Hey guys,
Apologies for the unscheduled downtime that Tranquility is experiencing tonight.
Our services have been the target of a DDoS attack this evening, and we're currently working on rectifying the situation and making sure that everything comes back online okay.
We apologize for the interruption in service, and we hope to have things back online soon.
Thanks for your patience.
UPDATES:
22:15 - 31/12/2013 - Work in progress. No ETA for service to be fully restored at this time. 23:00 - 31/12/2013 - Services are back online, and Tranquility is now accepting connections.

As I usually request when these things happen... please don't compensate us. That just encourages these chuckleheads to keep doing it, everytime some immature basement-dweller decides he wants an extra 50,000 SP. That moment when you realize the crazy lady with all the cats was right... |

What did you do wrong this year to be the one locked in the office trying to stop the servers melting while everyone else is drunk and at parties? I feel bad for you, I remember being in the same position :-(

I lost a ship during this as well, and was able to start an ingame ticket through the help menu. But reading this post here I see the Dev posted a support ticket link to the website. Not wanting to put in 2 tickets for the same issue, which is the preferred method?
Leave my ingame ticket going, or re-submit a ticket through the link the Dev posted here for the website?
And also....thanks for the work that goes into all of this, too bad a few people have ruin everyones fun. Thanks for the updates as well. |

This is a DDoS Distribuited Denial of Service. There is almost nothing you can do with security equipment inside your data centre to defend against it. According to my information the server has been fine the whole time, it's the network links TO the server that are being melted by external bad guys.
They're doing all they can, and I hope that the poor server dudes don't end up seeing in the new year at work. Inappropriate signature added.-á CCP Notarealdev. |

1. Why can't these people be traced/arrested?
2. These people clearly crave attention: why has Twitter not shut down their Twitter account/been forced to shut it down? It's there for everyone to see for christ sake and they've been posting for ages on it.

DDoS is basically a denial of service attack.
Tranquillity has a static ip# which we all connect to, kind of like a telephone number. As you play the game small amounts of data bounce back and forth between you and the server.
When someone DDoS's something they spam the ip# of the server with a large amount of data which it has problems processing, which in turn stops other "packets" from getting through. This ultimately stops everyone from connecting.

Think of it like a party, and there suddenly is a whole load of people banging on the door going "Hai, can I come in?", and you have to check the ID of everyone who goes in, and they can only go in a few people at a time. This would soon overwhelm your poor doorman, and you would end up with one of those parties like you read about in the paper, where 500000000000 people suddenly crash a party cos someone put it on public facebook, or, if your doorman is smart, he will just close the door and let no one in. This affects both genuine partygoers and the gatecrashers.

Lets say that you're the main telephone operator for some business and you're in charge of all the incoming and outgoing stuff for that company keeping in touch with all your customers. Suddenly you start getting prank calls asking you for all kinds of silly nonsense which, given your job, you're forced to try and fulfil. The prank calls just keep coming, you may have 2 lines, or 5, or a 100 but no matter how many you have they're all used for those prank calls.
You just can't cope with the time wasted on taking the call and doing what is asked, at some point you might realise they're mostly prank calls and you'll recognise one the second you pick up the phone so you're shielding them off a bit but it still means all lines are busy and you're in hell.
The business itself runs just fine simply because they're not in contact with the customers, but you're fcked. You can't can't take a call and you can make a call. outside connections are effectively severed till the prank calls stop. |

they are hard to trace because of internet cafe's free wifi etc. They can also crack random peoples wife's and sit outside in a car if they are really sneaky. There are also IP disguising programs which makes it harder.
Twitter may not be aware, or might of been asked to keep it open as a way to trace the active IP# they are using at the time to post on twitter |

I'm an independent security analyst and it is very difficult to "trace" someone who performs a DDoS attack, indeed, it's quite difficult to trace any hacker unless they get sloppy. Here's why.
The first D in DDoS stands for Distributed. A "Distributed Denial of Service". To explain this simply, a botnet or zombienet of infected computers all around the world sit and wait for instructions from a single command and control machine. They are given a target and then they attack. These are often personal private pc users and laptop owners who have no idea their machine is infected to begin with, so assuming that the thousands of IP addresses sending malicious traffic are the actual addresses of the hacker(s) is completely incorrect. "Distributed" means it's coming from everywhere all at once, and not directly from the hacker's command box.
It *might* be possible to trace where the command instructions came from IF an investigator's box is infected with that particular zombienet ID and recorded the incoming command instruction. Unfortunately, even that is no guarantee, as any hacker worth his weight in dogcrap will send the signal through a logless proxy chain, making "tracing" virtually impossible.
There is little that can be done against DDoS in conventional means from within the organization, especially with the way that MMO server farm infrastructure is arranged. Usually, it is the service provider which must attempt to handle the problem. Sometimes, networks will route traffic over redundant links to mitigate some of the trouble, and often, the border routers can be reconfigured with information gained from packet sniffers. A security analyst should be able to get a good idea of the attack characteristics and write a detection rule that can be applied to security devices to help mitigate the attack.
Probably the best out there, but sometimes expensive, is a method called Customer Triggered Blackholing. What this does is combines Intrusion Detection algorithms with automated scripting to detect the attacking IPs and "blackhole" them by rerouting them dynamically to a non-existent IP - making the routers on the hop ignore and drop the packets instead of pass the traffic on. |

