Why are the skill training ETAs displayed as a countdown instead of a simple date and time? Not that I mind doing the math, and I am very good at math, it's just that there have been many occations when a skill I am training suddenly shows it's going to take an hour longer then I expected. Of course, these may have been mathimatical errors on my part, but how can I be sure?

And what exactly is that supposed to mean?
A time when the skill training had been started is known, SP counter at that moment is known, SPs to the next level is a constant value, your attributes are known. Everything else is one subtraction, one addition, and two divisions.
Which part here is an "estimate"?

An ETA would be better than a countdown. I use character manager to avoid having to do the math, it gives both a countdown and the ETA and I don't have to start up the Eve client and login etc to find out how my characters are getting on with their training when I am in a hurry to get to work.

personally i find reading that my skill will take "5 days to complete" as opposed to will finish on 25/03/06 because then i'd need to check the current date.

Wouldnt checking the current date be faster than working out when it will finish?
Id like both to show

showing only the date would not make that much sence coz u still would not know if the skill training ends 4.00 in the morning or right in DT ...

Depends what you want to know. If you're scheduling your next skill, then yes. However, if you're picking skills based on completion time ("I need a 3-hour skill now") then the current format is better.
