Just one example:
When salvaging a wreck, I right click on a wreck and from that I get to choose:
Approach, Orbit Look at, Lock Target Show Info Add (or remove) Wreck from overview Save location Set Name Open Cargo Broadcast Target Broadcast warp to Broadcast align to, Mark wreck as viewed Tag item Abandon wreck, Abandon all nearby wrecks
It is subtly different when I use the overview, the "open cargo" is directly above "remove wreck from overview". I can't tell you how many times I've accidentally removed wrecks from the overview when I really wanted to open the cargo (which brings me to another question... couldn't there be an option to have canisters open once they get within opening distance?) Miniscule fonts (I have increased them as much as is allowed) the multitude of choices (How often will I need to broadcast to alt the importance of a wreck, the need to warp to a wreck, or align to a wreck). I personally have never set a name to a wreck or had the desire to "look at" a wreck.
I'm just wondering if I'm doing some thing completely wrong here (maybe there is a way to play this game without the pull down menus). Maybe there is a way to edit what is viewed in a pull down menu already and I just haven't found it. While the overview is incredibly customizable, you still have to right click on items in the overview and then choose your choice. When you arrive at a dead space pocket with 10's of wrecks to target, tractor beam, loot and salvage all these superfluous choices start to grate on one's psyche (mine anyways). Not to mention my wrists get awfully sore at the end of any playing session .
I would love to have the option to remove/replace all choices in regards to wrecks except lock target and open.

I agree with your sentiment about the horrible clutter of the drop-down menus (the order of menu items is also horrible), and wish CCP would give them some love.
However, they have come up with a highly usable alternative- the Radial Menu. It is much cleaner, clearer and more ergonomical to use with a mouse. I've set it to zero delay on an extra mouse button, making it very accessible. It also has an entry for opening wrecks.
On another note, you are not forced to fill deadspace pockets with wrecks and loot and salvage them all, doing that is a choice you make.

Double click a wreck in your overview to open it. I believe that if you are not within 2500m of the wreck double clicking it will approach it. |

You don't salvage? Or do you wait for 8+ hours while your single tractor pulls them into salvage drone range?
I am calling shennannigans. Either that, or you are leaving all your salvage behind. |

I had no idea what an MTU was, didn't know such a thing existed. It is an excellent solution to the looting/salvaging dilemma. I drop a MTU in each pocket and when I'm done I warp out and come back w/ my noctis (now fitted with 6 salvagers and onlyl 2 tractors) . I park next to the MTU, target and salvage, no tractor beams necessary!
Thanks for the heads up.
As for the overload of choices for nearly everything in game that is right clicked, still would love to see that customizable some day.
Thanks again for the excellent suggestions
