tank the damage from all the drones till you accomplish the mission objective. But for tech secrets part 1, and some of the others, medium guns at 50 km (using tungsten, not anti matter) let me pick off some of the enemies before I took any damage. That seemed to work a lot better than charging in trying to handle a group single handed in a close range fight. There is a "silence the informant" mission where you warp in very close to a group of frigates; trying to keep at range and snipe worked a lot better than charging the group. With sniping, I don't have to warp out for repairs/shield regeneration, when I charged in like Custer I had about the same success as he did. 3) There are missions where the fight is at 40 km and up, and I cant even use my missiles, but a lot of the kill missions dont let you dictate the range of engagement, or dont let you control what range the fight stays at, so my two assault launchers come in very, very handy. 4) I dont have a lot of comments about what mods to fit, since I can't even use some things. I have the afterburner, medium shield booster, a power diagnostic system, and 1 or 2 reactor control units.
