One of the things that annoys me most about EVE is the camera distortion. I can't for the life of me think why the designers deliberately chose an in-game camera that distorted everything beyond a small area at the centre of the screen.
It's very easy to fix this so that planets don't become warped and egg-shaped the moment they're not centred (just move the camera back from where it is at any given time and use a much smaller field of view), and so that it doesn't look like you're viewing through a fisheye lens - and for such a pretty game, this sort of thing really holds the visuals back. Could CCP possibly think about removing this incredibly irritating and seemingly pointless 'feature'?

Edited by: Jade Mitch on 16/03/2006 17:22:10 I agree. Stretching the image around the edge reduces the camera's normal field of view as if they're trying to add depth but, that is a bad way to do it. A better way to add depth is to move the camera back and norrowing it's field of view. That would pull the forground in closer and pushing the backgroung out further.
Hollywood does this all the time. They start with a long distance, narrow angled mug shot of an actor and move the camera towards the actor while staying focus. In the scene, the camera seems to stay in one place while the background appears to move up from behind. They do the opposite sometimes too. But, what do I know? Heh

If I remember correctly, your eyes do the same thing. The EVE camera distortion looks totally natural if you focus on the center without so much as glancing to the side. Of course, that doesn't help much, since the interface is all over the place.

Yes this is annoying. It's something thats bothered me from day dot. And no, ones eyes don't do this naturally. Unless you have 'wall-eye' vision like that guy in Hot Shots At least I know my eyes don't do it. But most games have this fish-eye thing to a certain degree. It comes down to the fact that nothing seen through a computer monitor can be truley 3D. It's a 3D engine, but you're only experiencing the game in 2D. What I mean by that is you can never fully remove this effect, but there must be a way to improve the situation from what it is now. On the other hand this effect may just be more noticable in EVE because there isn't a whole lot of scenery besides planets that can be affected by this issue with ingame cameras. And planets being pulled out of shape is probably more noticable than a building for example.
Thats what I think anyway

You don't notice it because your brain compensates for it. The eyes do distort the actual image by a certain amount.

The second most annoying thing about the EVE camera is the constant but suttle rocking motion. They probably did this to enhance the graphics a bit but it also hurts the functionality of the camera by making it hard to zoom in and watch anything from a distance. It also makes people sea-sick after a while .
Please at least make these features adjustable- as in ON/OFF.

Even if that was the case (and I don't know that it is), I really fail to understand the logic of simulating something that is already compensated for by the brain. Besides, IIRC all images received at the optic nerve are actually upsidedown and the brain flips them round so they're right-way-up, does that mean that EVE should be doing that too? Of course not.
Anyway. Is this even on CCP's radar at all? It'd be nice to get some kind of official response over this visual distortion thing.
Also, I thought the rocking motion was the SHIP rocking, not the camera? Could be wrong about that though...
