This is a DDoS Distribuited Denial of Service. There is almost nothing you can do with security equipment inside your data centre to defend against it. According to my information the server has been fine the whole time, it's the network links TO the server that are being melted by external bad guys.

They're doing all they can, and I hope that the poor server dudes don't end up seeing in the new year at work.

I don't know much about how this kind of thing happens. I would be grateful if someone, preferably someone who actually knows something about computers and the internet rather than speculative rubbish, could answer the following questions for me? I'm interested to know.

 1. Why can't these people be traced/arrested?

 2. These people clearly crave attention: why has Twitter not shut down their Twitter account/been forced to shut it down? It's there for everyone to see for christ sake and they've been posting for ages on it.

DDoS is basically a denial of service attack.

Tranquillity has a static ip# which we all connect to, kind of like a telephone number. As you play the game small amounts of data bounce back and forth between you and the server.

When someone DDoS's something they spam the ip# of the server with a large amount of data which it has problems processing, which in turn stops other "packets" from getting through. This ultimately stops everyone from connecting.

Semi drunk think that makes sense

Think of it like a party, and there suddenly is a whole load of people banging on the door going "Hai, can I come in?", and you have to check the ID of everyone who goes in, and they can only go in a few people at a time.
This would soon overwhelm your poor doorman, and you would end up with one of those parties like you read about in the paper, where 500000000000 people suddenly crash a party cos someone put it on public facebook, or, if your doorman is smart, he will just close the door and let no one in. This affects both genuine partygoers and the gatecrashers.

My understanding is that someone has already traced them and publicly posted all their details. So they have been traced.

 Thanks
Shutting it down wouldn't accomplish anything beyond telling them that the police are definitely interested.

Leaving it up gives them more time to say something that makes things worse for them.

So, is there anything CCP can do to defend against this attack, or do we all have to hope derp just stops out of kindness? If the attack continues indefinitely, aren't we all offline indefinitely?

Lets say that you're the main telephone operator for some business and you're in charge of all the incoming and outgoing stuff for that company keeping in touch with all your customers. Suddenly you start getting prank calls asking you for all kinds of silly nonsense which, given your job, you're forced to try and fulfil. The prank calls just keep coming, you may have 2 lines, or 5, or a 100 but no matter how many you have they're all used for those prank calls.

You just can't cope with the time wasted on taking the call and doing what is asked, at some point you might realise they're mostly prank calls and you'll recognise one the second you pick up the phone so you're shielding them off a bit but it still means all lines are busy and you're in hell.

The business itself runs just fine simply because they're not in contact with the customers, but you're fcked. You can't can't take a call and you can make a call. outside connections are effectively severed till the prank calls stop.

they are hard to trace because of internet cafe's free wifi etc. They can also crack random peoples wife's and sit outside in a car if they are really sneaky. There are also IP disguising programs which makes it harder.

Twitter may not be aware, or might of been asked to keep it open as a way to trace the active IP# they are using at the time to post on twitter

Falcon...I'm a miner. I stay out in the field until I get tried. When the server went down, I had 4hours worth of ore stored for transport. Due to the volatile nature of my temp storage in space - it is necessary to monitor closely, in which I could not do.
Request compensation of my lost, please. Oh....and Happy New Year back at ya!

In the US, denial-of-service attacks will be considered a federal crime under the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act with penalties that include years of imprisonment

ThePolice and Justice Act 2006, the United Kingdom specifically outlawed denial-of-service attacks and set a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison
