Its the closest thing CCP has given us to a capital sized mining platform. Carriers are logistic ships and fleet support ships. There is no denying that. But you can support a fleet of miners just as well as a fleet of combat ships. Its not a good solo mining ship but it will provide a nasty defense for mining ops. As well as gang bonus for fitting the mining forman links. Even though only the ice link is out AFAIK.
Believe his question reffered to mining in a carrier alone, and the later reply by someone else refered to using 9 techII mining drones. Is mining in carrier alone silly HELL YA. can you use a SUPPORT ship to SUPPORT a mining operation.. well uhmm yea, Do quite often myself actually. But that wasn't the question.

When referring to a mining operation, I implied that I had at least one person with me, as that person has the Cyno Field for me to jump to. I could have 1 barge and 1 hauler in the hangar bay. Friend ejects out of cyno ship and goes into barge starts mining. Can gets full, gets out hauler and fills hauler up. Continues to mine until Corp bay is full. Friend gets back into cyno ship (probably a covops or similar) and starts making the trip back. Hauler and Barge get packed into ship bay. A third person back at HQ opens cyno field, and the carrier jumps back home.
Now that I analyze the data, this setup wouldn't profit unless you were able to mine something really rare, such as Mercoxit or Bistot. Mercoxit can't be mined by drones to my knowledge, and one barge full, one hauler full, and one corp bay full of ore wouldn't yield that much mins. Perhaps ninja mining with a Carrier isn't a good idea.
A Titan however...
Another question: Could you fit a small POS in a Carrier? Does the corp bay, and hangar bay with 1 or 2 haulers with the parts have enough room to carry a small POS?
Thanks for answering my questions.
However, nobody mentioned trying to eject a shuttle/frig from the hangar bay just before a carrier explodes, then trying to make your way to the shuttle/frig to escape. Has anyone tried this? ___________________________________________________ "I'm an engineer, not a miracle worker!" - Scotty, Star Trek: The Original Series |

If I had a carrier, I'd fit it with deadspace armor tanking mods, get a few friends to remote boost me, fill my highs with nos, and gate camp all day long. Signature file size and dimensions to big, please keep it under 400x120 and 24000 bytes - Petwraith |

you get a 30 second "stepping out to find a bush" timer after you eject from a ship (atleast i think that's the message you get ). So untill that time is up you cant board a new ship. Ejecting from it *before* it explodes, is 99% of the time a bad idea (in any ship), because, what if the enemies spot you doing it and manage to all stop firing... free carrier? :P
It's possible to pull such a thing, you can directly choose board ship on the empty shuttle *just* before your main ship explodes and the attackers will never have the reaction time to stop firing, but i just dont see the use.
I think you shouldnt worry about what happens if you get your carrier blown up, but worry about how to not get it blown up in the first place. ;p

Indeed!
I don't intend to get my Carrier blown up, but just in case, I want an option for a speedy getaway. Or even drop an Inty/HAC/BC and continue fighting (BS won't fit, yet). ___________________________________________________ "I'm an engineer, not a miracle worker!" - Scotty, Star Trek: The Original Series |

I would park it outside of an outpost and send waves of fighters after sniping harpies.

mids 3x basic tracking computers 1 100000000000mn ab
lows 7x ballistic controls

I would use it to farry POS fuel and supplies from empire to 0.0
(which is what it's mostly used for atm btw...)
Fighter drones are nice and all, but meh... _________________________________________________________

Actually, carriers are really good for defending home systems against raiding parties.
If you just get something like a frigate with 4 sensor boosters, and orbit the gate at 100km with 5 fighters from a Carrier parked in a safespot/POS... when when a hostile comes in simply instalock, assign the fighters, and warp to an SS.
If the target is a cruiser or larger, their only choice is to leave the system or call in friends to try and kill the fighters before they die themselves.
Doesnt work so well against large groups, but its a superb tactic to deter casual hostiles in larger ships.
