I am currently in a Catalyst destroyer and it's an okay ship. L1 secuirty missions are overkill in this sucker but it is time to move on and move up. I am in the process of training up to cruiser status. What type of cruiser should I be shooting for? I'm spending a lot of time ratting and doing security type missions. While doing missions if I have extra cargo space left over after getting done I'll make a stop off at an asteroid field and do a little mining to top off the ol' cargo bay.
I haven't done a lot of PvP other that get my little frig obliterated because I had my chat window closed when some corporation peeps told me to stay away from where they were. I was just exploring a new area and WHAM I got obliterated before I even had the opportunity to run away. Like a frigate can really do anything to a cruiser...

You'd be surprised at what a well set up frigate can do to a long range / anti cruiser cruiser 
As for a Gallente cruiser, you WANT a Thorax!

If your doing missions I recommend the vexor, microwarpdrives are useless in deadspace. a vexor loaded with light/medium drones, an afterburner and a reasonable tank will do the job easily.
if you like turrets though, yea, the thorax is my choice, you'll just be better off sticking an afterburner on it.

Right now I am equipped with:
6x125mm rail 1 (Uranium ammo)
Civilian Shield Booster
2x100mm Titanium armor
Civilian Cargo Expander
I've actually been eyeing that Vexor. A thorax seems more of a combat role rather than a dual role ship.

Take off the civilian shield booster and put something more useful like a tracking computer if you can. Or even just a small shield booster instead.

Frigates are the best ship class in game imo - don't underestimate them. I've taken down cruisers with Merlin and punisher frigates before. In 0.0 we regularly go hunting in groups of frigates and taking down battleships. EVE isn't a game where the biggest ship wins like in many other MMOs.
