MMORPG subscriptions
I can tell u why eve isn't massivily booming... cus nobody has even HEARD of it.. People that play EQ and SWG haven't anyway (except the odd person from the UK).
All it takes is for the message to get out that there is a GOOD MMORP.Elite.Game outthere.
Get some adds going.

i doubt SOE would lie, and EVERYONE all over the internet knows that EQ has around 500k subscribers, so why tell the truth about one and lie about the others...
I've been following this site for a while and watched it get updated, not that-that means much.
I put the link there for people to look at as i thought it was interesting... Not to argue about if its real or not.... look through the internet, all the numbers i found cooresponded with the graph... but it seems u decided to flame before you decided to investigate (by seeing u posted a minute or so after i posted).
EDIT:- bah.. edited your post after u looked it up lol

SOE lies all the time. However, that amount of EQ subs seems to be about right.

Apparently, the graph is misleading.
"AC has been one of the most difficult games to get good subscription numbers for. Unfortunately, Turbine and/or Microsoft seem reluctant to give out their figures, perhaps because they were not the big success like UO, EQ, and DAoC. Still, IÆve managed to get a few data points when I consider reliable, and removed a few that I have since determined to be erroneous. AC saw a substantial bump in subscriptions with the release of their first expansion pack, AC: Dark Majesty, but since then the numbers have dropped back down to about 80,000."
I think around 40k is what most people have been assuming that Eve has, given the distribution of the players online in the server stats. Actually, maybe a tad lower than that...around 30k, perhaps. But not everyone plays for 4 hours straight. ------------------------------------------- "My main griveance with the Caldari state was that once I had finished my work for them, they wanted me dead."

"And this sirbruce is a quality source of statistics... why?"
Because he has been involved with internet multiplayer gaming since Pong was networked between 2 Atari's.
He has many friends, and knows many people who will give him accurate, anonymous information.
He knows how the business works, and how to read between the lines about what is really happening, marketing bs aside. That's why.

I bought it and i think its great. Have you played it? or have u just listened to the people that have never played a MMORPG, and expected to go and kill Darth Vader on there first day?
I can't wait for the spacecombat Add-on ... if its anything as good as the single player TieFighter/X-Wing games that LA made, then it will make the game double as good as it is now.

why out of 40K people are not like 25K on at the same time simple.
1. some people are on vacations at anytime while others are at school/work. This mean at anytime 1/3 - 1/6 of the players aren't even able to get on.
2. most people who play MMOs don't play more then 2 - 4 hours a day, and usualy don't play every day in a week, this means each indavidual ususaly stick between 12 - 24 hours a week.
3. Time zones and different schedules make people get on at a wide range of times. which at 2 - 4 hours daily thats like 1/12 - 1/6 at anytime.
Stack those fractions you'll see it cus that 40K to bits. InfiniCorp, Lunatic at Arms

screw all those MMO's i said that if it was going to be any MMO it would be EVE or nothing... i wasnt going to go to some old **** were ppl have done it all and i never liked anything thats why i never went to any MMO, I remember all my other friends playing them... but i didnt i played duke nukem 3d and other games like that
i still like FPS games a lot, but i looked at planetside i thought about it for 15min then said nahhh, as i read other ppl talking in the forums i saw that many said it was good and stuff but really has no point, and then i just judged it for my self based on what the game was and said it sucks...
most FPS games have a lot more things going for them more so then that game so it would be stupid to get that game for me, as other things matter then just frags and going to other side, i want to have the best team in FPS games i want to have tournaments matchs etc... that game just makes no sense at all even WWII type games are better for something that never ends in combat... but not that game
just my own opinion and observation + the comments i read from both sides pro and con... support Idea: QuickInfo an alternative to ShowInfo

"not booming"
It points pretty upward..
And, the fact that all commercials comes from reviews I think its pretty good
I think CCP hold on the commercials until we are finished beta testing it ;) * -"You know, we play the "good guys" right? We kill pirates, griefers, retards and general subversive elements in the EVE-Community. To the rest, we are friendly and always prepared to help out. Peo |

I think that EVE is doing pretty well. Since it lacks the wookie-goupies that SWG has, or the opportunity of UO or Everquest (them being one of the first MMOGs).
Also there is another difference: in EVE all those players share the same cluster. So for the populationdensity, 5000 online will be the same for another MMOG with 25000 online only divided over 5 servers.
The biggest difference is ofcourse the revenue CCP will make.

What N'JOrah said and more. That "report" which is not the first iteration he has done of it, gets read by most of the leading pundits and devs out there and is widely reguarded as the only semi-reliable subs page out on the internet. Note careful his disclaimers on the data though.
The subs figure for EVE is also somewhat different in "presentation" because it is single instance without any regional servers/shards. CCP have looked at 1/10 ratio since inception despite the "given" from other multi-shards being closer to 1/4 or 1/5.
ALthough the server dynamics and costs for EVE wil be different the break-even point for the hypothetical "average" MOG was always quoted at 40-50k subs. If EVE has that I'm impressed... I would have put the figure closer to 25k atm, though as Bruce point sout his data of 40k is for July.
Who knows... one thing is for sure, we now know why S&SI haven't been pushing EVE (their imminent closure and sale) as they are no doubt running in "no expenditure" mode. Might be interesting to see who takes over their position.

Lineage is a very different type of game. One of those apples-and-oranges kind of things.
That being said... be careful about taking what SirBruce says as gospel. I remember dealing with him way back in the olden days (late 80's) in the context of MUDs. One discipline problem after another, culminating in his ejection from a major MUD for writing description-altering viruses in the scripting language of the MUD. He might have grown up and developed a conscience, or he might not.
I certainly wouldn't want him in my workplace.

And I'd be interested in seeing some real official stats as opposed to some figures some guy ran up But no-one will ever do that - marketing is all about perception, and what company is going to stand up and wave it about saying "Yeah, look at me! Mine's the 15th smallest! But everyone enjoys it *loads*! Size *doesn't matter*!"

Edited by: Dragon Emperor on 12/09/2003 17:04:50 the chart shouldn't bring any asia mmorpg in, those are completely different. and i even heard about some chinese or korean mmorpgs have close to 100m subscriptions. many asia mmorpgs have hourly based subscription system. it means you buy points for 100 hours, if you never ever finish the 100 hours and never ever play again, you are still count as active subscription.

I agree this shouldnt be taken as gospel but many of the nay sayers could have their questions answered is they read the documentation. There is a reason things like Lineage and Jumpgate aren't on that chart. If you are too lazy to read the article, that is fine but don't go bashing it because you only make a fool out of yourself.
The only stat, however, that makes a difference is the one that isn't show, profitability. If, for example, Eve can be profitable with 40K subscribers, does it matter how many more there are?
And in many cases, most of these games fractionalize their population into shards or servers. You will never see more than 3K users at a time on any DAoC server, for example. Aside from Anarchy Online (which has only 2 servers), Eve's accomplishment of having 1 Universe and all of its players in that universe is an accomplishment that is often overlooked.
So give it some time, see where Eve is a year after release and the game has matured. There is no rush, after all, if you truly enjoy the game. "Salvation Awaits" - The Preacher |

Now if sony had a brain they would make their own auction site for Everquest stuff and offer some kind of way to make it safe, that way they would make a profit on each sale.

I beta tested SWG starting in Beta 2, and I know that SWG isn't nearly the game SOE marketed, nor is it nearly the game it was during Beta 2. The loss (through sudden feature cuts taking place almost entirely in April - I still have the Holocron and Q-3PO quotes around here somewhere) of any credible economic system is a serious blow to the game being anything other than EQ in space.
