after recently losing both my Moa and caracal, I have become greatly upset with the passing of my 2 ships. I lost a lot of money from them being destroyed, as I was carrying more expensive cargo than i should have been, and so am now skint, despite premium insurance on the Caracal, as i spent it on getting an osprey and buying skills.
im now giving mining a shot, and currently have 3 Miner IIs and an assault launcher installed, along with a medium shield booster. I only have 400,000isk left, and so after not getting very lucky having a look around the forum, i'm asking now. I don't want to get heavily involved with it, like level 5 mining barges and such, but I do want to make a few million to get back into the combat at a decent level.
- what modules should i be getting? - what skills should i get? (i have level 4 in mining, along with level 1 mining skills ina few other areas) - what sec status? - anything else.
any answers would be a great help cheers mr fish

If you want some more speed, you could easily fit a 10MN afterburner. Helps you move around.
Fit one or two mining upgrades in your low slots if you can spare the CPU. Fit one or two cap rechargers in your meds to help with shield boosting.
Train up the Astrogeology skill if you feel like it.
Carry 4 light drones in your drone bay and use them with the assault launcher to defend yourself against NPCs.
You should be able to mine in 0.5 without a problem. --- High quality pics of most EVE ships!

You won't be making a lot of money mining outside of 0.0 anyway, unless you invest ISK and skill points in barges and stuff. But I guess you could try mining omber or kernite. I have no idea if they're even worth it nowadays since I haven't mined in empire in the past two years but you can give it a try. --- High quality pics of most EVE ships!

In 0.5 you could have mined Jaspet/kernite or omber, which would sell for a reasonable, but not great amount. -----

There's no waste of ISK in EVE, unless you bought something that was overpriced. It's not like used cars in real life. If you're not happy with your Osprey, repackage it and resell it for the price you paid. Same for the mods. All you end up losing is the sales tax, which should equate to a couple hundred thousand ISK at most. --- High quality pics of most EVE ships!

Miner IIs are the best for mining no doubt about it. With decent lvl in you Caldari Cruiser, your 3 on the Osprey can be worth almost 6 on a ship without the mining bonus. As for security status, I think mining in 0.0 is safer than in 0.4- 0.1 because those systems tend to still have higher populations of players, including pirates, etc. But that assumes you can get 0.0 access through joining a 0.0 corp and that you have something to kill NPC spawns with, etc. Since you are a noob, mining in empire is your best choice imo.
That said, your choice of ore should be a consideration of where you are located. Omber is in Gallente space, Caladri have pyrox / pyerite as a general rule from what I've noticed. Remember, another general rule: lower sec = better ores are there.
Networking saves time. If you need to raise isk, having more miners and a single hauler will help you out because as a general rule, everybody will get more than if they all mined alone.
Mining is like watching paint dry. But what else can ya do? :) Eventually you'll get it back and combat will be a possibility again. Don't forget that there are still ore thieves in empire, albeit criminal flagging is a slight deterant, if they think they can get your ore and escape with it, they'll still do it.
If you have drone skills, don't discount getting some Mining Drones to help out. They are slow and don't add much, but if you've got nothing else useful (i.e. combat drones), then a little increase is better than no increase.
If you have CPU to spare, look on market at the mining laser upgrade. Requires mining IV and mining upgrades I, and the module itself is approx. 25 k isk.

Edited by: Kery Nysell on 27/03/2006 16:31:52 I've not found a single roid of Jaspet in 0.5+ since Cold War, when they added "trace amounts of Zydrine" to it ... but I may have had a string of bad luck, already mined to nothing belts ...
Kernite and Omber respawn only on Mondays and Fridays, and are usually macro-mined to death within a few hours of the "server up".
The sad thing is, Scordite is one of the best ores to mine for cash in highsec, low volume and good yield, but you need tremendous amounts of it before you can make a decent profit.

I did Vexor Mining with 4x Miner II's and only using 4x Hobgoblins in 0.5 and had no problem shield tanking the rats. If you are going to use an Osprey with 3x Miner II's and lets for argument sake had Mining 4 and Astrogeology 4 you would be looking at this rate of mining if you nonstop jetcanned mined.
60 (Base Miner II) x 1.2 (Mining 4 Bonus) x 1.2 (Astro 4 Bonus) x 1.2 (Osprey Bonus) * 3 (3x Miners) = 311.04 M3 of Ore per Minute.
If you are mining Veld which is 0.1 M3 per Ore you would get
3110.4 Veld Per Minute at ~4.5ISK 13996.8 ISK Per Minute 839808 ISK Per Hour.
This is assuming you can non stop jetcan mine with a dedicated hauler. Obviously you will make significantly more with Omber or even Scordite. Omber is definately hit or miss in 0.5 and is usually gone while Scordite is pretty easy to come across in 0.5 and will do better than Veld.
Personally even though everyone says to cruiser mine in a Osprey, I prefer a vexor since you can have the following rates with the same mining skill set. Granted this all comes down to what skills you have available to you and since Im Gallante this was an easier setup to go towards instead of the Osprey.
60 (Base Miner II) x 1.2 (Mining 4 Bonus) x 1.2 (Astro 4 Bonus) * 4 (4x Miners) = 345.6 M3 of Ore per Minute.
Regardless it will be slow going but you can definately make some money back to get back into a ship for fighting.
The one good thing about mining 0.5 is you do get the extra loot and bounty for the rats, which though not very much does add up over the long haul.

The Osprey gets a +20% yield per level of Caldari Cruiser. Yes, it's a Tier 1 cruiser, so you only need the skill at 1 to fly it, but it gets better and better the more you raise the skill ...
The Vexor is a Tier 2 cruiser, an Osprey with 2 in Caldari Cruiser would mine :
60 (base Miner II) x 1.2 (Mining 4) x 1.2 (Astrogeo 4) x 1.4 (Cal Cruiser 2) * 3 = 362.88m¦ per minute.
That's about 20m¦ more than the Vexor with equal skills.
And it gets even better with higher skills ...
