I see in the EULA that two accounts are permitted with two licenses. With that in mind, I have a few questions:
1. Does purchasing an EVE Subscription on eveonline.com and then purchasing the game from Steam count as buying two licenses? 2. If so, must I install the Steam client in order to access the second account? Are there any restrictions to which account can be logged into from which client?
I know a lot of games have strict multi-account policies, so I don't want to end up on the wrong side of some obscure rule. =-/ |

License = monthly subscription. If for some weird reason you wish to do so, you can buy one subscription from eveonline.com and one from Steam, but you won't get around paying for two monthly subscriptions. (If you buy the game on Steam, you are also signing up for a subscription on Steam.)
There's no need to be afraid of an obscure rule - if the games lets you log in, it's because the account is paid for and everything is fine. |

1. Yup, you can have 10 accounts and the game itself is free, do not pay for it! You only pay for your subscription. 2. You can play EVE without having your steam client running if you download the game through Eve online website. Reopen the EVE gate so we can invade Serenity. Goons can go first. |

Thanks. The reason is that I'm just starting out, and Eve just came up for 2 bucks for a month on Steam, so I figured it'd be a good opportunity to try two different playstyles early on (I know you can unlock a second character's training with Plex, but $2 for a month is dirt cheap). |

Why pay 2 bucks for it if you can do it free through a buddy trial? Your main would even get a free plex if you decide to sub the second account. That offer would have you paying for a second account right from the bat and before you even know what you are doing :). BTW, you will soon notice that getting anything done in EVE takes time. You wouldn't really be trying a totally different playing style on a new toon even with the second account. It takes an investment in time to skill out a path, make the isk, gain the experience etc.

+1 for the buddy invite. I always try to avoid steam whenever possible. Saving 8 dollars or so isn't worth going through the hassle. And the buddy invite deal is quite good in itself (free month basically).
I disagree with the second part though. Having a second character allows you to start specializing one while the other tries out many things. Then you get the "new player" freedom to try stuff out while still "getting things done" (ie making a beeline for good weapon skills and tank). I did it that way and it worked out nicely. www.ensignyooch.wordpress.com

It really doesn't matter which way you do it. The Buddy trial provides a little more gametime, at the price of an increased 'license fee' when you activate the account. The $2 steam account precludes the $10 'license fee', but does not come with the 21 days of 'free trial time'.
The added bonus to use the buddy trial is the rewards (like a 'free plex') but make sure you read the terms carefully. PLEX is not available as a reward to those who activate with PLEX, for example. If you did get the $2 steam version you can just use that version to log into both accounts, it's what I do. I bought Eve again for around $5 as I like steam, I have too many games to keep track of otherwise (if you don't like steam I understand, to each their own and lets leave it at that). But just know it will automatically want to log you into your steam Eve account and you have to hit "switch accounts" or whatever it's called to use your non-steam account and if it's not default already switch off the option to automatically shut off the launcher when you launch Eve this way you can play both your steam and non steam Eve account at the same time.
Short version same hassle you have to deal with non steam version in the launcher, only added headache is it wants to you play your steam account. Oh and it seems steam doesn't really do the automatic updates for Eve like most of the other games you have to launch Eve launcher to update, it was a big disappointment when I found that out. On the plus side you can backup Eve to install latter saving yourself a huge download (especially if you have a slow internet connection like me).
Lastly I hope you bought it as I can tell you I made $2 easily from selling the trading cards and I think 100-400mil I can't remember exactly from selling the implant they gave you in the starter pack. Welcome to Eve. Everyone here is an Evil Sick Sadistic Bastard who is out to get you. Anyone who tells you otherwise is either trying to scam you or use you. |
