Basically i was wondering if anyone had any good links comparing the 2, as I have a friend who doesnt quite understand that a mining barge isnt much better than using a battleship or some other ship w/ lots of turrets

A convetor with 3 strips is about 30% more yeild than a ship with 8 mining laser 2's.You can even boost that more with teck 2 strips with mining crystals.
End of story

I have no link, but I can run some numbers for you.
Let's assume you have the skills to fly the better ships in either class. The ones that give bonuses to your mining are:
- Mining: 5% Bonus per level to yield
- Astrogeology: 5% Bonus per level to yield
- Mining Barge: 3% per level to strip miners when in a mining barge
Battlecruiser/Battleship Mining
As a quick example, I shall assume the Brutix or the Megathron, both of which have 7 turret hardpoints. the principle will be the same for both.
1 Miner II gives 60 m3 per cycle, before bonuses:
- 60*1.25*1.25 = 93.75/min (with lvl5 mining and astro)
- 7 Miner II => 93.75*7 = 656 m3/min
Mining Barges
The Covetor, the best tech1 mining barge available can mount 3 strip miners.
A tech 1 strip miner can pull 540 m3/3min un-bonused.
This gives:
- 540*1.25*1.25*1.15 = 970.31 m3/3min with lvl5 mining, astro & barge.
- 970.31*3 gives 2910.93 m3/3min or 970.31 m3/min
considerations
- A BS/BC is much better equipped to survive the rigours of low-sec than a barge.
- A BS/BC will need Co-processors and/or decent electronics skill to mount 7 miner II's
- A BS/BC is likely to need Cap rechargers/boosters for prolonged mining expeditions.
- 3 tech1 strip miners will give you 47% more ore per minute than 7 tech2 mining lasers.
- You will need a barge to mine Ice
- A miner II will let you know quicker when your asteroid is depleted, allowing you to move on. (I hate waiting 3 minutes to be informed 'depleted' and getting 2 omber dumped in my hold. 
I have not given figures for tech 2 strip miners, since it gets a bit more complicated when you have to consider crystals. And I haven't used them yet, so I don't have the figures. I have also not taken account of mining laser upgrades.

There's a sticky at the first page about mining. 
I believe it figured it out like this roughly:
Small Barge -> Mining Frigate -> Mining Cruiser -> Medium Barge (Beats cruisers marginally) -> Battleships -> Large Barge
Thus proving the small barge is a complete waste of time, both skill training wise and what use you can get out of it.

A mining barge is quite a bit better than a battleship but the battleship is still useful in lower security systems. You can solo mine with a BS in almost any system. Even in 0.0 if you have good skills. In 0.3 and higher (perhaps even down to 0.2) you don't even need much of a tank. In the past I've used a couple of shield hardeners (depending on the rats) and Wasps to keep the rat population down.
From my experience in 0.6 I can passively tank all but the worst of the spawns (ie; ignore them and just keep mining). In 0.5 I have to be more selective and in 0.4 anything more than a lone frigate is too much to ignore.
Edit:Just for the record when I mine in my Apoc these days I use 8 miner IIs, two Mining Laser Upgrades and two shield hardeners. Sadly I can't get a third MLU on Apoc but with the leadership skills I pull in over 111m3 a minute per laser. That fills a can in a smidgeon over half an hour

You're forgetting the Modulated Deep Core Mining Laser + crystal on a bs - this will double the m3 mined.
