I personally find the UI in EvE to be bulky, and somewhat 'unfinished.' Truth be told, it reminds me of a set of programmer tools, in the sense that if you know what your doing, you can do EVERYTHING. But if you don't know the program, your screwed.
Do not take that as insulting the UI, however. It's perfectly functional, in every way that it needs to be functional. The op's post, while I don't agree with everything he said, has some interesting points to me.
- Customizable UI 'mods.' This wouldn't be simple to do, but would address the difference between old-school and the 'WoW' catagory. Add some mods that change the way the UI appears on a players screen, including offering that round look, some maybe racially-oriented. Fluff? Maybe. But different players have different priorities.
- Tabbed, drop-down and dockable windows. There's a lot of information on my screen that I need, and a lot I don't. A suggestion would be to use the current overview, but give it control options. An example would be to be able to 'pin' it in place, like channels, or move it around. Also, allow me to dock it with one of the sides, so that it can slide off my screen when I don't need it. Finally, tabbed windows for the overview are coming out in Kali. Not my choice on options, but it's a start.
- Hover. Allow players more information when the hover over an object in space. Not right click, hover. Stuff like transversal velocity, tags, etc.
- Hidden. Give us the ability to move the NeoCrom off the screen completely (little tab at the top).
- Options. I, personally, don't need an image when I lock my target. I'd rather their damage totals show up in the overview, really. I don't need the hud to be so large in the middle. I don't need three chat channels, when I could watch all the chat in ONE window.
- Redundancy. Take a hint from SOE and the Star Wars Galaxies players. If you ever add ANYTHING to the UI in the game, KEEP THE OLD WAY TOO! It's great to ADD options, but it's always a horrible idea to take things away.
I doubt I'll be around to see the UI go through a massive change, but that's life. If it does, let's cross our fingers that they take some help from the past ...
