At high security jumpgates, I usually see concord and customs ships. But sometimes there are also police and faction navy ships there too. What do these ships do that concord and customs don't do already?

Edited by: Alexis DeTocqueville on 23/03/2006 05:54:45 The same reason the F.B.I. doesn't do traffic stops, local ordinance infractions, and state offenses. Each nation has its own definitions of contraband which are not universal.
CONCORD can be considered akin to a "federal" level law enforcement agency while the national navies handle the laws related strictly to their territory.

They shoot at you if you have -5 or less with their faction, regardless of whether you have bad CONCORD standings.
At least that's how I remember it working.

It put it slightly differently:
Concord - Kinda like if the UN were a police force. They let nations go about their own business and only intervene when international laws are broken - e.g. murder.
Customs - They fine/destroy you for carrying the wrong stuff. Depends on whose space you're in as to what's illegal. Just like you can carry drugs in the Netherlands but not in many other places, or that alcohol is forbidden in Saudi Arabia. It all depends on where you are as to what they care about.
Navies - Like any navy, they're there to stop their faction's enemies, but it's not their job to enforce the laws of the land.
It's a pretty good system, actually. Each party has its own goals and they don't interfere with the others.

And, presumably, the national navies are going to play a fairly substantial role in Kali's Warfare system. -------------- What good are actions if there's no one to tell the tale afterward?

If navy ships are at the gate its likely someone with low standing to that faction came in. Customs wont care since their not carring contraband, Concord dont care you havent killed anyone recently, but i believe navy ships actively seek out and attack players with a low enough standing to them while they are in their space.

No, navy ships are always present at gates in high sec. It's been like that for at least the 2+ years I've been playing. It's just that recently they've actually been given something to do: kill people with bad faction standing.

Oh, navy ships shooting you when you get a negative standing below X is nothing new. I was already hunted by the Gallente navy for that once more then two years ago.
The only recent change I the level of negative standing at which ti happens I think. Used to be as easy as being below -2.0 btw, so it's not like the role of nvaies has increased over time.

When you're attacked by a faction's navy, is that a similar attack as Concord does when you illegaly attack someone in empire? Or is it possible to defend against it?

Faction navy used to be quite doable. At least, two years ago it was.
There's nothign to be gained tho, so it's not like you have any use for killing them other then maybe RP.
