Edited by: Amerrus Eka on 17/03/2006 17:20:37 What is the fastest way to determine the type (Rifter/Kestrel) and/or class (cruiser/frigate) of a ship in space? I'm very new to combat and don't know by heart the icons of ships and what classes they are. Even if I r-click on "show info" (slow) I have to read through lines of text before it gives the name and type of the ship (and some infos don't even give that in the first tab).

You can turn on show ship type ticker in the overview settings. This only seems to work for player ships for me though.

Double click on a ship on overview does the same as right click -> show info.
The size of the rectangle tells you if it's a frig, cruiser etc. Other than that, get familiar with the pictures.

What helps some is when you bring up the "show info" window switch to the "required skills" tab. If the "best" required skill is Minmatar Battlecruiser III than its a battlecruiser, if the "best" req. skill is frigate IV than its a frigate... etc. This won't work for NPC's however.

I've just learned to identifify the pictures and note the icon size in the overview. Battleships are really big etc...
The pictures used for your race shouldnt be to to hard to pick up on. After that, just get used to reading the Show Info stuff. _______________

You can also display the ship type in space next to the name. Makes for some seriously long text blobs in space, but it works. (Note: only really works for Player ships.) ---- EVE-Central.com | Obsidian Technologies - Manufacturing, Defense and Logistics. We're hiring! Mail me |

In the overview settings, turn on ship type and turn off everything else. (it's just noise anyway: you don't need to know what corp he's in because his colour will tell you what standing he has.) All you need to do then is zoom out a bit to see what ship he's flying.

All of these are good suggestions, as is right-clicking on the ship, it'll tell you what class of ship it is.
However, it is best to fiddle with the overview so when you scroll over the ship it tells you then.

You can also use the 'look at' button on the overview to get a close look at the ship. If you look really closely you can see what weapons he has!
