EVE is actually my first MMO RPG, but it is not my first MMO. My first MMOs had nothing to do with role playing but total war.
It's hard to say if Shattered Galaxy is an RPG, because it does have RPG elements (leveling) but it seems more like a team based RTS to me. There is never a dull moment in that game. There is always like 32 players in one battle, 16 in each team, and dozens of these battles always going on, fighting to conquer every bit of land. The borders always shift with victory and defeat, and sometimes there are even four way battles.
I left the game because of the ultra-competitiveness and leveling mania.
But this sure is one super aggressive game.
My first ever subscription game was Allegiance, which ultimately became a financial failure and Microsoft shut it down. But it will always be the BEST EVER space combat that ever existed. It's TRIBES on spaceships, but a lot more strategic and complicated. Perhaps its because the game is super hardcore it has only a small player base.
You know what is a cruiser in EVE don't you?
But what is a cruiser in a Allegiance?
It is this big thing you pilot and four other people on the back of your ship handling the turrets.
You and your big ship and teammates, along with escorting bombers and fighters, just emerged out of a wormhole, and are going the enemy team's starbase. And they're coming at you to blow your ship up with fighters and interceptors. Already one or two of your escorting scouts have been blown up by a minefield laid by enemy scouts in the mouth of the wormhole. The pilots in pods were quickly killed in the minefield.
As enemy fighters rake your ship with missiles and lasers, your teammates valiantly pod one fighter after another from the turrets. The distance between your cruiser and the base is lessening, enough to unleash your big missiles at it.
Allegiance is the game that probably invented something you are very familiar in EVE---the pod. The base blows as one, two and three missiles hit it, but the last of the defenders smash his missiles at your hull. When your cruiser blows up, hehe, you got four or five pods for you and your partners. Still it is a job well done, as your pods head for the nearest base. Sometimes a team gets sore and will podkil you.
It's kind of like EVE's Chaos, especially the team deathmatch part, but with much more coordination.
it's quite a while I played this, and I really missed this game. I quit it long ago when troop carriers are just too imbalanced---they enter a base and the base is theirs. The game was flaky and imbalanced, much more flaky than EVE, and balancing was nonexistant.
EVE had much better support. Really.
