flying around sisi with a few of the new ship models. They're really cool and look great on the preview screen. Taking a few out for a fly they really seem dark. Particularly the gallente models.
I'm wondering if there's an easy light shader to change on the models, not sure if this would be difficult. In the long run, I could see that things would be too dark, and the nebulae might be too over powering in contrast with the ships at a distance (would all seem like black figures).
just on thought, you could change the map lighting. but then the possible problem with this is the old stargate and station models that might appear way too bright compared to the darker ships.
With this on mind, I'm wondering how dark you could go with the minmatar models before they look like indescribable shadow figures in the distance. target the reavers, anyone? |

Yeah I started a thread like this the other day and basically everyone told me to F off and they liked that they couldn't see their ships.
:shrug
I think Caldari is even worse than Gallente and I imagine Minmatar will be impossible to see even in the bright systems since it will be based on the Loki skin which is a rather flat brown.
I'll probably end up sticking with flying Amarr since even with the reskin I think they will still be the most visible. |

Yes CCP, I fully agree with this.
The bad lighting from the new nebulae and the darker textures that were introduced certaintly create problems. Please address this, otherwise players will have difficulty seeing their ships.
I think that when playing a game, it's taken for granted that you will be able to actually see your representation. |

I'm really liking the new darker models - the shadows make a lot more sense, and the ships are still 'bright' towards the solar system's star, which is what's to be expected from a game based in space. Keep up the good work, CCP! |

Whenever they arrive, I hope the V3 textures on the Huginn and Sleipnir work better in Min space than the current models. Sadly these excellent ships currently look crap.

I decided to wait for the sisi test to see everything and to post back. I had the chance to check every ship out, and see new systems with other new backgrounds. I still firmly stand with my OP..

Keep up the good work, CCP! They did an excellent job and rotating the camera to the nebulae pointed to you can see different light reflect on your hull. Still too dark however. They look ok from point blank camera shots, but with this pivoting your camera to an ship in the distance you would see an obscure figure. If you were to remove the overview, you couldn't easily recognize what ship that is..
My concern, the new spaceship models are very dark to work with the new lighting/shadows and nebulae. brighten up the ships or lighting. The game isn't going to look bright and vivid as the butterfly video is. without OV, against the new nebula you might make out the figure, but without zooming in you would see just a dark black -something- of a ship. I for myself can't see a ship model skin from afar. (besides the current v2 amarr, they can be identified easier still. on sisi)
The amarr v3 ships will probably end up being dark like the mauler. overall, I just want to be able to easily see a ship. hulls need to be brighter, but keeping the new nebulae as bright as it is.

Obscure figures instead of ships is not something we want. Honestly, EVE can be so much more beautiful with a bit more care. |

i'm in support of the OP's opinion; in the hangar the ships look pretty perfect, but after undocking they look too dark;
i don't think that brightening up the ships will have a negative effect on the overall 'dark mood' it's just starting to be a strain on the eyes if stuff is too dark all the tme; |

Support. They're just too dark. Especially for prolonged periods.
I'm a big aesthetics nut. The ships on on Sisi do not look better than TQ currently. Partly the level of lighting, partly the colouring. They don't look scruffy on TQ.

Space is supposed to be dark, not bright, outside of Nebula!
Inside of Nebula, its bright and you can see the ship in much more detail
Its almost perfect the way it is on the test server. Stop trying to brighten up dark space...it doesnt feel like space anymore.
Edit: Disregard this post, I thought you guys were talkin about space, not ships. |

Ambient light does not exist. What you want them to do is to turn the brightness of the ships up.
Refering to it as ambient lightning and asking for an increase would also make stations brighter, gates, roids and everything else that's within 3d space.
That said ... At least give those who haven't seen it yet a chance to see it.
Also ... Maybe your screen is too dark. :p |

ofc there is map ambient light, lol. I already said all I had in regards to that. It would be best probably if CCP increase the brightness so even the new caldari models look brighter too.
If you haven't been on sisi , I insist you go flying and see for yourself how dark ships are.-á
these new shadows and directional lighting may work better if CCP brightens the hulls to the point whereas you can recognize ships without the UI.
Thanks for the support so far with this thread. I hope a dev understands what I mean, cause it's all too dark outside station. |

I was referring to the fact that ambient light does not exist ... in real life. I guess it doesn't matter, though.
I've seen screenshots in the other thread ... yeah, ships look dark when they don't get lighted by the sun. Woah ... who would have thought of that. *lol*
Anyway ... yeah ... ships seem to look too dark occasionally, but as i and others like this, how about a slider that enabes us to adjust brightness ... "ambient color" is a single value only anyway and can be handed to the shader easily.
And Frio ... that was a really, REALLY dumb trolling attempt. :) |

Anyways, the ship side that is turned towards the sun is perfectly bright, the other half is shadowed like it should be.
I dont see a problem at all |

lol @ the "space is dark" comments. It is true in space the shadow side of objects are dark hard shadows. But the sunlit sides will be very bright. There is no atmosphere to lessen the sun's brightness. So if you want realism you'd need a stark bright sun-lit side against a hard dark shadow. You'd also have to get rid of all the nebulae as well as the stars. So cut it out with this "its realistic" nonsense. |
