My wife, who does not play mmpogs of any sort, amused me with her innocent comment of 'wow a lot of girls play that game' the other day and it got me thinking.
Now cross dressing and the MMPOG community have a long history. Since the first guy figured out that 18 year old (internet was only available at the University level then) nerds would give 'female' MUD characters things just so they could think a girl out there somewhere liked them, cross dressing was not only for those with sexual identity problems but a mmpog profession as well.
Now in some games this is still alive and well as can be seen here but the sheer number of 'females' in eve has me a bit puzzled, this doesn't seem to be a game that lends itself to 'favors' like most mmpogs.
This isn't meant to be a flame post, most are happily on vent/ts not trying to hide that they are in fact not female (though whenever you have a female character who just can't seem to get her mic to work, it is always someone who claimed to be a 'real' female I assume hoping for toys from boys.) I've also played female toons myself playing DAOC as if you tried to play a male lurkeen you would know how painful they were to watch run or the awful noise they made when they got hit.
So I ask the males with female avatars throng out there, what was your motivation?

Edited by: Donna Divine on 10/03/2006 14:24:48 Dunno, I found the gallente male ugly so I made a female.
I mean, civire and gallente males for example are so overplayed that getting anything even resembling a somewhat unique look is improbable.
It certainly has little to do with getting freebies or wooing 18 year olds. Eve knows no freebies, and I know no 18 year olds to be impressed. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Edited by: Dekiri on 10/03/2006 14:36:18 It is really that easy. You have to ask yourself a question. What is more wierd or abnormal? - Staring at a guy all day - Staring at a girl all day
I for one prefer looking at a pretty girl and not at a guy tbh. In other mmorpgs its even more obvious because you actually stare at a male or female butt for the most time =P

It depends on the type of MMO. IF it's one where you are actually roleplaying and have a attachment to the character beyond it's what you look at while you wack at 10000 pink bunnies then I play males, but If it's just a backside I have to look at then I'd rather look at a girl most of the time.
Got 2 male mains in EVE, but als 3 female alts that I just made to play with the face builder and see just what I could do. ~{When evil and strange get together anything is possible}~ A tool is only useless when you don't know how to use it. - ActiveX The grass is always greener on the other side. - JoCool |

I think some people read far too much into some things.
Most people choose an avatar becuase they like the look of it ingame. The idea of their ingame characters gendre having any bearing on their rl gendre probably isn't given any thought by most except by those insecure enough in themselves to think it matters.
For the record, I've got one male character, 1 female character. Read somthing into that if you want.

If I don't know you, you're a she if you got a female character. And a he if it's male. So for me it does matter. ( and most I do know I still give em the gender they picked when making their character ) ~{When evil and strange get together anything is possible}~ A tool is only useless when you don't know how to use it. - ActiveX The grass is always greener on the other side. - JoCool |

I've always thought that the female portraits looked like they'd had more effort put into them than the male ones (by the devs I mean, not the players). Amarr males look constipated, Caldari males either have enormous chins or are utterly featureless, Gallente males look - there's no other word for it - camp (Intakis not so much) - Brutor men look like trolls and Sebestior men just have weirdly-shaped heads.
Aside from the odd silly headwear (looking at you, Amarr), the ladies all look a lot better.
I suppose it only really matters if you role play. Lyra was named after I'd read through the His Dark Materials trilogy and couldn't really be a male character now, could she? :)

