(for the monkeys.. don't read it if you are going to reply with "who cares" or "whine"... just step away and go somewhere else)
First a brief explanation on the subject "A Knight's Tale". Riddari is the icelandic word for a knight, it is also a word play on my first (RL) name which translates as Knight of God (but I'm an atheist). So that's how I got my name.
It is now time for me to say goodbye and retire to my old home Duripant where I will have kids and grow old. It might take a year or two until all this pod juice leaves my veins and I can start having the kids, all the more time to find a nice lady and a cottage by a river in some remote valley.
Why am I leaving? I've been playing since beta 4 or 5, I am hooked on this game and that is the problem. It finally hit me how hooked I was when our corporation was betrayed by one of our officers who ran off with everything the corporation has worked for since day 1 of release.
I contemplated our losses, 80 original blueprints including an Armageddon one and various hard-to-find large weapons as well as plenty of cruiser blueprints and others. 12k megacyte and a lot lot of zydrine also stung as did all the equipment that was melted down. This was a devastating blow to a group of hard working people, to see one of them (the thief has been one of the hardest workers) decide that he wanted to gank us for no other reason but that he could. So he did.
What I realised was that in a few months we could replace most of the blueprints... not all because many are hard to find. But in a few months everyone else would be well on their way in Tech II... leaving us 4 months behind.
I also realised that it would take a lot of playing time. And I've realised that I simply don't have that time anymore now that summer is over and I'm back at university (for a long delayed B.Sc degree). Full time university, part-time job, part-time project of 8 years and my 'extremely tolerant of EVE' fiancÚe are all things that I should be focusing more on. EVE in addition to all of those is just way too much.
When the news of our decapitation came I got the same feeling I did a few years back when I came home at 3am after having played an OGL match for the 2nd spot in the TFC ladder (we lost by one I think). I was very upset having lost the game and the adrenaline was still pumping hard. It was also 3am and I would not fall asleep for at least an hour and was supposed to get up at 7am. My fiancÚe was naturally sound asleep and I knew that this was wrong. We couldn't play at normal times because our ping to Europe was astronomically high, so we had to play in the USA with all the time difference penalties that entailed. So I threw in my engineer cap, my soldier bazuuka, my scout nails and my medics conc grenades.
Now I throw in my tachyon beams, my Quad-Lif microwarpdrive, my trusted capacitator power relays, my battleship. Having said all of this, I still want to use up a byte or several thousand.
I will miss this game, today I logged in to gather all my stuff into one place and I caught myself thinking that "well... what if I do keep playing.. I got all this good stuff, I love the dominix I own, my armageddon is nothing to sneeze at nor is the apocalypse... my ship collection is cool... my module collection has taken hard work to compile.. ". Damn that was a close call. I have to remain steadfast for my own benefit.
But it's not the modules or the ships I will miss the most. It's the people. In my nature I'm a political and opinionated animal, my days of RL politics are on hold but 10 years ago I was even more active in them than I have been in EVE politics.
This is allready a huge post, and probably only a handful will read it. Do I care? No.

The people of Fountain Great people. All the trash talk about the regional alliances being just pirates is just utter nonsense. Any time you got into trouble in Fountain (spawn out of control, ship going down, needed modules to be saved) anyone who heard your cry for help would come running, leaving their own profitable spawns or mining operations behind. We care.
The people on irc Fun times.
The people of EVE This is a massive universe. It got too massive for me.
CCP Total respect for your courage, ingenuity and dedication. EVE is massive and should be.
I've cancelled my accounts. Now the hard part comes... to decide if I delete Riddari with his 3.3m skill points or if I sell him on eBay or in a direct trade (should anyone want to purchase). He's my creation and I like him, I have a hard time seeing him as a gatecamper somewhere in an apocalypse ganking shuttles. Grafari is a 2.2m mining macine in his dominix, I'm not as attached to him although the Dominix is soooo cool.
This was fun. I love the game. Have fun people, the day you stop having fun you should step away and enjoy the memories.
This was my tale.

