Edited by: Levicus on 14/03/2006 06:23:58 I wanted to post this in the hopes the newer pirates out there could find it useful as I outline some of the mistakes I made.
So there I was, trolling through high-sec outfitting a new Rifter after losing my last one to an Angel spawn (oh, the embarrassment! ) when I think to myself "Hey, I've got an hour to kill before I need to be anywhere, let's go hunting somewhere new for a change!".
A few clicks on the map later and voila, a nice little clump of 0.3 systems with a whole lot of people in it. "YARGH!" I think. Hit autopilot and away we go. Troll though a bunch of the systems but don't find anything overly ripe for the taking (a common occurrence in a solo Rifter). Eventually I wander into a deadend system that has around 30 ppl. in local chat.
Mistake #1: Never go to a deadend system. I made this mistake before and got to play tag with an AP group consisting of an Apoc and a bunch of other support ships. (Hi Global Bullets!)
So I start bopping around and eventually find a lone Exequror. Jump, scramble, get him into armor and open a convo to see if he wants to ransom. He decides to block me instead. Fine, be that way :) Pretty explosion, pretty can, nice loot (paid for my whole setup), the whole 9 yards. Warp out to a safespot and start checking the market on my loot when I suddenly see someone chat over local (sorry, forgot your name):
him: "You shouldn't have done that Levicus" him: "We don't like pirates here" me: "Did I happen to wander into claimed lands?" him: "This is safe space. You arn't leaving here alive."
Mistake #2: Always check the info on everyone in local before you start pillaging. This is something I always do, but let slip this one time because I was just out for a quick hunt and let myself get lazy. A quick scan of local shows that probably 20 of those 30 people all belong to the same Red Dwarf mining corp.
So, in comes that sinking feeling we all know so well... gate camping! Jump to the planet near the gate and a quick scan shows a Megathorn and some other Very Big Ship.
Mistake #3: If you have to go into a deadend system, for godsake make an insta so you can get out if things go ugly.
Well crap, this isn't good. Some light banter over local and I decide to hit a local station and let the heat die down.
Fast forward a few hours and I decide to pop back on and see what the system looks like. I'm not even out of the station before I get a convo (Grafix maybe?) asking if I feel like a trapped rat. More good-natured banter ensues and they offer me safe passage out of the system if I apologize in local and promise never to return. I thank them for the offer but politely decline, as I'm not in the most trusting of moods at the moment (hazard of the profession). Back at the gate I find a new crop of BSs and the coup de gras... a Machariel.
****.
On top of that someone with a very low sec rating shows up in a Vexor and start showing up at all the planets I'm hoping between. I have no idea if he was after me or just happened to be there at the same time, but I certainly wasn't going to stick around to find out.
Back to the station and relog. This time wait until it's REALLY late (1am PST) and try again. Still 10 people in local, one of whom was Smeggy, the CEO of said corp. Get out fast and scan the gate. It's clear! Make a break for it and hit autopilot to get me the hell out of that area.
Jump to the other side of the gate and... nothing. My ship disappears but my camera is stuck in the original system. Suddenly I get a convo from Smeggy talking trash and I start to get really worried, since the server knows I'm still logged in but I have no idea where my ship is or what it's doing.

Edited by: Levicus on 14/03/2006 06:23:37 Force-quit EVE and jump back in, finding my self on the other side of the gate. At least I made it out! Auto-warp back to my spot and arrive to find the same guy I killed earlier in the day sitting there in another Exequror. Briefly consider targeting him just to goose 'em but decide against it and just warp to the next gate. Smeggy is in local by this point and starts demanding 35 mil in restitution for attacking his ships.
Warp to the next gate and hey, wouldn't you know it...
It's Smeggy... in a Tempest....
with a friend... in a Wolf...
and they're both flashing yellow...
Now the fun begins. Nothing to do but hit the MWD and start praying
Targeting... Targeting... Jump!
Spend the next 3 systems watching Smeggy get to the gate first and play the ôWhose faster, my mwd or your targeting computer?ö game. Even had him get a shot of something very loud off, but it must have been just a fraction of a second too late since it did no damage right as I jumped. Also got some amusement out of another Red Dwarf pilot broadcasting ô5 million for whoever kills Levicus!ö in local.
Eventually he realizes I'm not going to get caught and calls off the chase, having little left to do but make assorted threats over chat. I'll spare you the details on those, they weren't all that inventive and I'm sure you've heard them before :)
And that, my friends, is how I got away with a cargo hold full of good solid mining loot from the Dwarf's den and incidentally had the most fun yet in this game.
Nothing but respect for Smeggy and his crew. They know how to take care of their people and when they get on you, they don't let go.
Good hunting everyone!

Great story. And things like this make me wonder how bored they are if they chase a rifter in battleships. Personally I don't understand it but it's always nice to hear the smacktalk when you manage to escape. -------------------------------------

I wonder how bored pirates are when they kill pods in battleships, and camp gates for hours on end.

A key difference being; profit. Chasing after a rifter in a battleship is simply a waste of time, nevermind the money you would have made in that time.
Good story Lev Woe to stupid mining corps.

Too bad they didnt have an interdictor or a bubble and too bad they cant be used in lowsec. Seriously man, what were you thinking not making insta for that system and that area??
As for the corp, they went about it completely the wrong way. If you had instas you would have been quasi invulnerable to them. I keep telling these industrialists how to get pirates but they dont listen I suppose ... sigh. The way to get you is with a belt trap. =)

Very nice Levicus. What system was this? Sounds like Isenan. Dead end system...part of a small cluster of low sec...Always a good number of people there...Almost always has some Haine Foundation there.

