Right now and for the past 2.5 years i have been running eve on a dell dimension 4600 with a pentium 4 2.4 Ghz processor and 512 Mb RAM. Its also got Nvidia GeForce FX 5200. Now the monitor is an old ass Gateway ev500 from my computer that i got about 6 years ago.
My monitor i will definitly upgrade. I would like to know opinions on the best flatscreen monitor i could get that would allow me to run 2 chars on same monitor smoothly and with fairly high resolution. I would like to not spend more than 500 US dollars on it if possible.
Also another couple of tech question...do I have enough RAM? Would upgrading my video card allow me to run 2 chars on one screen more smoothly? if so what video card would people suggest? Would buying a new computer be a better option? Are there such things as high performance network cards?
My game runs fairly smoothly but the resolution isn't that great and it seems like it could run a lot better. Thank you in advance for your help.

Monitor won't help your performance, and it's all in the RAM tbh, get atleast 512 more

This is an awesome monitor: NEC 1970GX
It has an 8ms response time (faster than many CRTs), an extremely high contrast ratio, and a beautiful, glossy finish. My wife has a dual monitor setup with them and I have one as my main monitor (with another hand-me-down lcd).

Some food for thought: Consider looking into a new pc (even if its a little bit on the low budget gamer side). Make some space and park both monitors on your desk. If need be, set the mouse to left handed control for the pc on the left. Down the road, plan on adding ram and maybe a fx5700 or better geforce card(whatever u can get for dirt-cheap) to spruce up the old pc.
It may sound a bit extreme, but if you want to be able to fight with two ships at once, two pc's is the safest bet to avoid the framerate hit and potential sound problems that can occur on a single pc running multiple instances of the game.
Granted, not everyone runs into sound problems(popping/slowdown), but when running 2 windows, the active window gets good framerate, and the inactive window gets about 1/2 of that framerate, wich means little details like current sheild strength don't update very quickly at all for the ship in the inactive window.
As a point of reference, with a single client running in full screen mode at 1024X768, i get about 200 fps in station with just the chat window open. In space it's about 80 fps. With a single client in window mode, its about 170 fps in station, 70 in space.
With 2 clients running in 1024X768 windows on a 2048X768 desktop, the active window runs around 65 fps in station, 45 fps in space. The inactive window runs around 35 in station, 25 in space.
When things get even slightly busy, the inactive window drops to around 10 fps or less, which is pretty aweful if anything happens to be shooting at it.
Thats just my 2 cents though, as with anything, your mileage may vary |

I'd suggest the following monitor to solve your problem;
Sony GDMFW900 24" CRT Monitor
http://www.superwarehouse.com/Sony_GDMFW900_24_CRT_Monitor/GDMFW900/p/105660
The key features are, its 24" and Maximum Resolution: 2304 x 1440 / 80 Hz
Its not made anymore, but reconditioned models seem to appear occasionally around the $500 mark.
After checking on ebay, this company has previously sold some used models at $150 odd each in US;

Remember also, if you buy a large monitor, to get the correct hemosphere model ;-)

If you're going to upgrade:
Processor: Athlon 64. If you play two EVE clients, get a dual core. RAM: 512MB is enough for one client if you don't memory leak, but even then I'd get an extra 512MB to make sure (1GB total) Graphics card: FX5200 sucks. But EVE doesn't use much graphics card power. A 6600GT is a good deal.

definetly i would go with new mobo supports pci-x and two nvidia cards in it i would then dual screen one on each card 2 gig of ram if running two clients at same time and also the dual core chip set up on a fresh install of xp pro to runn in dual channel mode a little hit on proformance when running a single client but if you do the full copy method and have two installs of eve on the machine they should run as two seperate processes and be split up so it will look like two machines in one this should give you a pretty good FPS on each client in eve.
This is my opinion its also like armpits and butt holes both stink at times but can be cleaned up.

Get 2 Budget LCD's.
The Acer AL1916w is a nice 19" wide Screen LCD. it only goes up to a res of 1440x900, but if you have two, you can put one game window on one, and another game window on the other.
The colors are very nice. I found the contrast is more then enough. No ghosting.
they run for about 300-320$ Canadian. So about 250-300 US.
You might be able to get 2 for the amount you were talking about.
As long as your video card has dual monitor outputs(Analog for this monitor) and can pump out that performance, you're golden. i'd recomend a nVidia 6800GT or higher for this.
then theres no alt tabing. Just slide the mouse back and forth.
