in normal flight my FPS stays steady around 60, but whenever I enter any battle it drops to around 15 tops. the overload of activity going onscreen can be a factor, but I noticed that drones and the targeting grid for locking onto targets are two of the most noticeable ones. are there any solutions to alleviate this problem? thanks for any suggestions =)

I am afraid that you CPU is the limiting factor there. I have a mobile 3Ghz AMD processor and when its running in low power mode (equiv to a 1.4Ghz CPU) I get major slowdowns when there are a few people around or alot of ingame items.
Think it may be time to look at upgrading if you want to improve the performance. << Insert whitty sig here >>

Yep, the only solution would be to get a faster cpu. --------------

Try disabling Effects (CTRL-ALT-Shift-E) and Turret Effects (CTRL-ALT-Shift-T) in battles.

I have a Dell inspiron 5160 laptop with Mobile P4 3.20GHz, 512mb RAM and GeForceFX Go5200 64mb card - I have tried the adding the stuff mentioned in prefs.ini in the sticky to improve my fps, but it is consistently at a horrible 5.0 and in battles its just unplayable. Any reasons why this might happen?
Also what does mem delta and total mem delta in the monitor refer to .. that is consistently in the red...
Thanks

The Geforce FX Go 5200 is a lousy 3D Graphics Chip. 64MB video memory is the minimum requirement to run EVE. Use 15bit and 16 bit colors and depth, play in 1024x768 fullscreen and you might get half decent FPS, but I doubt it.

Edited by: Athlonman on 30/03/2006 19:39:34 Well, the other day I flew through Penirgman and my FPS dropped to 15-20. I'm running a A64 x2 3800+, 1G PC3200 (now 2G), and an x800 PRO on XP Pro SP2. before the blood patch or was it before RMR I used to get solid 60-70 FPS ANYWHERE...I've also been experiencing the annoying 1-2 second UI freeze and it's been as bad as 10-20 second freezing.
I threw together a 9700 PRO box (Athlon T-Bird 1.2Ghz, 512MB, MCE 2k5) and out of station I'm lucky to see 35 FPS so I'm suspecting this box is CPU limited but I'm highely doubting it...and yup both boxes are using the mods in prefs.ini..
In both cases, changing game resolution and/or color depth does NOT increase FPS. Sounds to me like a client bug...haven't tried my A64 3200+ laptop with the Radeon 9600 mobility 64M since RMR so maybe I'll do that tonight..

If you are often in battles and your graphics/cpu aren't up to your optimal experience. I would suggest using the CTRL+SHIFT+ALT + "T" then "E" key.
It just turns off all the spiffeh turret effects and a lot of visual add ons. May not be as pretty without all the effects, but it will be more playable until you can boost your system stats up.

caer,
Not sure if you're refering to me or not, but when does an Athlon 64 X2 3800+ (Dual core 2ghz), 2G ram, and x800 PRO not up to snuff to play EVE? I play DOOM 3 @ 1600x1200 on High Quality and don't even notice slowdown.
Since RMR/Blood, EVE client seems to have become a PIG. 15-20 FPS in Penirgman (just flying though, no battles) is just UNEXCEPTABLE on this setup! It could be a SUN issue because I've noticed if I look away from the sun, FPS increases to maybe 30...not all systems in EVE do this however so it sounds more client realated then hardware...

Isn't there a fix or something you have to do to get Eve running faster on a 64 bit OS? I thought I read something about that in one of these threads.

EVE isn't designed to run full speed on dual core systems, it only uses one in reality, instead of the two. Hence your 3800+, has become a single 1900 core for EVE.
All you can do is wait and see if CCP release a dual core version of EVE, because everyone I know with dual core systems has problems, except with the FX-60 (which I have).

1900+??? What are you smokin??? 3800+ is dual Core 2ghz so that would make it running as a single core a 3200+ As of the last patch, EVE is DUAL CORE capable... I've tried setting CPU infinity to just Core 0, but that hasen't really done anything noticeable either...

Edited by: BBQ on 31/03/2006 20:51:53 There is a bug in ATi drivers / Eve
If you have an ATi card and enable Catalyst AI, the frame rate takes a massive nose dive when there is more than 2 or 3 objects on screen.
Might be worth trying with that turned off to see if it makes a difference, it did on mine (15fps with it on & looking at a station upto 60fps with it off and looking at same station from same range)
BTW eve is not dual core capable, its dual core compatable. Eve is still a single threaded program and as such only uses one core, windows however will shift which core its running on at any one moment. << Insert whitty sig here >>

For dual core users have you attempted to set the affinity on evefile.exe to just use one core?
Also, ensure you have installed the following patch from Microsoft which addresses performance issues with dual core CPU's. Linky ------------------------------------------- Hard work MAY pay off later, but procrastination always pays off now! |

That's because it only runs on ONE CORE. Havn't you understand anything I said? EVE doesn't USE the second core.
