I like to use the keyboard as much as possible, but it does not seem to be possible to map hardpoints to a key without using alt, shift or ctrl. Am I mistaken about this, or if not, is there some way around this? Why would you not be able to just map keys directly? Thanks.

Because there are tons of text-input areas in the game. Imagine if you map, say, A to fire a weapon.

BOOM weapon fires!
Or even if it only works when unfocused, imagine if you're opening a window, but forgot to focus.

I was having this problem also when I was trying to swap the keymappings of my high slots and midslots. I hate having to hit Alt-F1 every time to use my afterburner. F1 would have worked nicely. So even though it's already mapped (I've tried unmapping it before assinging it to mid-slot position 1) it still won't accept the remapping unless Alt, Shift or Ctrl is involved...grrr.

I'm a noob, no doubt, but I'm not seeing that as a problem Dark Shikari. Weapons only fire on a locked target right?
It would be nice to be able to maneuver and select targets with the mouse while controlling weapons and modules with the keyboard... this is not practical (at least for me) using an alt/shift type control scheme, and the F1 - F8 buttons are too far away.
Is it maybe possible to locate the file where the key bindings are kept and manually edit it?

I used to feel the same way about the key combos that you do. Then I got a Logitech G15 Keyboard and I no longer worry about it. I can assign the most convoluted key combo to a single key and not need to worry about anything else. Other little things like being able to assign all my primary weapons to fire with one key press really help out while ratting.
There are other pieces of hardware out there that do something similar but I'm quite happy with the G15.
Not really what you were looking for, I know, but I thought I'd add this in here just so you're aware that there are other solutions.

Alt-F4 you mean? Works fine for me (as in activating the mid-4, not shutting down EVE). What OS are you running?

Nostromo Speedpad
I use this for FPS gaming, but it seems it could be easily adapted to any game. You can program it to make multiple key stokes with one button. Many people are against hardware like this, but as long as it only takes the tedium out of the game, it is fine by me. ----------------------------------------------- "Eve is a sandbox. alt-f4 boots you out of WoW, one of those combos you really don't want encoded in your muscle memory .

Just drag the Afterburner from your GUI to the F1 slot. If you don't know how. If you hold left mouse down on a mod then a keyboard ghost shows up so you can move stuff you use a lot to the F key's, rather than the Alt+ or Ctrl+

Pinyin makes a very useful point, you can drag the module icons around to a preferred setup.
So I move all primary mods up to the primary row, F1-F8. That allows me do F1,F2,... and so on before I CTRL-click a target and begin targetting. As soon as I have a lock, my EW, weapons, etc all activate instantly.
Secondary systems like armor repair, etc are moved to the secondary row for activation whenever they are needed. (I find it easier to do ALT-F# then CTRL-F#.) [center] * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

No, unfortunately. You can just right click on the category line, under which the drones are located and give general orders to them. So, when they are in the drone bay, you can click on the Drones in Bay (I forget how it is worded) and select Launch Drones. When they are launched, you can right click on the line Drones in Local Space and select "Orbit Ship", "Attack Target", or "Return to Drone Bay". Hopefully you get the idea. (Course let's not get into the whole bugged drone AI issue. )

thanks, i guess it would be hard to have a keyboard shortcut for drones. you gotta choose which drones to launch, which drone to engage target, ect. too many options.

You can make extra launch groups say Rat, Mining or Structure one so you would put your rat specific drones in the rat folder, the mining drones in mining and the Heavy damage but very slow drones in your Structure one then you instead of just choosing launch drones you can choose which group/type to launch, or just do launch drones like before if you just wanna. But unless you have a ship with a large drone bay your better off just taking the drones your going to need.
