I keep hearing about people finding stations that aren't on the station lists. Same thing with asteroid belts.

My question is this: If these things don't show up on the scanner, and don't show on the maps and menus.. how do you go about looking for them? Do you just find them by accident?

It would be cool if people who have actually found an unlisted station or belt relate the story of how you did it. I'm not asking for locations, just techniques.

Use your scanner and scan by range... It takes time to scan the system, but you might find something that's not in "the list".

Be careful.

Somebody pulled off a bookmark scam claiming to have found an unmarked station.

The scanner doesn't have enough range to scan a whole system. There's overlapping techniques but I prefer to warp to each planet and scan that planet plus all of it's moons and belts in one go. Depending on the number of asteroid belts at that planet the scan might still take a few minutes.
The tricky part is *finding* the hidden location using the directional scanner then...

I never seem to pick much up on the scanenr, so i resorted to going from planet to planet in system looking for interesing places, and noting them all down for later, but I've never found a station I could dock at that wasn't listed, plenty of abandoned or ruined station tho.

btw: is there ever anyting at moons? there are too many to check in each system, so I stick to the planets, has anyone found anything orbiting moons?

Is it worth bothering to look for these things ? I mean, is there ever anything there except interesting graphics and an air of undefinable mystery ?

Also, do such things appear in empire space, or only out in the sticks ?

There are usually better spawn points at these places for killing npc pirates, I have been to a spawn in 0.7 space with an ascriber and several terrorists. also you get the good stuff from the flotsams Cool

It is very difficult. Where you are wrong is that bases DO show up on scanner. Sometimes you have to jump planet to planet, open up the range and then bracket it down (like the Clock game on the Price is right). Once you find which planet the base is near, the real trick is using the directional scanner COMBINED with the distance scanner to close in on it. That take practice and time. Evemail me in game and I'll let you in on a location to practice on, if you don't get killed getting there!

Nope, all the hints and tips in the forums are free - you just need to register before you can browse. They also have some free locations as well. Give it a few weeks and everything will be free, according to their news bulletin anyway (I'm not afiliated to explore-eve).

TerminusX, I would like to try the scanner and find a hidden base. I have not used my scanner yet. That is if we are talking the magnifying glass I think near the comm area.

Send me a starting point if you are so inclined to give me hint and I will take it from there on how to make that scanner thing work and what it does.

BTW, does anyone else use that scanner and is it useful and I am clueless on it's functions?