Lol, had to reply to this one. I'm sure I know which system it is cause I got stuck there myself a while ago. I was cruising around in my Vexor looking for trouble and made the same mistake - I forgot to notice that they were all in the same corp. I caught one of their guys in ratting in a Thorax. Locked him down, attempted to ransom but he stalled and called in backup. I realised just in time to pop him and get out, but they did the same and camped the one gate out (at that point I realised I'd backed myself into a corner).
Hehe, Red Dwarf Mining Corp really do take it seriously. A 10 mil bounty was offered in local for my corpse! I had to log out at a safe spot in the end and escape a few hours later once they'd calmed down. Congratulations on getting another of their ships in their 'safe' system though

Briliant story, and glad to hear you made it out with your ship. We've had some determined people hunting us as well, excellent way to keep the blood pumping through your veins.

Quote: And things like this make me wonder how bored they are if they chase a rifter in battleships.
The main reason is deterrance - if they can stop people profiting from privateering them, then the hope is that they won't bother to come back. Potentially flawed reasoning, as there are more people who fight for fun than fight for profit, and stiff opposition makes them more likely to come back. Having said that, though, boredom would certainly be a factor though.
Good tale though. |

Its actually idiocy for 2 reasons.
1) You cant catch a rifter with battleships across stargates. A BS cant lock them fast enough to stop them.
2) You dont need a BS to kill a rifter. All they needed were tech 1 frigs ready to fly in their hangar and when he showed in local they could have been ready to counter gank him in under a minute.
They blew it. The moment he got out of that belt alive, he got away. -- Rells

Well, they had a Wolf hunting that Rifter. It's no inty, but otherwise perfectly suitable for kicking ass in that particular situation. I am guessing the BB was there mostly to show flag and in case the Rifter whistles up some friends.

Right. Because running the scanner on the nearbye locations and checking local is a rare and difficult feat. To make matters even simpler, it isn't difficult to tell your corp scouts to run a check on the neighboring gates.
To avoid belt traps, follow the simple process of:
1. Scan his position. Is he in a belt? If so, are there NPCs? No NPCs or cargo cans near him? Belt trap.
2. Run a local check of corpmates and send a corp scout to the neighboring systems. Cheap shuttle will do it. Gates packed? Belt/local trap. Corpmates in local that are not docked? Belt trap.
3. Time to engage and you warp on top. Was he even moving or was he stationary? If stationary, it's a belt trap. Run a check on his guns, is he using short range so that you could keep far away from him but still enough to warp away after you spring the trap?
Belt traps tactics catch only rookie pirates, just like what you are training your classes protect you against rookie pvpers. --------------

Great story. Some of the best fun you can have in EVE is while being chased.
My favorite chase story was going into Syndicate in a probe to pick up some loot... I ended up with a small inty pack on my tail on the way out, with no instas .
I used a nice trick to fool them:
1. There were two gates around the same planet. One they were camping (went to System A), the next went to another system (System B), which then had a gate to System A. 2. I warped to the gate to System B and gated, but they didn't realize I had gone that way. They most likely expected that I went back the way I came or logged. 3. I went to System A, and then flew out through M-6. I'm free!

I'm currerntly doin the same thing in the Chamume system. Only 1 gate, 4-5 stations and a bunch of belts, all of it patrolled by an anti-pirate corp.
Things getting hairy but I intend to stick around since I am getting good hunt and nice loot :)
Really nice story, OP

So where was this system again

I got lazy, simple as that :) It was only supposed to be a quick run while I was killing time before my girl showed up so I wasn't concentrating as well as I should have.

Can't remember the name, but I think it started with an 'H'. It was about 10 jumps east of Amamake, near the Rens hub. I'll look it up later tonight and post it for anyone interested.

Lol what you call a mistake seems like a REALLY fun time to me :)
Logging out though, nah, ya gotta stay and let the excitement build. I might be in a different financial situation than you were at that point though, so I can't fault you for logging.
Damn, I can't wait till I get a few more levels in the basic skills together :) heheh |

Oh Levicus...We only chased you in BS cause thats what we were in at the moment you logged back in, otherwise you woulda had inty and AF all over your arse ;-) and even if we didnt catch ya, you got the crap scared outa ya, made you log for several hours ruining your pirating fun for the evening thus saving countless other miners.
The Dwarves don't forgive or forget...one day i will have your corpse in my hanger doing nasty things to a Flameburst missile next to all the other little pirates corpses ;-)
(and for those who mentioned it, we do use bait mining ships, and enjoy watching the pirates windows turn brown as the little miner grows fangs, tackles him and the rest of the crew shows up to enjoy the fun, so ya never know if that cruiser or barge is waiting for you)
See you soon Lev,

I agree. I don't think the situation as a whole was a mistake (I did get away with some nice loot after all), I just happened to make a bunch of beginner mistakes in the process and wanted to point them out for others to learn from. I've got a long way to go with this guy before I can do anything other than run at the first sign of trouble, seeing as 90% of my 500k sp are in learning :)
I wasn't happy about logging in the station(seemed like a cheap way out), but the combination of RL commitments and the fact that I was completely and utterly out classed didn't leave much choice.

It certainly wouldn't be the first corpse I've left behind :) I think Global Bullets might have one after I challenged his Apoc to a duel with my reaper.
Almost had 'em too