I had the same issue, and couldn't even log into the forum. Flushing DNS didn't help (I assumed they got around the DDoS by re-directing or changing the IP of the login server), but that didn't fix it. For some reason it worked after a reboot though. Go figure.

If I try and login from the launcher I get an error 101 and a super long URL link.
If I try and bypass the launcher by utilizing the execution file in my eve folder I can get to the character selection screen and select a character but as soon as I see the eve mail notification I immediately get "lost connection to socket"and thrown back to desktop or back to the bypass login screen.
I have tried the repair tool, restarting all of my equipment, checked the firewalls and as far as I can tell nothing wrong on my end. So I wonder if it has something to do with the earlier ddos attack. Because everything was working fine yesterday.

For those experiencing connection difficulties:
The reason you're unable to connect is likely due to DDoS mitigation techniques used by CCP's upstream network service provider. A DDoS is defined as sending extremely large quantities of garbage to a destination but, fortunately, said garbage is very easy to detect if you look for the right pattern (ESPECIALLY the application these "hackers" used). The challenge is what is to be done once said pattern is detected, and the only thing really an NSP can do is add a simple rule that says "WHEN IP = [range] THEN Forward traffic to 0.0.0.0" which tells the high-speed router to simply discard said traffic when the IP matches. Generally a separate machine will "sniff" some of the traffic moving through and tell the router to add rules matching those garbage characteristics, but there is lag time as the analyzer can only handle so much traffic.
Quite often traffic will come from similar IPs such as 40.40.40.1 and 40.40.40.10 so the software, detecting this, in the interest of speed, will just add one rule to match the range instead of 10 rules matching each. A lot of times entire business networks can be compromised, so this is often the case, more so than residential connections, so as a network analyst is is common to see floods coming from 200,300,500 consecutive IPs.
What this means for you is you may have issues for another few hours, until this garbage traffic from similar and close IPs ceases. I've heard that the FBI did countermand the botnets' command and control network (cutting the head off the chicken so to speak), meaning it shouldn't be much longer until the straggler machines still flooding CCPs servers withouut instructions from thhe C&C network stop sending garbage (when Granny's comp is restarted for example).
If you're handy with computers, you could try and force a release/renew on your router to try and mitigate this. This generally will give you a new IP. DSL customers? Just power-cycle your modem.
New Information
Before doing that, open command prompt inn Administrator mode and type "ipconfig /flushdns"
If this all still fails, go yell at your ISP for cheaping out and breaking Internet conventions on DNS time-to-live. |

I doubt the eve client send the passwword to the server on authetication. It shoudlrpobably send only the hash of the password so that even sniffing that youc annto for example access another CCP system like accoutn page. A DDoS does not penetrate the server in question, the only intention behind it is to cram as much bogus data down CCP's internet connection as it can, with the intent of preventing legitimate access.
Think of your home Internet connection. If you have a few torrents running, you notice your Netflix doesn't work as well if at all. Think of it like this, but on a much larger scale. |

Good luck stealing mine - I specifically use prepaid cards (although if I could buy Game Time Codes in my country I'd use those).
They wouldn't get much after I've extended my account with the best subscription deal, then buy as many PLEX I can with the rest.
As to D-DOS attacks, most of them rely on a "zombie network" of computers to generate the amount of internet traffic required to shut down a system essentially designed to keep running after a nuclear attack.
So, as a general policy, you should encourage everybody you know to keep their virus software up to date and their firewalls on.
A lot of internet service providers and game corporations (cough, So Ney) are unwilling they have been hacked and customer details have been stolen, or make a serious effort to shut down afflicted computers.
International borders make the cost of a trial too much to bother with, even assuming their home country is willing to extradite or deport them. l8r \o/ |
