'Directional' is a sorting option in the scanner interface.

Never used it, but I know it's there.

I was under the impression the directional scanner was a bit buggy, but not 100% on this.

It's not buggy, but it *is* sensitive to z-axis changes, so you have to be very careful to keep your camera view on the same plane, or else you will lose your target, especially with angles less than 60 degrees.

I can regularly find "hidden" roids using directional scanner . Its just a matter of trial and error and then a lot of practice until you get it sussed.

Range scanner for a 360 degree plain search, to see if anything might come up (first going to the sun in a system is a good idea), followed up by multiple directional scans (and probably warps to a 'better' location) and smaller view angles to zoom in on a precise location.

Eve-i.com published a really good article on it a while back.

Using the directional scanner is tricky because you must understand that we are playing in a 360o world. So, if you use the 90o directional, you will scann only 90os of space. Think of it like an icecream cone and you are looking all around with the sharp end in your eye. Shocked

Is the scanner broken? I can't get it to less than a 90 degree scan, it jumps back to that setting no matter what I do.

Is there a point in flying out to empty space for ages with no reference points to look for a belt or are they usually in the vicinity of other celestial bodies?

If you stop and think for a second how unfeasibly massive each solarsystem is, flying in one direction hoping to come across something is admirable optimistic. Razz

WRT to the scanner angle not changing, l've had this too. I can only suggest a relog to cure it...

Optimistic perhaps but if you go to the link posted above and read his different steps you'll come across a map showing him in a position away from every celestial body, far away, doing scans inward against the center of the system.