I'm a lemming. Everyone else was doing it.
Actually, it's just that this was the first MMO where I don't see a char running around, so there was no reason NOT to make a female char.
Funny story. Another MMO. We had a player join our Group. She was becomeing good friends with one of our male members. TOO good of friends. The Guy was sorta getting a crush on her. Well, when we finally got her to get on vent, she sounded like a ... well.. a teenage boy trying REALLY hard to sound like a girl.
Our infatuated male friend kept up for the whold day that "There must be somethign wrong with her settings."
The "Girl" kept it up for a few hours. "she" was in private communication with one of our leaders letting us know it was all in good fun.
Thing is, this was the funnies thing in the world to those of us listening. Our love stuck guy tried for an hour to help his "female" friend get "her" settings right.
All the while the rest of us where dieing from laughter, communication with wispers back and forth on vent .
About a month later our love struck guy left the game for RL reasons. But the "girl"(Real name of Kyle) is still a strong member over a year later. He's just a early 20's guy who's into makeing people laugh.
it's a classic in our SG.
So from now on, when ever we talk about a Male pretending to be female, ESPECIALLY on vent/ts, we call it pulling a Kyle. :)

When i created my character, the only thing that crossed my mind was "do you want to look at a guy or a hot girl when you're playing?" and the answer was pretty obvious to me. Too bad i didn't think that I'll be called antoinette on ts which is still quite weird. -.-

i play characters of a different gender than myself for the same reason an author includes characters of not his gender in a book.
I am already playing a square-jawed, cybernetically enhanced pod-pilot from 20,000 years in the future... and its the gender that's the odd part?
This would come up in WoW as well, where i think gender roles are even more inconsequential. You're playing an anthropromophic, talking, magic casting COW (or elf, or troll or.. ad naseum). It would seem that the gender of this magical cow would be the LEAST "odd" thing about the players decision.
This is a Role-Playing game. I am playing a role. if the role that i create is female, it is female. Do you think authors of books get funny looks when they type out the dialogue of a female character in thier novel?

You're confusing. You say this isn't a flame yet call males who have a female avatar cross dressers and claim they have sexual identity problems? Very strange since that would include you as well. I've played eq2, wow, coh and a few other mmorpg's and in all those I had roughly as many male as female avatars (I'm male). The only thing keeping me from making a female avatar in EVE is that it would feel dumb to have one while chatting on teamspeak. I have two reasons for wanting to make a female avatar.
One: I'm a pen and pencil roleplayer and playing a female character is a fun challenge to undertake once in a while.
Two: Female avatars tend to have higher quality than male ones. I rather look at a pretty avatar than an ugly one. And if I'm going to play a mmorpg for several years I'd rather look at a female character than a male one.
The people who claim that ones avatar and playstyle reflects ones RL identity have been smoking too much *****. I'm not a space pilot, I don't kill thousands of innocent crew members every day, I don't trade in minerals and while I DO have more than 3 in charisma I have less than 12 intelligence

The last place I thought this weekly thread would pop up would be the Eve boards. You're playing a ship more than your character really. My main is a femlae and I see her as just a character and not an extension of myself. Like if I were playing Tomb Raider, I don't feel like I'm Lara Croft. What I find more odd is somebody developing a crush on an ingame character.

I play a male character. This is because I like to roleplay, and ... well I find I really can't roleplay a character of a different gender.
I have alts that are female, because those I don't tend to roleplay, and they're easier on the eyes.
I don't mind too much either way. My only real consideration is that if you're wanting to RP, and you can't do a female character, then don't play one :). -- We are recruiting

I'm a gg (genuine girl) with a female avatar. I started playing just after this acme out of beta, and a LOT of "favors" got passed around. "OMG ur a grrl?" and I would instantly have another 50K ISK in my wallet. Because of the crossing genders, this has really gone out of style, so now it's more of a "Omg ur a REAL girl?", to which most ppl are suspicious until they hear my voice.
Although, now that I think about it, I have a deeper voice than most girls, so ppl STILL think that I'm a 13yo boy masquerading. <sigh> __________________________________________________ God gave men two heads but only enough blood to run one. |

Same here... I like to Roleplay, but more importantly I like to see a mirror of myself in the universe I am playing... So try to create a character that resembles myself, attributes and looks mostly but since we pick the skills "we" want I guess that too...
Heck I remember changing my hair style because of a character, I know it sounds a little weird, but the character looked so much like me except the hair that, I decided to give it a try and no corn rows dont look good on a white dude...