Edited by: Riddari on 10/09/2003 11:47:50 Here go my shouts:
My corporations Rising Fury (beta) Unity Corp (beta) Shadow Freetrading (beta/release) Tycho Heavy Industries (release)
Stavros Yes people, Stavros. We joined Rising Fury at the same time in BETA. We had great fun in a tight group. Our ways did part when he became the scourge of plutonium traders everywhere but during the final weeks of beta our paths again crossed as we found ourselves together in Shadow Freetrading Corp. Along with NeoMorph and tekforce we ninja-mined arkonor in Kuhri (Khanid Region) on the first day of EVE. I did contemplate writing my EVE biography... but that might have been over the top. We mined in our noob ships while we sold punishers, we mined in our punishers while we sold omens. We got ahead with sacrifice from all of the SFC members and we made history with the first purchase of a Maller blueprint in release. Stavros is one of the best players you will ever see. Many of you are fooled by his smacktalk but those keeping score will have noticed that he's becoming more lucid on the forums. Don't be fooled, he knows fully well what he is doing. Having fun and lots of it. He is probably one of the richest characters in the game. He has traded more on the market and bought more minerals than you would ever guess. He's shot down more convoys than you have seen so far. He's mined more arkonor and bistot than many of you will ever see. He's fought more PVP battles than most of you will ever. He is (to steal from Iain M. Banks) in my mind The Player of Games (to those that have not read it... he's the best). Stavros has my total respect, our playing styles are different so I did not join him for his pirating or ganking expeditions. When Stavros formed End of EVE (sub-corp of SFC) I did not consider following him on that path, and when EoE merged into m0o I never gave it a second thought. For those that think I'm in awe of Stavros and am kissing his butt, I am not and certainly have no reason to. I just want to shatter the misconception that many have (and Stavros actually tries to maintain) that he's a l33t kid that doesn't know jack but how to shoot down industrials and pods. I'll tell you this... if I had my back up against the wall.. I'd want Stavros there at my side. The guy is awesome and he knows it, I know it and you should know it too. Just don't hesitate to pull the trigger when you see him
NeoMorph Without him we would have had many more bugs waiting to be squashed. His patience and knack for accidentally losing stuff due to bugs have served this community well as have his other activities with eve-ix and other projects. A top guy.
tekforce, Lallante, Cortex Reaver, Agent Xero et al My former buddies at SFC. Just listening to their raids on TeamSpeak was huge fun. They all worked hard to get SFC to the top by being the first corporation to buy the Maller blueprint. They have all caused immensive ship losses and they have all had a great time, which is what games are about.
Latta, Sgt. Drill, Vitari, Digiball et al The other half of SFC who worked as hard for the Maller BP. They went on to form Carbide Industries when Stavros and the others switched to their rampage. Lots of hard work for the corporation and for the community on eve-i.
Dulcinea, Lincoln, Trunicus, Torval Sontu, DaAliG, Shadowspawn, Elissen and all the others Dulcinea welcomed me to Tycho when I wanted to try something different. A great person who I remain in contact with still after she's quit. All my fellow members at Tycho, we had great times. I don't hold much grudge against Omniwar, he played hard and was a team member, right up until the end when he shafted us. The rest of the Tycho members are no less important, I will keep in touch with many of them. Sorry about leaving you out of the headline, I just listed the first people that I met in the corp and the other 50 of you were just as vital to our game.
Jade Constantine and the people of the boards Your writings elevated parts of the board with their grasp of grammar and wordplay. Sorry we didn't meet for a lunch in Venal, best of luck there. Thanks to all those that have made these boards a place that I've used hours reading every day, a timesink I will have a hard time resisting from visiting after my cancellation. So a shout to all the people I've agreed or disagreed with during my stay here, your names are too many to mention but you probably know who you are, this includes the people of TTi (while Ayn Rand is still KOS for me in RL ) and other of my opponents.
All my friends in EVE You know who you are, many have offered us support due to our immense losses. I thank all of you and hope to meet you again later, assisting my corp members to adjust to new corporations would be appreciated.

Good luck Mr.Riddari; am hesitant to say farewell, because you never know how life can turn around and for whatever reasons put you back in charge of your ship, few months (years)down the road... :s

Well it had to come I suppose.
I've given my battleship to a friend, some of my stuff to the corp and the rest might just possibly get me a fistful of dollars more if I sell.
I still have a few days left of the subscription... if I create a treasure hunt I'll be sure to inform the boards.
Now please... no more of this.

Sad to see you go.
I'd sell your character on Ebay. I'm guessing with 3.3m (which is 0.5m more than me) you also have alot of money. Should get you a really nice sum on Ebay.

Never knew you and never will but the post was most impressive . Have fun in the real world, maybe someday soon I too will see it.....altho I doubt it.
Your point about addiction worries me. It has just occurred to me that if for some unforseeable reason the eve servers were to crash indefinetly would there be enough council groups in the world to deal with the fall out? I seriously doubt it. Think I might start my next entrepreneurial venture with an Eve Rehab Clinic

Farewell Riddari,
I wish you all the very best, and remember the bright times not the villainy, for in autumn days 'tis cheerful faith not dark revenge to conjure smile about the hearth.
If I was you I wouldn't sell the character. Money is nothing against future possibility. And for a 3million point character even a frigate purrs ;)
Let it lie and take a while to mull it over.
Love and peace.

Edited by: SlightlyMad on 11/09/2003 01:23:24 I'm sorry man. I really feel for your loss. I'd be pretty devasted too.
However... I'm not that focused on assets and I don't think that the value of gameplay increases the more you have.
Now.. you see 4-5 months of work piling up in front of you. And you also see yourself loosing a position as far as corp standing go.
Taking a chance here, I think that you might be a little to competitive in nature. To me, trying to be the best. Or actually be the best (or richest or whatever) are not the reason I play. Such "accomplishments" doesn't realyy give me anything.
I see the playing as the goal and the fun itself
Of course.. I was as horny for a BS as everyone before I got it. And I'm chasing money to buy rare and expensive toys. But thats not all of what I do. Looking at my hangar and see piles of minerals and expensive equip and whatever doesn't give me any kicks.
The kicks I get from the game is what I do.
And I had as much fun in a frigate as I have in a battleship today.
I do understand your feelings though. But just giving up?
