I've ordered one of those nifty 'gaming keyboards' from Logitech (mainly because of the backlit keys), and apparently it has specialized keys that can run macros. As I understand it, these are just key-press macros, not the sort of super-complex macros people use for AFK mining and such.
So my question is: Are these at all legal? The only macro I can conceive of making using these, as there are so few keyboard shortcuts in EVE, is one to fire all of my weapons simultaneously. This is mostly for cosmetic purposes; I like the idea of a nice coordinated volley, rather than the random spastic firing sequences I tend to get from mashing the F1-Fwhatever keys as quickly as I can. I must say, it's a feature I was surprised NOT to find in EVE.
So can one be banned for using one of these 'gaming keyboards' to fire in volleys? Or is that acceptable?

That's good to know, thanks. I may desire the aesthetic symmetry of a coordinated railgun volley, but not so much that I'm willing to commit account suicide for it.

Do you realize how strange you come off? :P It's your own damn keyboard you paid for!
Also, legal or not, it's not a software macro, it's more like using a cup of coffee to press all the buttons together, so they can't track it anyway.

What's strange about requesting a clarification of the rules so that I do not accidentally violate them and wind up banned as a vile macro-er? If it had turned out that the G15 was illegal, I would either have cancelled the order or simply avoided using the macro keys.
Olsen'Kra, thanks for the link to that other thread.

Actually, there are a few threads at http://www.g15forums.com/ about how WoW DOES allow the G15.
It's all about how the macro's go.
you can't chain macro's in such a way that you can AFK Mine or something. And that is what they are worried about.
I do find it exceptionally usefull to for weapons.
Fire all guns at once. Half/half, pairs, tripples, all guns/no missles, all missles, no guns and so on.
Love it. And if we can get the LCD Display to show some in game info, would be even better.

I saw a picture of the server stat graph on that display - can't remember where though.

CCP ought to sticky that page for all the whingers who think customer support and GM feedback on Eve is poor. I guess this makes you realise how good the interaction between CCP Staff and customers really is. Keep up the good work guys!

Careful of what you say The last time someone mentioned that EVE doesn't have configurable Weapon Profiles, Alpha Strike (or Tab through targets) A Bunch of lamers started flaming the poor guy calling him Lazy and What not. I too am surprised and disappointed as I compare this game to Mechwarrior and I am so used to having different weapon groups and stuff.
While we are on the Same Topic I use a SAITEK Keyboard the has a programmable Pad that attaches to the keyboard (kind of like a separate Numbers keypad). So I can program my Firing Mode, Open Carg/Dronebays, Autopilot and a couple of other functions. It works very well, it has backlit keys and is half the price of the G-15

I use a Nostromo N52 as my F keys are partially obscured, I have a pull out keyboard draw. Anyone trying to use a mouse to click on stuff while lagged knows the importance of keys.

I ended up buying a nice Nostromo n52 Speedpad for my eve hotkeys. I've programed my weapons, autopilot, select-all, scanner, cargo-bay, drone bay, Reload, afterburner, repair and few other things all within reach of my left hand.
It has made combat SOOOOOOO much easier with everything handy.

Edited by: Emmerich Steiner on 15/03/2006 17:43:19 Probably the g15..
You can remap your media keys but all that will do is allow you to map them as let say the "S" key... AFAIK only the g15 and a handfull of others allow you to bind keystrokes.
Though on paper tht nostromo says it can, I haven't played with one yet, so I can say if it does or not. And I think you can get those for like 35 bucks USD.
But I have only seen the g15, and though it is a little pricey I think it is well worth it.
--
Good thing to know that I can use the g15 without fear now :D.. I actaully made my alpha strike macro with random time delays between the buttons to make it look like I was pressing them instead of being a lazy bastard.

I guess some people will try to smite you for anything
Thanks for the advice; I tried a Saitek keyboard, and wasn't as pleased with the ease of typing. As I spend much more time typing than gaming, that's important to me.
Avon... That's a good system. I prefer white mice, myself; akin to Monty Python's 'mouse organ'.

Get a Nostromo. They're like $20 or so.
As an added bonus you get to keep your real keyboard :-)
