I have a better analogy. Because all the ones I see pretty much don't apply or aren't very good.
It isn't like going into someones home or taking there bike or wallet. Because when you jeteson something into space you are meaning to trow it on the side of the street or litter a park. If someone picks it up wiether you are standing there watching it or at home getting you truck to go pick it up it is fair game and not like really stealing.
using a jet-can is more like using an ATM and drawing out money, and while you take the money out say you do lots of withdraws you just dump the money on the side of the road. If it was like the game a magic container would appear to hold the stuff you are throwing away.
From what I have heard when them mean you steal from someone and (according to the development section) the police come, they mean someone used the Hack skill to steal from a secure can or someone took your stuff from a non-secure can(not to be confused with jet-cans).
Jet cans where ment to hold loot when you die ot a NPC dies. In alot of other games when you drop or jet something it is destroyed or lost. I think they should adopt that game mechanic. Because when you select that jetteson commend your aggreeing to forfiet your right of ownership from the object.

Quote: In RL there are laws that govern what is private property and what is salvage. If I put my briefcase down while I am buying a hotdog, it is still my property and anyone taking it without my permission is a thief. However, if I leave my briefcase on the street and walk away, it will become salvage after a reasonable time and someone who finds it and picks it up will not be considered a thief.
EVE laws do not follow RL laws. The way jetisoned canisters work right now they become salvage as soon as they leave your cargohold. You can get ownership of the ore again by picking it up and putting it back in your cargohold but so can anyone else.
The way things are right now might not be 'right' but taking ore out of jettisoned cans is not illegal as per current EVE laws and as such do not constitute theft.
It is not like just leaving you briefcase on the side while you bu a hotdog but more like throw it in the trash, or put down on the side and say you don't want it or that you forfiet your rights to it.

Would you please read my entire post before making comments? I clearly differentiate between actions that preserve your property rights and actions that forfeit them.
The main point is that in EVE jetisoning anything from your cargo hold into an unsecure cargo container, will forfeit your rights to it no matter what you do or say.
eek its like the words changed before my eyes. Sorry. lol
