Well, /signed would mean that they agree, sort of like "signing a petition" or something like that.

I'd love to see personalised outsides, but I'm not so sure I'd like to see the equal and opposite counter reaction... More skins -> More memory needed -> More RAM and bigger grapics card needed. Personally, dropping out of warp in a populated area, I feel that having the game freeze for 1-2 seconds is enough. I'd hate for it to turn into 5 seconds, or, god forbid, 30-60 seconds - like on WoW when you enter Iron Forge.
If it can be done without losing performance then sure, I'm absolutely all over this idea.
If not... I'd say "when hell freezes over". ;)

well to help reduce lag they could just add nose art, like the old WW2 bombers had.

its a good idea signed.
They could add a set of new skins for the ships maybe not let ppl make there own skins as that would add lots of lag to the game. But maybe have 4 or 5 choices of what color your ship is like a black apoc or one in space camo would be cool.

The added idea of a config option to turn player paintjobs on/off makes the idea a lot more viable too. I'm starting to like this idea. A few standard paint jobs, nose art (a-la corp logos?) and the option to turn it off. Neat. Can I have a picture of a tasmanian devil on the bow of my Vexor please? ;)

I agree, if it makes performance take a hit then no, but I would like to see the something along the lines of nose art or even just the ships name and/or corporation logo on the hull.

Here's one possible solution.
semi transparent skins - they could be applied to all ship designs. the key here is that this semi transparent skin is mapped atop the existing skin. And even more importantly, there would be only 256 to choose from. this would require only one additional byte of data per ship within visible range. It would however, as does any new graphic element, require more processing on the client.

I think some of you forget that the devs have already said this wont ever happen the most that will happen is that a corp logo will appear on your ship and is only seen when you zoom CLOSe up to a ship to reduce lag.
Thats assuming they decide to do it which is not likely it seems. -----------------------------------------------

Edited by: Boris Marvellous on 21/03/2006 17:13:28 I think that should be not full skin change of ship, it will take too much download for it. Well, if EVE download not too much traffic, then if'll be in 1 location, near warp gates, and there will be 50 ships, for exaple 1 ship skin will take 100-500KB, and it'll be minimum 5MB only for skins, if u'd like to make option: "do not download skin's", it's not good ;) I think better to do only change of logo, small logo on ship, for exaple side logo on Caldari frigates. __________________________________________________________________ Russian power is here! ;) |

Actually you don't need to use 'skins' to be able to change the appearance.
Though it would be nice with a logo and skins (most games already allow this), I would be happy with just being able to apply some colours to the ships, much like in homeworld.. Ie 3-4 different sections whose colour you can change. Colours shouldn't cause much of a problem, as it's just a colour filter.
That would make me happy.

Hm, so why do we want to have skins or coloring - for some personal touch, customisation, a way of identifying ships ?
Well, how much would it be worth if e.g. those parts, which could be colored, were black on all ships ? Wow, what an individualisation ! ...
So think again. Either take just the corp logo, or make the color choices anything between pink, yellow and cyan.
Otherwise you could just as well open a thread: "please, CCP let me color my ship black or make more black ship models!"
Sorry to all those who prefer red or blue, but I guess you get the point.

Well consider this, for argument sake 3 parts of the ship coloured, could be handelled in 3 bytes of extra data, 256 colours to choose from.
so the combinations are 256*256*256 => 16777216 combinations - sounds like plenty of room for individualisation to me. And quite cheap too 3 bytes of extra ship data.
Similar ideas are commonly used for skins and logos, however skins take more system resources to load. Though with most systems now a days that really shouldn't be a significant problem.
The main issue is that to avoid problems with slower systems (although most companies don't do this), they need to add in a "don't load skins/logos/colours" option for slower systems.

Make a gallery funktiom somewhere for those that want to show off their skins. Make the skins only client side to prevent massive lag. If you want to view the skin of other pilots make it like this:
Look at (the ship) -> View modified skin
This way ppl can show their skins to eachother ingame without creating lag for everyone.
Maybe add a ship skin gallery on the forums too. ------ Ö Ship lover

You didn't get my point. Of what avail is it to have 16mill combinations, if >80% of the players choose the largely same color scheme ? I bet there would be between five and ten different ones. Not worth the effort if you ask me.

Why not allow people to skin their ships and then make it so that they're the only ones who can see it. In practice, if I had a Raven (battleship), I would be able to skin it to look like the Starship Enterprise, but everyone else in the game would still see a Raven.
Everyone would only be loading their own skin. I think that's a fair skins vs performance trade-off.

Well it's not like 16million combinations is harder than 7, in fact it is probably easier because CCP wouldn't have to deal with "that red looks pink to me!!" whines.

They shuld be limited to some parts of the ship, as the main ship texture makes the diffrence between normal, tech2 and fraction ships. So, full freestyle texturing wuld mean no "elite" looks.
That wuld be easily lag-minimised with some limited options; -add corp logo somewhere on the ship. -add predefined "markings" to choose from, like stripes on wings or dots on hull ;)
Another thing: make the paints cost a bit, depending on ship size.

I like the notion of Homeworld style colorings at least on the ships. I yearn for my multi-colored fluoro mining barge. I think allowing this + corps to submit a corp logo when they get above a certain size would be a good solution.

maybe if you could add your corp logo to the tail of your ship or something. all out skinning would just get out of hand, and i think it would really ruin the look of the game. seeing bright yellow and pink ships flying about wouldn't look all that cool, imagine the fraps videos people would come out with :S
but a wee bit of personalisation would be nice

I really think this is an idea that needs more support. One of the things that irks me about EVE is how my ship looks precisely like everyone elses, down to the racial logo on the side of the ship. If ships had two or three color swatches (in the same way you could change the color and accent of your ship in Homeworld), it would help a lot.
You could make it as easy as a primary color, a secondary color, and a engine exhaust color.

OMG a jump into Jita now is bad enough.
Just imagine 700+ ships having an extra couple of bytes of data each. Jump in wait... have lunch... watch a movie... go to bed... get up and have breakfast... Oh I'm in Jita now.

Yeah because 700 x 2 bytes is 1400 bytes total and we're all using 300 bps modems from 1986. While the custom skinning of ships is beyond consideration, coloring some trim pieces and striping, and adding corp/alliance logos are great ideas.
