Has anyone written a guide Shares? I'm trying to figure out how exactly it works. Do they pay dividends and where does the money for dividends come from? the corp bank account? Is it a worthwhile investment? Is the only money to be made from buying low and selling high?
Thanks for any thoughts

As far as I know, there's no guide to Shares.
Every corporation has a starting 1000 shares upon creation of the corp. The CEO/director can increase the ammount of shares through a vote. The CEO/director of the corp can give shares to other characters or corporations. Only the CEO can issue dividend from the corporate wallet.
Currently there's no built-in mechanism to buy or sell shares of corporations automatically or even via market.
However, recently two new corporations were founded which act as ingame stock exchange and exchange commission: EGSE - Eve Galactic Stock Exchange and GSEC - Galactic Stock Exchange Commission. There are a few corps already listed at the stock exchange. It is in a "IN GAME BROWSER (IGB) only" site. YOU MUST ADD THE SITE TO THE IN GAME BROWSERS LIST OF TRUSTED SITES FOR IT TO WORK PROPERLY. the link is (and remember to copy and paste this into the IGB) www.cgincorp.com/eve. From there you can choose to visit the GSEC site and view corporate financial submissions or go to the EGSE site to view stock transactions or make one of your own.
Remember: all investments are based on trust in the corporation you're investing in! EGSE only brings the buyer and sellers together, while GSEC tries to audit the listed corporations and to enforce regular financial reports on the corporations.
Please contact me ingame or at this thread if you want more info. You could also contact the CEO's of the listed corporations and see for yourself if they're trustworthy.

Also, you have to remember that not all shares pay dividends. Some less-than honest person might announce IPO and just sell shares never intending to pay dividends.
So some research on corp and CEO background is recommended.

I'm a little ignorant about how shares work in the real world as well. what type of control do shares command, i assume that as long as the corp leader has control of over 50% it makes no difference. Or are shares simply a way to make money from a corporation without having any form of control over the corp itself, even if you own 100%. there must be some investment bankers out there, or any some who atleast more than nil about these things.
thank again

Edited by: Alanix on 09/03/2006 02:22:44 I'm no investment banker, but in RL, if a person controls the majority of shares in a public corp, they control the corp. There are exceptions, however, since the Securities and Exchange Commission requires outsiders to sit on the Board of Directors, and if the CEO can't control his board, he can have big problems (even if he owns a majority of the stock). In most real-world corporations, when the corp wants to make an important decision, they mail out "proxy vote" forms. You tell them what you want to vote, and however many shares you have is however many votes you have. There are exceptions however; most notably, Google does not allow shareholder votes (from what I've read, that is).
In EVE, it's the same way. If the CEO controls a majority of the shares, they control the corp. EDIT: Both corps in Eve and in RL issue dividends. In Eve, the CEO decides how much money to issue, and it is divided equally per share (the dividend per share is known as EPS--Earnings Per Share). The money comes from the corp wallet.

Dividends =! EPS
EPS = earnings per share, which can be found by
Revenue -CoGS
-Expenses
-Taxes
= Earnings
Earnings/Shares = EPS.
These earnings are then moved to Retained Earnings on the Balance Sheet and can be sent out to shareholders as dividends.
I'm very new to the game, and hope to understand the in game share mechanics better, but with a background of a finance MBA I think it'll be a good time.

Alrighty, how do I issue shares to non-corp members?
And, if someone does come up with a Stock/Shares guide, I'll be all over that.
