Well Picking what fits your style is always the first rule in picking a race/size combo.
But it should be stated also that due to balance issues (far fewer than we had in the old days BTW), as well intended/practical uses, some ships > than other ships.
It's hard not to see that some races ships get the shaft when it comes to some ship classes, while others have real winners.
IMHO the ammar lost the AF competition overal, but they did pretty well in the specialized AF division.
Of all the races, Gellente seem to be the winners as both of thier AF's are good/excellent for the most PVP minded folks. Caldari coming in at a very close second, and Minmatar coming in at a close third.
Keep in mind I am basing this not on what can kill what in a 1v1 format. IMHO this kind of comparison is very limited and can only ever show at mostwhat you can and cannot hope of soloing well. But consider also that setups can change a win, to a loss almost as easily as forgetting to fit guns...
Gallente do require some nasty skills to get to good levels before you can really claim to be proficient in thier ships, they need to master engineering and other fitting concerns, master hybrids (both rails and blasters as both are equaly useful IMHO), Drones, Armor tanking (mechanics etc), as well as navigation and starship command. Having some decent frigate class missile skills will help as well if you go with the enyo.
Pros and cons of the gallente AF's as I have experienced them in my own PVP misadventures:
Enyo: While capable of soloing decently, this ship is not really meant for this role. You won't be able to use a speed mod, Web, and Scramble as you only have 2 mid slots. But you can do any combination of 2 of those three. Some even double stack webs, or scrambles.
General purpose duties include: Alpha strike/heavy tackler
Fitted with 125MM's + missiles, AB/20KM scrambler and mix of tank and whats needed to fit/boost damage in lows, the Enyo is an excellent ship in a group. It's drone is mostly just for show, and gives it very little real benefit, but that added little DOT can sometimes pull your bacon out of the fire.
As part of a group, your job is to use the longer range scrambler to lay down the initial scramble, and with your guns, fire the first shield splitting salvo of damage under 20KM (with iridium and TII 125MM's 20KM is an easy mark to hit). If the target can be locked down by the 20KM scrambler, there is a good chance the inty or faster AF next to you can nail it with it's web and so on.
Possibly the best thing about the enyo, is that it doesn't rely on drones, meaning it (of the two Gal AF's), the easiest to keep alive, and manage. Youdon't have to debate the option of leaving behind 5TII drones or risk losing both your drones and your ship every time your in trouble... If you get into a sticky spot, at most you have 1 TII drone sitting out there defenseless, which is much much easier to leave behind. This means mobility is one of your strong points.
The Harpy however IMHO tends to do the above just just as well if not better, it has the range, and mid slot advantage.
The Ishkur on the other hand, is a great small group/solo skirmish ship, and can with proper drone skills, outdamage the Enyo. It has a much more versital slot combination, and there are a number of excellent fittings possible, each with it's own pro and con.
From the heavy tank Noshkur (think Dominix but on a frigate scale), To the heavy damage Blastishkur, to the 125MM Ishkur of frigate swatting, and many possibilities in between.
The major flaw withthe ishkur is two fold: first, anything below a cruiser knows your a very dangerous ship to really go toe to toe with, which means at best you get no fights, and at worst, they specialy fit you beat you. The plated Noshkur is predictable at best... outranged at worst. And it's reliance on drones means more to think about durring each fight, and more to think about when you are in trouble.
Galaxion > If you drove a car shaped like a thorax women would call you Demangel > Dude... I would call.. Demangel > wait that sounded g@y I bet. Galaxion > Just a bit.
