I have all the basic skills needed to get to T2 shield hardeners and have also got to level 3 on the new damage type specific shield compensations (do they give me any help at all when I am using active shield hardeners??)
I'm just wondering what else, if anything, I should be training for the best tanking available?

----Main Shield Skills---- Shield Operation: Shield recharge time Shield Management: Shield's capacity Tactical Shield Manipulation: Hardeners and penetrating shields. Shield Compensation: Less cap for boosters Shield Upgrades: Less CPU for mods Kin/Therm/EM/Exp Shield Compensation: Resistance improvements
----Other Skills---- Energy Management: Cap capacity Energy System Operation: Increase cap regen

Shield Upgrades is of little use for active tanking, since you shouldn't be using extenders anyway. You should fit hardeners or cap modules instead.
Whether the new shield compensation skills help with active tanking depends on your setup. If you're using active hardeners, then they're pretty much worthless. They'll help if you get caught with your pants down, but only a tiny amount, and you could just activate your hardeners anyway.
If you're using passive resistance amplifiers (because you don't have enough cap, etc.) they could be useful. With the compensation skills at level 5, passive amplifiers can come close the effectiveness of active hardeners.

With compensation skills at 5, T2 passive hardeners surpass T2 active hardeners in strength.

Hmm, as I understand it, this is not correct. I do not have the skills at level 5, however as I understand it, it works as follows.
Active: Tech II = 55%
Passive: Tech II = 37.5%
With Specific Compensation at level 5
Active: Tech II = 55%
Passive: Tech II = 37.5% * 1.25 = 46.875%
55% > 46.875% which would imply that an Active Tech II hardener is better. Am I missing something here?

I think he means better as in they take no cap and they're active all the time in exchange for a difference of less than 10% resistance (before stacking penalties).
Wouldn't a couple of Invulnerability Field II's be better though, unless you specifically harden against EM damage?
The same thing kind of goes for Passive Armor Hardeners. However, a couple Adaptive Nano Membranes II with level 4 in Armor Compensation skills is pretty nice.

Very true. Especially if you fit them on a Prophecy, which gets armor resist bonuses with the Battlecruiser skill. ---------

Are you sure shield resistances work the same? I remember having Cruiser lvl3 and 15% default EM resistance on a moa which has 5% bonus to all resistances.

Am I sure? No.
However when RMR came out a bunch of people tested the skills out and that was what was reported on the forum. I have them all at Level 1 and I have never bothered to run the math.
In regards to Invul II being better than a targetted resist:
3x Invul II are better across the board than 3x any Individual Hardener (Not duplicated)
So 3x Invul II > 1x EM + 1x Kinetic + 1xThermal
However for targetted resistances like killing Gurista for example: 3x Invul < 2xKinetic + 1x Thermal
You get a little more Thermal out of the 3x Invul but since 85% of the damage is Kinetic overall you are ahead.
On most Gurista Missions (My main mission focus) I generally load 2x Kinetic II, 1xInvul II.
The above, I have run the math on :)

Edited by: coldplasma on 23/03/2006 22:42:50 i'm gonna give it a test right now
EDIT: Yeah dude, you're right, it's 5% more actual resistance when it's ship bonuses and x1.05 extra when it's compensation skills.
