7 mil skillpoints in gunnery covers all 'generic' skills at l.5, as well as small, medium and large turret of choice to l.5 and relevant specializations at l.4 ... the end amount of skillpoints is 7.3 mil or so.
You can skip these with Caldari, yes... but then you will want the equivalent in missiles: all 'generic' missile skills at l.5, rockets, standards, heavies and torpedoes at l.5 and specializations at l.4 (since you talk of progression rather than training straight into Raven or something similar)
the total amount of skillpoints needed for that set of skills is ... 7.5 mil. And note, it doesn't even include cruise missiles --the highest rank as far as missiles go-- at all. No defenders and FoF as well.
So, Caldari who completely skips the gunnery in favour of missiles comes merely even with someone who does train the gunnery all the way. Try to cover both, and you are looking at 2x the amount of sp someone who does just the gunnery would need.
Just to point out the "easy mode" for Caldari as far as skillpoints go ended somewhere around Exodus patch... it's just going to take time for opinion of general public to catch up with that concept -.^
I agree to some extent. Caldari do have equally as large a skill tree to cover missile wise now in comparison to gunnery, but I think a crucial point you didn't touch upon is that a caldari pilot can be dramatically more effective, even in larger ships, with a lower amount of skillpoints invested.
Yes, eventually you will want to train all, or a large majority, of the skill tree which will take a similar amount of time as training for gunnery, but definitely caldari ships seem to be far more efficient with lower amounts of sp.
So, perhaps they still are the easy-to-get-into race, just now for different reasons than pre-exodus.
