Hello there my beloved brethren and sisters,
So my question is... why so much secrecy about upcoming content and the direction of EvE? I really hate secrecy as we have to deal with it all the time out-of-pod in RL.
So much redaction in the CSM minutes. Made me a sad bear.
Is because of the "Rabble Rabble Rabble?" Or is it all the "I'm Leaving EvE" threads or something? Is it because the threat of people unsubscribing can become a reality? What happened to the HTFU mentality introduced in that CCP rap song?
I'm curious... things used to be way more open.

Because the things talked about in the CSM are subject to change and are more often than not simply vague ideas talked about and thrown around the room without any real development work having gone into them yet. It's called expectation management.
Players as a general demographic are incapable of understanding the concept of "we haven't even started working on it yet", so we run into issues where players rage about stuff they didn't even need to know about. Let's say CCP was talking about designing a new module that does a fancy thing.
Some players will rage about the fancy thing it does and call it OP before any stats are made.
Some players will rage about CCP designing something that isn't part of their gameplay instead of fixing [playstyle], before the final functionality is finished.
Some players will rage at CCP for nerfing their playstyle in favor of [Goons/N3/carebears/pirates], when CCP isn't even sure if they want it to be allowed at all in [game area].
Some players will use the advance information to figure out how best to make trillions off the introduction of it via market games or be perfectly trained for it, spend all their money/time on getting ready for its release, then rage when CCP changes how it will be produced/used.
Finally, when CCP decides they cannot feasibly work out the technical limitations of the module, some players will rage about the half-assed functionality or the cancellation of the whole idea. Because "CCP PROMISED US THIS MODULE".
It's almost always a bad idea to present your ideas to the customers in the MMO biz before you have something tangible and polished to show them. Ch+½j+ì Katrina Oniseki ~ (RDC) Chief Operations Officer ~ [I-RED] Director of Public Relations |

CCP, trading shiny pictures for playability since 2003.. EvE, a cutting edge game. The only game to provide Matrix style gameplay for the masses! (trouble is, most people don't have 9 hours to waste on a one hour fight.) |

That's true of gamers in general.
Give them a millimeter, and the noisy bunch will take a mile and complain about not meeting expectations. It's better to just tell them as little as possible, or only tell them something when it's just about to come out so there's no possible way they can misinterpret it and run with it. |

probably becuase they just make up things week before the expansion and actually have no plan. that way the NDA is really a way to hide "hey, we need help. we have no idea what the **** to do. best we did was come up with the ESS, and people hate it." |

CCP have a history of not delivering on things they announced.
Better not to announce things and just deliver what's ready rather than create expectations that are not met. |

Any time CCP announces (or even hints) about upcoming changes, the mighty meta theory-crafting machine lumbers into action.
Markets are disrupted, forums are flooded and TMC spews more crap than usual. And that's six months before anything actually changes in game. On top of that if the changes don't end up being exactly what the forum experts interpreted general statements by CCP into specific, set in stone, mechanics happens, all hell breaks loose.
As entertaining as that is to watch, I'm still more inclined to see CCP keep upcoming changes under their hat. It's just more fair for everyone playing and not just the big alliances full of no-lifers.

Saw a youtube vid of a presentation about walking in stations. There was a glitch as soon as it started and 300 neckbeards started hooting, being autismal. Maybe alcohol, maybe just that crowd, maybe CCP should treat you worse and charge you double.

I'm kinda tempted to think it's because they plan to screw us over.. again...
Any time CCP has been super secretive about release content, it's been because they know if they tell us we'll all go mad. I naturally assume any non-discript updates will buff new players at the expense of everyone who actually cares about the game :)

Having something promised to be coming years before it is implemented only for it to be rushed in half assed and then end up being nothing anyone even wants causes MUCH MUCH butthurt and rage.
CCP would rather people rage about not knowing what is coming than over what was promised and not delivered. |
