I love the game and i love the graphics. If you guys promoted on TV or sell your products in video game shops, i think you could boost your member count by about 13OMG000%. good work.

CCP started EVE with a publishing deal with some company or another. That's why you can sometimes find those dorky boxed versions of EVE on shelves in some Gamestops still. However this is a lot cheaper, like Steam.
and they do advertise, refresh the Penny Arcade front page enough times and you'll see EVE's flash ad on the right side.

belive it or not, this game is I think about 3 years old now.
aside from occasional banner ads here and there.. CCP isn't that great at advertising. and people have been pretty much saying what your saying, for... well probably since the game came out, nearly.
the other problem though is that while the game is great, for those who can adapt to it... it doesn't have the mass market digestability of games like WoW.
that is... its too hard. for some people anyway.

CCP has advertised on Scifi UK, countless websites, and has had full-page spreads in tons of magazines.
CCP can't have the kind of coverage a game like WoW has, simply because they can't afford 10s of millions a year on advertising.
But EVE ads are everywhere these days.

The MMORPGs that have had TV ads. Star Wars Galaxies latest one looks like a infomercial. And there is Everquest Online Adventures, "TIME TO SLAY THE DRAGON".
But yeah EVE works on some banner ads and word of mouth mostly. Word of mouth is better I think, just look at goonfleet.
My sig needs some color in it. |

I completely agree. I have been trying to get some friends into playing EVE Online but even with the free trial, they just don't seem to be "hooked" on it. It picks up the pace to slow, the tutorial a bit too overwhelming, the goals to vague.

Edited by: Sir Juri on 23/03/2006 03:05:57 they got tons of free advertisement mmorpg.com best mmo 2005, and over here rated top mmo all-time, and go into SWG on any server youll see ppl shouting screw this game lets get eve-online
I got hooked by watching movies etc of blob fleets fighting and readin' alot. Think if more ppl saw what they "can" do one day in the game theyll be hooked!

They HAVE been.
First the article in PC Gamer (US), then the prominent back-page ad in the magazine for a few months, then recently, a free code for the 14-day trial (easy enough to get WITHOUT the magazine, but it was still prominence nonetheless).
PC Gamer's kinda welched since, their last month's issue, which "highlighted" MMOs and their progress and future, failed to mention EVE *or* CCP except in a small column titled "Still Kicking" with the undermention of "Contrary to rumor, these games aren't dead yet."

ok, maybe its better than it used to be.
but it just doesn't FEEL real heavily advertised... if that makes any sense.
probably having an inch of shelf space at retailers might help... that is in a consistent way thats actually supported... ect, while I haven't been one to go to the store and go down the aisle saying "hmm, what game do i want to buy... Ooh this one looks neat!" I've heard that some people actually do that.

the Google method seems to work well TBH, one person telling another is in some ways better then commerical advertising.

Then in SWG saw ppl screaming about EVE beeing great and so I decided to take a look at EVE (beeing SWG was crap.) And now here I am

They have had a marketing freeze for the last 6 months or so, while they sorted out the server side hardware issues. I believe they are returning to advertising "soon". --

Kali will have a whole new set of newbie missions post-tutorial, which will help to introduce new players to everything you can do in EVE FAR better than the current set (I.E. no more endless courier missions.) So expect a marketing blitz to accompany The Great War. -------------- What good are actions if there's no one to tell the tale afterward?

wait.. people watch TV STILL?? Come into the 21st century people. Wait till it hits DVD then watch the whole series.
Pffft.. TV.
And yeah.. It seems like I can't go anywhere on the net without running across an EvE Online add. Very nice.

There is to many noobs as it is, we don't need more, Soon the Servers won't beable to handle this player base and CCP will be scrambling around saying wtf do we do now ________________________________ Club Seals Not Sandwichs |

ummm, there are EVE ads all over the net. They just don't bite you into the nose.
If you want to have more rookies, feel free to come into (rookie) help and partake in getting them started. Word of mouth ads are much more efficient in gaining long time pilots than TV or mag ads can ever be. --*=*=*-- Megadon CCP wanted a well known artist and celebrity to test the new font so it's approval would be well known. I got here over the newspaper review in one computer papers. And this is primarily "serious" paper, with only one game description each issue.... and EVE-Online was described in two separate issues, so it got me interested...

Noobs turn to Veterans too, you know? Just give the noob players who play for only a month or so some loving instead of making them easy targets.

I think CCP have decided the best way to promote the game is by word of mouth. Because if you see a silly picture advertising it and think oh ill check it out you will play it for a day or two , think this is sh*t and drop it. But If a friend who plays eve alot tells you about they will say stick at it, and warn you that the first month or two aint great, It then keeps you playing and ccp get a more solid player base that actually play the game, not just a bunch of people who play it for a couple of days then leave it. Thats my opinion anyway.
But I think in the future, and like some one said when kali comes out eve will grow again rapidly. Im just waiting for them to introduce the new graphics stuff so that my silly graphics card gets used in eve as its mainly cpu heavy I have been told....

I just started playing almost three weeks ago and really like the game for the gameplay, the stability of the client leaves a little something to be desired though. I've tried to talk my brother and another friend into playing, so far my brother's on the fence but my friend had a lot of issues in the tutorial and decided against the game. The free trial is the best marketing tool they have going now, but I think the tutorial needs some love and overall game stability needs improvement also imho.

I bought the game in a box. But that was when it had only been out for about 4 months. I still have the box and the original manual as well! It's great to look at it and see the old UI.
As for advertising the game there are loads of adverts, most of them are on the geekie websites like penny arcade and Ctrl-alt-delete

I dont know of more customers are needed. Right now unless the hardware can support an additional 100K subs and 50K concurrent online users it would be a waste of time for CCP and result in unhappy customers both new and old. Dont just complain, do something. Channel macrointel meet with likeminded folks, spottings, intel |

Eves server is barely supporting it's current player count. Advertising would probably do more harm than good, imagine a thousand noobs in rens. That would happen if they advertised in mainstream tv.

Oveur stated at the gathering in Vegas that there has been a freeze on marketing for now due to the rapid growth over the past 6 months and the reallocation of the budgets to accomodate the cost of new hardware.
