Seems like there is a pretty bad shortage of megacyte out there for purchase. What you all think?

Out in fountain the nearest bistot is to a station is 7+ jumps.
All the rest of it is just this baby roid crap. --------------- I used to be in the FA. I like cookies. Eve Radio is teh pwn. |

Last time I checked you couldn't buy megacyte for less than 10K unless you're willing to make lots of jumps to pick up the 3 or 4 that sell for 7.5K from n00bs.

Me thinks a certain well-known megacorp is stockpiling Megacite in order to strangle off the competition.

I'm sure big corps. are feeling the pinch but what about the smaller corps? Must be killing them off.

Yeeeeah... not really.
The real problem is it is becoming a true pain in the ass to mine bistot since it's so many jumps from a station. --------------- I used to be in the FA. I like cookies. Eve Radio is teh pwn. |

I think the distances from stations is just about right - it'd be as cheap as titanium if it could ve found in systems with stations.

Actually no, thanks to the lack of highways between where the big corps are mining the bistot and where the products are being sold, it's survivable for the moment.
If there was a highway route, like that muppet Athren Soulsteal wants between Empire and non-empire space, the smaller manufacturers in Empire space would be completely screwed as they'd be unable to compete against anyone capable of mining megacyte themselves. Right now it's still possible to accept a smaller profit margin even accounting for purchasing the megacyte at the inflated prices.

Not really, bistot is worth twice as much as "usual" and there's still plenty where we usually mine.

sigh, any medium crystal take 1m3 or 0.5 i forget, and they all have mega, multi has the most, medium hull repairer has 8 mega each, take 10m3, rare version hull repairer has even more. if you are lack of mega, go out hunt for those, get some money, get some loot, buy some mega, recycle some mega, problem solved. for mega price too high issue, i think everybody should blame baby roid.... that's the biggest reason cause lacking of mega.

Considering a battleship takes a minimum of around 2500 megacyte... it's kind of difficult to fulfill that from recycling hull repairers. --------------- I used to be in the FA. I like cookies. Eve Radio is teh pwn. |

Actually no. As Jarjar said, the megacyte is worth much right now. And with some scouting we always find some bistot where we mine. The only difference for us is that we earn more - and that isn't exactly killing us ;)

Well then, get explorers. We all know there are hidden stations out there, go find them in 0.0 non-empire space.
That is probably what ccp wants...explorers. Wasn't the game supposed to be originally 2000 systems, but by exploration it would expand to 5000? And you wonder where all the ark went to ;)

Well recently, thanks mostly to the Sinister Russian Cow Corporation , battleship sales and production are in high order. The megacyte shortage appears to actually be causing production delays .
This is bad for everyone from miners and manufactures to pvp fanatics. It slows the game down imo.
Rarely do I support miners and their cause. But I have to say on their behalf, get the mobile refineries in game fast .

... Well, wouldn't megacyte shortages drive material and battleship prices up (good for miners and manufacturers) while forcing people to (meanwhile) settle for low cost replacements like cruisers or even frigates, which might result in more fights as the risk (cost of losing the ship) is smaller (good for pvp)?.. o.O

Is there a "finite" amount of megacyte available in the eve universe? Or is the shortage due to a slow respawn rate? I hope it is the latter as people can mine farther "although inconvienient" until bist respawns closer to home. If it is the former then as more an more battleships are destroyed more bist we be available.....
Don't know if either of these theories are true or not....just curious if any have any information on this.

Quote: while forcing people to (meanwhile) settle for low cost replacements like cruisers or even frigates,
Closer than you think. How do you make the old timers and the new players a little closer, by removing mega in large quantity. If players can not get the mega to build a BS then you force the players to use a cruiser. This would seem to be a perfect answer to balancing the game if it were not for a few things.
1. People will stop using BS not because they can not afford one but because they can not build a replacement. But this will only be short term, the smarter people will store their BS until all their enemies BS have been destroyed then jump out and overpower them.
2. At first glance this would seem to level the playing field with those that use frigs/cruisers exclusively and thus would allow for better PVP. But this just shows CCPs short sightedness, what this will actually do is hurt PVP of any type. Because players will have to really weigh the cost of replacing modules and ships. PPL forget that modules also use mega, while this may seem be good for the market because the price will raise it also will only happen at first. Once the minerals are no longer available people will stop using them.
For the people like Jash that require their coffee cups to have "caution, contents are hot" imprinted on them I will try to simplify. When something becomes too rare it looses it value of purpose. For instance, say jash was given a 2 dollar shirt. Well he can wipe his nose it as usual. But now say his mom gives him a $200,000 shirt; see now the shirt has lost its purpose for him because the replacement cost is too high.
Soon BS will be come to expensive to replace not in ISK but in materials.
The end result, less PVP as players will be less likely to risk their equipment.

Personally I like having a shortage of _something_. EVE is a game of abundance -- want something, go and get it, whee. Megacyte is the closest thing I've seen yet to something in high demand that's in short supply. It's hard for me to see it as a bad thing.
It's not like there aren't battleships out there to be purchased, after all. Maybe you have to pay a little more. Yay, free market.

Quote: didnĘt ccp say that destroyed ships respawned roids or something like that?
ThatĘs the way it used to work before the Pirate Welfare programs started. Once the important ores were moved out to 0.0 space how roids respawned was changed. No one knows for sure the exact formula CCP uses but itĘs effects can be seen. But before we move to that lets examine this:
Quote: This statement shows your short sightedness in assuming the Megacyte shortage is some grand design concocted by CCP.
Are you assuming that it is not?
LetĘs run with this for a sec by examining what we know.
1.We know that the low quality ores are respawing at an amazing rate. 2.We know that the rare and semi-rare ores are respawing at a rate just above minimal. (just enough to form an asteroid with as little as 2 units) 3.We now know that the theory of *roid mass restriction causing the baby roids syndrome is false. 4. We know that CCP has slowly been migrating the rare and simi rare ores to 0.0 systems. (actually not migrating but removing from high sec space)
This is the theory that the calculations were based on a total mass limit and thus because of the giant common roids the rare roids respawn rate was being stunted. We tested this in 3 locations by strip mining 2 systems a 1.0 and a 0.0 and using a .8 system as a control. What we found was that removing the giant roids did nothing to increase the growth rate of the Simi and rare ores. The rare ore simply grow 2 to 4 units a day regardless of what is done to any other roid in the system.
These are the facts not lets examine this. Now to make this simple to add Lets say that there were 1000 systems in high sec space and 1000 systems in low sec space. Now lets remove all the rare items from high sec space the effect is that there will be a shortage in high sec space. Now lets introduce a slow respawn rate on the items and after a while there will be a global shortage. This will happen as soon as the use of the item exceeds the respawn rate. This is what is happing now with mega.
Based on this what conclusion can be made?
1. That a shortage is designed 2. That a shortage was not foreseen (and you would have to be very stupid not to see a shortage happening)
So yes I assume that CCP has planned the shortage because I do not believe any of them are idiots. I think they are tring a stop gap method and not looking long term at the effect.
